Freedom 5 will be Monday, the 14th. Busiest weekend of my life. Have a

craft show on Saturday and Cleveland Browns opening day game on Sunday.

But wanted to schedule between games, so I have a couple weeks to

recover. They phoned today to ask what color processor I wanted.

Choices are black, charcoal grey, white, and sand. What kind of choices

are those? Where is purple? Where is silver? Then you could get a side

panel with soccer balls. How about FOOTBALLS. Oh, they don't play that

in Oz. Sigh. However, the standard package is 2 processors, and you get

a choice of 2 of the Freedom 5s or one Freedom 5 and one regular Freedom.

I'm going for broke and getting the 2 new ones. The rechargeable

battery option hasn't been FDA approved yet, but I've always used

disposable batteries.

They no longer shave half your head, which is good since I just had

highlights put in last week. You can wash your hair the next day, just

put antibiotic cream on before and after. Driving the next day is OK.

Way different from when I got the N24 13 years ago. I will be staying

overnight (23 hours) since the Dr. doesn't want me coming home alone.

Have a ride to the surgery center, now have to see who is willing to

drive across town to pick me up the next day.

So wish me luck, and I'll let people know how it goes.

Good luck, .

We DO play football (soccer), the round ball game, in Oz.

I think Australia are about #14 in the World now.

Not bad considering our players are never at home :-).

I'll be thinking about you tomorrow, (today here).

Thanks Snoopy,

My dog takes care of me all the time. Helps wash the dishes, does the

pre wash with her tongue, takes me out for walks, defends me from beasts

and foes - like squirrels, possums, raccoons and the occassional skunk.

That's something to be avoided.

I got home from the Browns game tonight and thought, " You know, I

didn't ask which of the Cleveland Clinic hospitals I'm supposed to go to

for surgery tomorrow " Called the AV therapist, who said he's pretty sure

the surgeon is at Beachcliff on Monday. Clinic Surgery scheduling does

not have me on the schedule for ANY location AV therapist also gave me

the number of the ENT resident who will be assisting. I called her and

found out I need to report for pre admission testing and once that is

over they'll send me up to surgery. And what location it will be at. I

commented that it was such a blonde thing to do to leave knowing you'll

be operated on, and have no clue when or where. She said she could

understand that, because she's a blonde too, and so is the surgeon.

Should be fun with 3 blondes trying to get something accomplished.

Surgery takes 2 hours max, so I won't be out long .

Good Luck, . Hide your blonde hair, and see if you can find a

participating surgeon who's a brunette. :}

Hi Everyone,

I have been researching Dr Aceves now for 3 yrs. I have been on this board for that long-on and off, and it seems I am finally scheduled for the SLEEVE.

Just 7 weeks ago I lost my husband with cancer (28 yrs of marriage) and now its my turn for good health. My date is August 6th. I cannot believe the excitement. Two yrs ago I was scheduled for the surgery and my husband got sick. I miss him so much but am so excited for the new life I will have. I am already wondering and thinking about men. wow

Everyone is wonderful on here and I gotta say I love the help from Bipley and Suzanne and the others who give of there time to help us just getting on that path of surgery. Thank you to all of you who write in and give advice.

Love to youall,

So sorry to hear about the tough times you have been experiencing but very happy that you have scheduled the surgery.  I'm sure you already know, but you'll never regret it . . . ok, maybe a little the first month when you're on liquids.  Please keep us informed on your progress.

Take care,

Joyce

Dr.A had talked to us about the veptr for aubrey. He said he would probably wait until shes 6 to really start talking about doing the surgery. She turns two next friday. SO i was just wondering how the surgery has gone for you guys and if you had to go back would you have kept casting or was surgery the only other option you had?

Met 's new surgeon and we have a surgery date! June 6 @ 7:30am.

This works because it is the Monday after her recital and while it may be the last day of school (because of snow days) oh well. You grab dates when you can.

It will be a lengthening! I keep expecting a replacement (which I am told will now be a VEPTR 2) but nope, he will lengthen her 1 more time, but it will only be one rod getting lengthened - the other won't because 1) it can't be, she is at the end and 2) it really doesn't need to be.

Hmm, interesting. I am sure I will have a bunch of questions before now and then!!

Hi Chelsea,

has congenital scoliosis, so Mehta's casting was not an option for her. She had her first surgery, the implantation of the VEPTR in 2005 when she was 3. She will be coming up on her 6th surgery and has done very well with the instrumentation and the surgeries. She is amazing!!

I will be happy to answer any questions that I can about the VEPTR surgery I can for you.

Can you tell me what surgery has been like for your daughter? My daughter,

Audrey, is three and is not getting any correction in the five casts she has

had, so we know surgery is down the road for us. Anything you want to share is

appreciated.

Thanks,

Did have to have the surgery at 3..was that the only option for her? Im just trying to figure out why our doctor wants to wait until aubrey is around 6 or 7 years old to do surgery. The casting for us is working. However, he does not think in the end results that she will hold and will need surgery. I guess the casting is just buying us time. I know all surgerys are painful. But was it easy to manage erins pain during the healing process..was she able to do regular activity after the surgery. Sorry im so full of questions!!

Chelsea,

More than one orthopedist has told us to put off surgery as long as possible

because there may be many complications, such as infections and rods breaking.

