Guest guest
The is one significant advantage of an epidural during surgery - if you are able to tolerate the morphine. Surgeons used to use just the general anesthetic, reasoning that if a patient was not consciously experiencing the pain of surgery that all was well. Research found that the body and brain do register the pain/trauma of surgery, even when we are unconscious. It turns out, when we experience pain, neural pathways, or connections, are formed that predispose us to continue to experience the pain following injury or surgery, whatever. So, using a local anesthetic during procedures prevents the initial formation (during surgery)of neural pathways for pain signals in the brain - reducing the severity of post operative pain. Guest guest
Hey Lavanda, Did your friend that we wrote to make the choice to do the sleeve? You will LOVE being a guest this time and not a patient. Let us know how things are going with her. Hugs, Suzanne In a message dated 9/11/2009 11:44:10 A.M. Guest guest
This procedure was explained to my by the anesthesiologist much differently than the below. He told me that when they give you such heavy narcotics, it makes the patient too drowsy to get up and move after surgery; therefore, they do a morphine spinal. All this other explanation I'm not so sure about. Guest guest
Yes Suzanne she did decide to go and have the surgery. I am not able to go with her, but she is taking her Mother with her. I really wish I could go, but I have to work. I will keep you posted on how she does. Thank you for all your help. I had a spinal when I had ankle surgery a few years ago, and it worked perfectly and I had no complications. If it were me, I would trust the anesthesiologist's opinion on this one, and I'm not one to do that generally, but I feel that their personal experience is valuable. Guest guest
Yep - that's my understanding too - general (and thank goodness, as I don't really CARE to be awake while my insides are prodded/stapled/removed) + epidural.
