Guest guest
Pepcid and Prilosec are not PPI's, Nexium and Protonix are. Nexium works slightly more effectively according to the literature out on GERD. Most insurance companies have you move from Pepcid/Prilosec to Prevacid...if you fail on Prevacid then you can get a prior authorization that your family doctor must submit and you will likely be approved. From: Cyrena Weeks <cyrenaweeks@...>Subject: PPI's Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 5:04 PM Hey Bip,So I have an acid question for you after reading your response to Jim. I have been having some acid burning again. I can take a generic pepcid and it is gone with in 1/2 hr. When I took Prilosec, I got a terrible diarrhea, so I have stuck to the pepcid. I know those two medicines work on different acid pumps in the stomach - one on the big pumps, one on the steady flow pumps (that was for other people reading this - not for your benefit) LOL Soooo, is the pepcid adequate so that I don't have long term problems with the band or should I try Prilosec again???Thanks for your time! Guest guest
Hi Cyrena:Prilosec isn't the only PPI out there. Some drugs work for some but not for others. For example, I can't take Protonix because it gives me horrible headaches daily. Nexium doesn't do a thing for me, yet Prilosec works with no side effects. Pepcid isn't going to do any damage repair. IOW, if you have any burning from acid Pepcid isn't going to permit healing the way a PPI would. But, OTOH, if it works for you, it works. As long as it isn't Calcium Carbonate (TUMS, Rolaids, etc) then that's what matters. Guest guest
Thanks for the response and correction, it's been a few years since I had that explained to me from a pharmacist to my poor husband who has terrible acid problems - he takes pepcid AND Acifex Ok, so back to me - Since the pepcid is working on the burn in my throat, is that adequate or do I need a PPI. Thanks again for your time Cyrena Re: PPI's Pepcid and Prilosec are not PPI's, Nexium and Protonix are. Nexium works slightly more effectively according to the literature out on GERD. Guest guest
Hey Cyrena, There are 5 know PPI on the market. (Prilosec, Protonix, Nexium, Aciphex, Prevacid). They all have other names they go by as well. And yes they are a different class of drug than H2 receptor antagonists. (pepcid, zantac) I would say email DR. A, but in the mean time---it certainly can not hurt to keep using the Pepcid (H2). Protonix is generally the cheaper PPI. Good luck, 14 days from tomorrow. Is it EVER going to be OCT 1st? I plan on writing you back soon. Hope you are great! jen Hey Bip,So I have an acid question for you after reading your response to Jim. I have been having some acid burning again. Guest guest
Cyrena...I don't know and the reason I don't know if that I don't know if you have damage that needs a PPI to heal. I would email Gaby and ask her to ask Dr. A what he thinks. If you are having daily acid that would lead me to believe you might need something a little more than Pepcid. What do you think? Guest guest
Bipley - I saw our response about about tums. I have been recently using them after eating (banded 12/06). I'm pretty sure my discomfort is gas related because I have actually produced a bubble the size of my fist on more than one occasion - sorry for the graphic description. So now I have been taking Zantac 150 every morning and really concentrating on eating habits, teeny bites, chew, chew, chew, no drinks within 20 minutes, etc. It seems to help alot. My question is - is the Zantac safe? What damage could the Tums have caused? I had a fill last August and I think I am slightly tight. I am currently applying for a passport to go back. You had mentioned something about band tightness - can you expand? Thanks so much for your time. > > Hey Bip, > So I have an acid question for you after reading your response to Jim. Guest guest
Here is a good article about Calcium Carbonate, the active ingredient in TUMS and Rolaids:http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=18156 Really, the best type of drug is a PPI, it stops the over production of stomach acid. It gives your stomach/esophagus a chance to heal. If you think you might have a problem email Gaby and she'll talk to one of the docs for you and they can prescribe what they think is best for you. There is a new study that I read recently in a couple of different places about bands and reflux. Any WLS type can cause reflux but banded folks have a GI anatomy that can cause more problems with acid. I'll try to find the study and post a link. BTW, you don't need a passport to go to Mexicali until June/09. A birth certificate and drivers license is fine.On Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 8:59 AM, njtrish526 <ajababy2@...> wrote: Bipley - I saw our response about about tums. Guest guest
Bipley- Thanks for your informative (as usual) and quick (ditto) response. I have not been on the boards for some time and when I returned and found your oft repeated advice, I FINALLY decided to do it the right way - teeny, tiny bites. Before that I wouldn't dream of eating steak but I am proud to say I had a thin slice of London Broil. Of course, the whole family is finished way before me waiting for my plate for the dishwasher!!! Although I consider myself fairly intelligent, I didn't realize how stubborn I was. Part of this was fear of purging yet again so I would eat things I THOUGHT were safe. Silly me. Should have just kept reading the boards. Finally, after 22 months I am almost at goal with the biggest loss in the past 6 months. Anyway newbies, listen to this gal. I wish I never stopped reading the messages. Things may have been a lot simpler. BTW, were you in Mexicali early-mid December 2006? And what does IOW mean? Guest guest
Trish...Congrats on the weight loss! Feels good to have pounds go away that you know will never come back. ;o)Yep, I was in Mexicali the first week of December '06, that's when I had my band placed. Then I revised to a sleeve several months ago. My band was 12/6/06, were you near the same time? IOW = In Other Words. On Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 9:34 AM, njtrish526 <ajababy2@...> wrote: Bipley- Thanks for your informative (as usual) and quick (ditto) response.
