Hi le,

Welcome to our world of WLS by Dr. Aveces. We are happy to answer your questions. This board for the most part is very supportive. I would say that you could go back to work in 7 to 10 days. You should not lift anything over 50 lbs until after 6 weeks. The hospital stay is 4 days and nights and you go home on the 5th day. The price of the surgery includes your hospital stay, all medication, all the tests and a night in a very nice hotel the night before the surgery. So I when on a Sunday, they did all my tests took me to the hotel, picked me up on Monday--day of surgery and then took me back to the Airport on Friday morning and I flew home.

You will be so very impressed at the quality of care that you will receive and how very clean they keep things. They are always cleaning 24 -7. They cleaned my room and bathroom 3 times a day when I was there.

This will be a life changing event for you. You are going to love the results. Remember the first month is the hardest month that you will ever do. Keep reading this board and you will find all kinds of good information. I just re-posted some things yesterday for the"newbies."

If you have any question at all as away. I would suggest if you feel you are going to get any kind of opposition from family or friends about going to Mexico that you don't tell them until you are back and have started to lose weight. You do not need that kind of pressure from ANYONE or have them try to bully you. You have made an excellent choice.

Hugs,

Suzanne

Hi everyone! I'm scheduled to be sleeved by dr aceves in January! I'm so excited and anxious and nervous an happy and just a TON of other feelings, haha A little background: I'm 26, female, I live in Florida and I've been overweight- scratch that, I've been fat my whole life pretty much. I'm a nurse. I dont have insurance (Not that it would matter anyway as the policy my employer has specifically excludes wls) because despite the weight I'm actually pretty healthy, no co-morbidities etc, and I cant see paying an arm and a leg each month for shitty, practically nonexistent coverage. I've actually paid less by paying for the few Drs appointments ive gone to out of pocket than I would have had I had insurance, which is a real shame and one of the many reasons the health care system in the us is so messed up, but I digress ;)I was first looking into having it done locally but while reading up on the surgery I started to come across many posts on various message boards talking about going to Mexico to have it done. Now I've heard the 20/20 exposé horror stories about traveling abroad for plastic surgery and winding up in some back alley operating room where you're lucky if they even bother to wipe the instruments off after the last procedure lol so I was a little skeptical at first. Then the more I kept reading and researching I honestly felt like I had found what I was looking for. Dr aceves and his team, by all accounts, are professional, caring, competent and seem to really have a passion for what they are doing. One of the pre-surgery info sessions I went to here in Florida, no one from the doctors team even bothered to show up, they played a few YouTube clips and asked how you'd be paying. That's it. A few of us had questions, fairly basic really, such as how long is it normally before you can resume normal activities? How long is the hospital stay? What do the follow up appts entail? Stuff like that, and no one at the session could answer them. They actually seemed to get annoyed that the questions were going past the end of the session. Wow all that knowledge and compassion and for only $24k? Sign me up! Not. So when I found dr aceves I knew this was the right decision for me. My mom, who is accompanying me, was also skeptical at first but is now very supportive of my decision. I don't know how the rest of my family would react if I told them. They are supportive of the wls (my younger sister had a rny performed last year in new york) but would be a little judge-y about the Mexico thing so I haven't told them that part, yet. So basically that's me! I just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully learn some things from y'all to help prepare for my new life in the upcoming months. Thanks for reading :)-le Sent from my iPhone

Welcome le. You will find lots of great tips and support here. Everyone is so great and more than willing to help answer any questions you may have. Some newbies as myself and others that have been at goal for years. You are making a great decision. Dr. A and his staff are amazing, the hospital is cleaner than any I have ever stayed in, and I along with a ton of others have nothing but really great things to say. I wish you all the best and please keep us posted along the way.

Best Wishes!

Actually I think the deposit can be in the form of a personal check but the day before surgery when you actually pay the remaining balance it has to be cash, credit card, or cashier's check. I don't think you can do a personal check since they would not have a way to verify the funds are there in the case that someone may write a bad check. You may want to double check with Nina on this. I had surgery 2 1/2 months ago and I did a cashier's check.

Crossing the border to go into Mexico takes no time at all, you simply drive through and they don't even check you or your passport. Coming back into the US it took about an hour sitting in traffic and all they checked for us was our passports, it was a piece of cake.

Hope this helps. Take Care!!!

Hi le,I completely understand the decision not to tell your family. I've decided not to tell mine as well. My sister and father won't understand, and I know my dad would worry himself sick. I am still trying to come up with a convincing cover story. From: "heiressly@..." <heiressly@...>" "

Hi le,

Crossing the border to go into Mexico is not a problem. They don't check

anything going to. Coming back was very routine, very easy. I'm guessing they

are quite used to Ernesto travelling back and forth to San Diego. You don't

have any worries there.