One thing that is being considered regarding surgery is to avoid stunting the growth of the child. As much as possible surgery is put off until the child has reach his/her growth maturity which usually happens during puberty. For girls starting of menstrual flow is a sign that growth will soon stop or the girl has reach her maximum height because the hormones that initiates menstrual flow closes the growth plate of the long bones which is called epiphyseal plate. What I further gathered from the different doctors that have seen my daughter is that the spine growth stops earlier than the long bones. That is why for Eiddelyn they are planning to

have the surgery by age 9 or 10 y.o. basicallly as far as I know surgery is put off until the child has reach the growth potential so that the growth will not be affected by the fusion of the spine.EthelynFrom: audreymdawson <audreymdawson@...>Subject: Re: Surgery Dateinfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Thursday, February 24, 2011, 6:34 AM

Chelsea,

More than one orthopedist has told us to put off surgery as long as possible because there may be many complications, such as infections and rods breaking.

Yes, surgery was the only option for . As I mentioned, has congenital scoliosis which, in case you don't know, means there is a malformation of her her bones. In her case whe had fused ribs and has 2 hemi-vertabrae. Casting and/or bracing is not going to "cure" a congenital case - it may buy you some time depending on the severity of the curve, what bones are involved, where the curve is, what else may be going on "in there" etc. had a brace for about a year that wasn't really there for her back, it was mainly there for her torticollis which was pretty severe.

and surgery: she is a trooper! She WILL NOT take any prescription or over the counter pain meds after surgery. You name it, we have tried to give it to her. She does fine with the IV morphine and any other IV meds, but will not take anything orally. I have, in moments of desperation, gone the suppository route. However, she generally gets by with a pillow that she holds against her back. I have even sewn Velcroed straps on her various pillows so she could wear them, like a backpack, when out and about. Mind over matter? Perhaps. But she swears it works for her. Who am I to argue? It isn't my back.

can do just about anything a child her age can do. She is 9 now and when she is out on the playground with her friends, you notice very little difference. There are some things she cannot do, but that has to do with the fact that she only possesses one kidney. For example: she cannot play contact sports - football, hockey etc. She has also been told that gymnastics would not be good for her because her spine bends one way - to the right - and her head tilts the other way - to the left (due to her torticolis) - so there would be too much trying to compensate for both and she could could really hurt herself. She takes ballet and jazz lessons (this is her 5th year) and there are some moves that are a bit uncomfortable, but she does the best she can. She has gone horseback riding, camping, ziplining (where you are strapped in a harness and go flying above the ground on a cable), amusement park rides (although we avoid major roller coasters - I

don't go on them any way, so no big deal for me) hiking, creeking etc.

She is a great student, an excellent reader, has lots of friends and will stand up for herself if need be. Her neck is short due to a condition known as Klippel Feil Syndrome. She gets asked about it frequently and finally she got annoyed with some of the kids because they were being mean. She came home and asked me to make her a t-shirt that says "Kids with penguin necks are too cool for school" as she has decided that her neck is similar to a penguin's - and in a way it is. The kids haven't bugged her anymore.

what can I say? I am so proud of her! She handles this with style and sass (and yes, the sass does get her in trouble sometimes. )

Does this help?

It really depends on: the child, the type of scoliosis the child has, what type of SURGERY you are doing and a whole host of other concerns.

Any time the word "fusion" is mentioned I'm with everyone else: wait as long as possible! As soon as something is fused, that's it. It can't grow any more. You have stunted any growth potential that section of bone may have had.

If you are talking about VEPTRs one of the features is that they expand as your child grows. 's were implanted in 2005. It is 2011 and she is now just under 4' 4" tall. Pretty typical for a 9 year old 3rd grader if I compare her to her classmates. She is taller than some, shorter than some. If she hadn't had the VEPTRs I can't even imagine where she would be now. (Her brother is 12 and he is 5' 5" tall, so I think she is right on track)

Of course there are other instruments that are used and they all have pros and cons - just as the VEPTR and fusion do. You have to talk with your dr to find out the best course of action for your child. No two children are going to have the same exact plan for managing their scoliosis.

Yes, this does answer some questions. Aubrey has idopathic(sp) scoliosis. She started out with a 71* curve very high up on her spine. In cast right now she is down to 14*. Aubrey goes back on March 7th to get her cast removed and goes on march 9th to get her 6th cast put on. Its been a long journey so far for us with all the casting and not being able to actually "hold" her. So the days she has off from casting i hug on her as much as possible. Dr.A wants to do the vepter surgery he said around age 6. He thinks that will "correct" the curve she has going on. I know shes a tough little cookie..however im not sure im so tough to see her go through all that. I pray that casting will cure her, but in the back of my mind i know it will not. Its not to have people on here that are going through surgery so i can have them to ask questions to. Our families arent very supportive of the surgery and think we are picking the wrong route..but i have my full trust in our doctor. He has been nothing but nice and answered all our questions truthfully. I know there are doctors that dont tell you the so called truth about situations..but dr.A does. I'm glad is doing good with her surgerys, and i have yet to experience what it feels like to have my kids made fun of at school as our oldest is only 3. however when i go to the store there are people that stare at us like i beat my children because of aubreys cast, or ask me if shes wearing a life jacket! I'm also happy to hear that she can do just about anything! Do you know how many years ahead you have of surgerys to do? Thank you so much for all your information!Chelsea mom to aubrey!

Gail,

Thanks for posting so much info. I am glad surgeries have gone smoothly for

- she sounds feisty. How interesting that your daughter only has one

kidney. My daughter only has one functioning kidney. She has a rare chromosome

disorder, 16q22 deletion syndrome, and was born with a heart defect (since

repaired) as well. Her geneticist says that it's common with genetic defects

for spinal, kidney, and heart problems to be present.

Keep us updated,
