Guest guest
I had a wonderful experience in Mexicali. Customs officer asked where I was, any other countries visited?; I went from Thunder Bay to Minneapolis, to San Diego. I told him I'd been to Mexico. He asked why; I told him personal--He wanted more, so I told him I had surgery there. He lifted his eyes but didn't ask what surgery. I also bought a BUNCH of Nexium (for my father) which he questioned, however no duty to pay, and proceeded without incident!! I also only brought a carry-on (with rollers) which was GREAT! No waiting in lines etc. The nurses are WONDERFUL, some only speak a little English, but I speak (or try) to speak Spanish, which I think they appreciated!! We practiced with each other. The doctors are AMAZING, they are available any time, and although they repeat much of the information, it is so that you "get it"! The hospital is SOOOO Clean!! The surgical nurse is , what a sweetheart! The driver is Ernesto, and loves to play jokes or tell stories to the pateints! I would only suggest to bring as other's have already suggested: Gas X, broth for the journey home (I brought cup of soup-took out the noodles!), and am currently drinking gatorade!! Also, get some gauze and tape as you will need to change your dressing during your journey home possibly. I would highly recommend this team of doctors to anyone, just remember that you are in Mexico, and there will be a bit of a language barrier; just be prepared for it, and if you try to speak Spanish, it goes along way! I went alone, and my husband was nervous, but knew I'd done my research! Yolada also called him after my surgery to tell him the hospital number and let him know I was O.K! Hope this helps! I'm so glad to be on the "losing side"!! leeza. Guest guest
Dr. Aceves sends you home with a 2 week supply of Nexium. You can also go to the Pharmacy around the corner from the hospital and get it there without a prescription, or the Dr's will give you a script to fill it there. I will go to my family doc here, and get a script so that my insurance will cover it. I was feeling weak as I hadn't had any protein for about 6 days, but just finished a peach flavored whey protein drink, and feeling much better! The difficulty is the sweets in the house that I used to inhale before, now I look at it and think, wow that would taste really great, but just isn't worth it anymore! Other's have written about the "head hunger", I think this is what they mean....I want it, my mouth waters for it, but I'm not hungry for it--so I stop myself from obsessing about it! When you go, say Hi to Dr. for me! He is the nicest person I think I've ever met! The rest of the team is great too. Rest assured, you have nothing to worry about with Dr. Aceves and his team; they make you feel very much at home. Good luck, and see you on the other side!!!....losing side! Guest guest
Nexium is covered by most insurance plans in USA with a prescription but you do have to have prior authorization for it, this usually means that you have failed on Prilosec OTC or the generic after 30-60 days and the next step up of Prevacid too. Don't be suprised when your insurace denies the script without going thru all the steps first. Since you can't wait, I would suggest you purchase it down in Mexico to be safe and take it back with you. If you didn't you can contact your primary doctor and ask if they have samples in there office that you could have. My question...for sleavsters...is it common for post surgery to have the same rate of GERD symptoms as the bandsters? Guest guest
Very True, My insurance turned down the prescription for the same reason. it's cheaper to buy it in Mexico. Guest guest
For Canadians, if you don't have extended health insurance to cover the Nexium, make sure you buy it in Mexico! here it costs about $250 for 1 3 month supply, my Dr. here in BC wrote the script for me when I got home, and I am covered 100% by my insurance from work. But its a lot cheaper than that in Mexico. Guest guest
Of course it's not illegal to have surgery in Mexico. People have been going to Mexico (that I know of) since the 70s for surgery. How could the US gov't possibly tell you where you can have surgery? If they ask at the border, tell them. They see people daily going there for this very reason. On Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 2:09 PM, Susy <susyalvarez@...> wrote: Is it illegal to get surgery in Mexico? Guest guest
Great! Thanks. I had noticed some people saying things about what they tell Customs and I was wondering if there was something that I didn't know. But I agree with you...the US govt shouldn't have a say so on where I get my surgery....especially when my US insurance will not approve my surgery here so that I can become a healthier person. Guest guest
RE Nexium costs in Mexico. I purchased a four week supply for $55 US. You just can't beat that price.