I used a Bank Draft, money orders here are for amounts less than $5000. There

was no problem carrying it on my person while travelling (except for the bit of

stress). As a Canadian, I didn't have to declare the amount because it was less

than ten thousand dollars US. Again... no problem

The only people I told about my VSG surgery was my husband, my son and daughter.

I didn't tell any other family members or colleagues. I may eventually but not

now. I did the research, I weighed the options, I made an informed decision for

myself. I am very happy with that decision.

Dr Aceves also repaired a hiatal hernia and an umbilical hernia while operating

at no extra charge. I did tell people, I had 2 hernia repairs as the excuse for

my surgery. It also explains away why I was only eating liquids then soft foods

for the first little while. I live away from my family so it is pretty easy to

excuse.

I don't have any regrets, neither will you!

Shine On!

I also recommend bank draft or cashiers check. I wired the funds from BofA to BofA and although the funds were on account for days prior to my surgery, there was confusion (on their end) and I had to deal with that during my recovery.

It was disappointing, and I regret having paid for it that way. I do not believe they accept cheques (checks). Only cashier's (draft), Credit card (advise in advance plus I think there might be a admin fee - 3%??) and wire transfers.

That was my only glitch and it all worked out in the end and the rest was such a very good experience at Almater and Dr.Aceves.

Going into and out of Mexico was not a problem. Everyone in our vehicle had passports and Ernesto does most of the talking. US border asked a few more questions on the way out.

Hi le,Crossing the border to go into Mexico is not a problem. They don't check anything going to. Coming back was very routine, very easy. I'm guessing they are quite used to Ernesto travelling back and forth to San Diego. You don't have any worries there.I used a Bank Draft, money orders here are for amounts less than $5000. There was no problem carrying it on my person while travelling (except for the bit of stress). As a Canadian, I didn't have to declare the amount because it was less than ten thousand dollars US. Again... no problemThe only people I told about my VSG surgery was my husband, my son and daughter. I didn't tell any other family members or colleagues. I may eventually but not now. I did the research, I weighed the options, I made an informed decision for myself. I am very happy with that decision. Dr Aceves also repaired a hiatal hernia and an umbilical hernia while operating at no extra charge. I did tell people, I had 2 hernia repairs as the excuse for my surgery. It also explains away why I was only eating liquids then soft foods for the first little while. I live away from my family so it is pretty easy to excuse. I don't have any regrets, neither will you!Shine On!> > >  > >Hi le,> > > >Welcome to our world of WLS by Dr. Aveces. We are happy to answer > your questions. This board for the most part is very supportive. I > would say that you could go back to work in 7 to 10 days. You should not > lift anything over 50 lbs until after 6 weeks. The hospital stay is 4 days > and nights and you go home on the 5th day. The price of the surgery > includes your hospital stay, all medication, all the tests and a night in a very > nice hotel the night before the surgery. So I when on a Sunday, they did > all my tests took me to the hotel, picked me up on Monday--day of surgery and > then took me back to the Airport on Friday morning and I flew home.> > > >You will be so very impressed at the quality of care that you will > receive and how very clean they keep things. They are always cleaning 24 > -7. They cleaned my room and bathroom 3 times a day when I was > there.> > > >This will be a life changing event for you. You are going to love the > results. Remember the first month is the hardest month that you will ever > do. I didn't tell anyone, my employer knew I was going out for surgery " female issues " . My owm mother wouldn't have known if she hadn't called my cell the eve I got out of surgery.  I was still a little dopey and she could tell right off there was something out of place.  Had to come clean cuz I can't bs my mom lol.  Most of my friends still don't know.  Alot of folks I know have gone to Mexico for various med services, but wls is still a little stigmatized.  I just don't want to hear speeches about using will power vs radical sugery.

Hey,

You made the right choice to NOT tell anyone. And this old crap about power vs radical surgery just makes my blood boil. If diet and exercise worked then EVERYONE would be thin. If you needed to have your appendix out they wouldn't think twice about a doctor doing surgery on your to take it out--this is the same thing, having the stomach we had made us sick and could kill us because of being overweight. There is NO shame in what you have done. You are giving yourself a tool to become healthy and be able to stay at a normal weight as long as you make good food choices. You have done something that is going to add many more years to your life.

Once you are home and you start to lose weight, then you can if you want start to tell people what you have done. They will see that you are alive and doing quite well. Hang in there, and just remember the 1st month is the hardest month that you will ever have to do. And it is only 30 days, you can do anything for 30 days. One last thing you old thinking brain is going to try to play some ugly tricks on you. It is used to being fed all the junk that we were eating, now you are going to have to TEACH it some new things. This is a relearning process that you will be doing in the next 3 or 4 months. Just one meal at a time and one day at a time.

Hugs,

Suzanne
