Take a deep breath. You are NOT going to

die. Quite the opposite. You are going so you can LIVE. I don’t think

anyone has died there from wls. Your fear is healthy and normal. It shows that

you did not make this decision lightly and that you want to live. You will be

in such loving and caring hands that you will think you have gone to a fancy

spa for a few days. Going alone means that you don’t have to worry about

anyone else but yourself. There is no real way to comfort you except to promise

that once you are there your fears will all go away. You will meet new people

and make new lifelong friends. If you want to you can call most of us whenever

you want, including right now. We are all here for each other.

It is my understanding that no one has died under Dr. Aceve's care and he has never even had a leak in a sleeve patient, which is a fabulous track record. They will take excellent care of you. I am a nurse and had a band placed August 19th.

I think it is so hard to give up control and place your very life in the hands of other people, so I understand. You have chosen an excellent group of doctors.

Dear Knitter, I just got home from Mexicali Sunday afternoon. I went by myself too, but you know what? I was never alone! When I got to San Diego Ernesto was waiting for me at the baggage claim, just as they said he would be and I instantly recognized him from his pictures, he was very nice. Then I was joined in the van by two other ladies and a boyfriend. We had a great conversation on the way to Mexicali, it's about a 2 hour drive but it goes by fast when you are having fun talking. We talked about our personal choices for the surgery and why we made those choices. When we got to the hospital, which was a beautiful very high class place, we were met by Dr Aceves assistant , and she led us through the post-op testing, explaining and reassuring all the way. I really was never alone, there is always someone around and they bend over backwards

to meet your every need, care, and concern. The next morning when I was waiting my turn for surgery, I was alone for a little while in my room, and I was glad. Because I wanted to have time to pray before going in, and I felt very calm and peaceful when I prayed, I knew I was going to be fine and that I was being watched over. That's just my subjective reaction, but I put it in because I think it helps to reach out to your higher power at a time like that for reassurance. The surgery was over so quickly it seemed like I just blinked and I was waking up and it was over. Then they hovered over me making sure I was comfortable and ok. After that it just got better and better. I believe I received better care and attention than I ever have here in the US, and I have nothing to gain by saying that. It's been 4 days since the surgery and I am feeling great! The only pain is when I take too big a gulp of liquid, (take sips not gulps!) then it is pretty

uncomfortable while it works it's way thru my new stomach. And Dr Aceves said that is normal and will get better in a few days when the swelling in the stomach goes down. So be your own hero, and march forward into battle even though you are afraid, which is only natural, there would probably be something wrong if you weren't at least a little afraid! And no one died while I was there, and I have never heard any rumors that anyone has. You will love the doctor and his staff, and the whole experience, I promise!

Warm Regards, Laurie R

thank you, all of you for the encouraging messages. I am flying out of

anchorage on the 18th because there were no other flights that worked.

I am staying overnight at a hotel and on the nineteenth I am meeting

Ernesto and going to Mexicali. I am flying home on the 22nd. I have a

few hours to wait for my flight on that day.

-Dear a,

When I went in August 2008 Iwas lucky because my husband went with me

but both of the other girls travelled alone and everything went

great. You are going to be ok you'll see. Everthing is so organize

once you get there you will see. Ernie the driver guy is so easy to

find at the airport, there will be more than one of you in the van,

and you will probably not be the only one by yourself. So the two of

you who are solo will hang out. Bring your swim suit the hotel has 2

ninice pools, you are going to be so busy you won't have time to

worry. The hospital is beautiful the people are beautiful and the

hotel is awesome. You are on such a wonderful adventure, enjoy the

journey. It is so cool. Remember too that you make a choice everyday

when you wake up about how you feel that day. So make the choice to

be happy and let go of worries. Choose happiness. You will be taken

care of.

My email address is itsleslie13@... you can directly contact me

anytime.

Take care,

It is fine..I went alone too.. I just took that time to rest up, no kids, noone to answer too..enjoyed my days just relaxing in bed. They are so sweet and anyone there getting surgery is great also. I met a few people on the van ride and we had dinner together the night before surgery and all takled over our days there. Please take a deep breath and relax..You will be well taken care of.
