Guest guest
I am a 46 year old male 5'-7 " 202 lbs. bmi approx 32 and I would like to lose about 60-65 lbs. I have extremely high cholesterol pre-diabetes and I am considering a sleeve. I definitely do not want a lap band because of all the complications and revisions I have read about. I am really concerned of not being able to control my weight loss with the sleeve and losing too much to the point of becoming ill or anorexic. Any experience with low bmi like mine would be appreciated. thanks jose
Guest guest
Hi , Here is a real simple answer. When are losing weight you restrict your calories. When you reach your goal you know how many calories it takes to maintain that goal. Pretty simple calories in calories out equals maintaining your weight. Once you reach your goal you will not need to exercise as much. You have come to the right place. I hope you know that Dr. Aceves is the best most skilled surgeon that you could have find for this WLS. You will never have one regret when you have him do your surgery. His Staff is amazing. You will NEVER find the kind of care you will get with him, any where in the US. I would go back to him in a heartbeat for anything I needed. Once you start eating and start losing weight, you will get the hang of it. It is really easy to figure out how much food it take to maintain your weight. I have always wondered why people think they will keep losing weight. Just bump up the calories--seems so simple to me Hugs and take care, Suzanne In a message dated 4/15/2011 6:19:25 P.M. Guest guest
Mine was low --32 -- and I had no problems with the lap band surgery or aftermath....both the sleeve and band (which was the end-all be-all when I got it) are TOOLS in your weight loss journey. You hit the nail on the head. The issue IS control: with or without surgery. You're going to do just fine with the sleeve. Get it and enjoy the ride and understand YOU are still at the wheel. You will hear from lots of people who did the sleeve surgery and they will be able to advise you specifically. But generally speaking, what I have said is the truth. Best to you and keep us posted. Oh. I DO recommend Dr. A and his team. Wish I was as young as you are when I did this! Guest guest
You sound a lot like me. I am 5 foot 7 and a half, and top weight was 199.9. I had sleeve surgery with Dr. Aceves on Feb 10, 2011 on that day my bmi was 31. My current weight is 161. I am two pounds from a normal BMI weight. I also want to weigh 140 give or take. Maybe even 130. I really don't know for sure because I've never been that weight as an adult. My weight loss has been slow as far as sleeve surgery goes. Us light weights can't expect to pull larger numbers early out like others with higher bmi's. I do track my food each day and Dr. Aceves says to take in 600 to 800 calories daily. I am usually between 800 and 1000. For me it's not easy to eat 600 calories in a day and have the energy to mother two young boys, work, volunteer, workout, etc. I look mostly at protein at 70 plus and all 64 plus oz of liquids a day. I do believe that maintence will not be easy. I would like to imagine for a minute the problem of losing too much, for once in my life, but at two months out I can't imagine it being my problem. It's too easy to go over 1000 caloriesa a day for me. For me, losing weight is still work, it's just a lot easier with my sleeve. I still love food, as I did before. I want this bad and I'm willing to work it everyday. It really is no more that a tool for me and the work must be done everyday. No surprises for me. Good luck with your journey. Guest guest
I have had a less positive experience, unfortunately. I am also 5'7 " and started at 210 on January 21. In the 3 mos since, I have only lost 23 pounds (now at 187). Most of what I consume is protein drinks, maybe once a day real food, but focusing on protein. Apparently, my body adapted very quickly to the lower calories. I am very discouraged, but happy to hear that others have had more success. --Kathy > > You sound a lot like me. Guest guest
I think we all got the sleeve for restiction and to feel full sooner. The sleeve won't make you feel full on liquids and that includes shakes. Limit shakes from 0 to 2 a day and be sure they are a healthy weight loss shake. Last night I had seasoned ground turkey and squash. I was so good but could only eat 2 oz. A tall shake goes down easy and I have it every morning for breakfast. My sleeve loves all kinds of seafood and chicken too. Keep at it. Krista S
Guest guest
Thank you as a pre op sleevester this makes sense, I sure hope I can avoid the temptation of having shakes throughout the day. Being on a busy schedule I know that sitting down to eat might make this en easy fix. I am already planning on when I will cook and where I will eat out when I have to in order to avoid this and sticking to solid food. 2 ounces of solid food seems like an awful small portion, were you still hungry? When did you have your sleeve done? ________________________________ From: kspencer67 <kspencer67@...> Sent: Mon, April 18, 2011 6:50:49 AM Subject: Re: BMI 32 CONSIDERING SLEEVE I think we all got the sleeve for restiction and to feel full sooner. Guest guest
Sue, I had my surgery on Feb 18th and I am rarely even hungry. I have to actually remember to eat!! Imagine that! Anyway, as everyone else has stated it is a lifestyle change. You have to be determined and stick with what you know needs to be done. To date (I just finished month 2), I have lost 45 lbs, just got under 200!! and moved from a size 22 down to a 16/18 (dependent on the clothes) so I am very happy so far with my decision! I never have cravings, never hear my tummy growl and I do not miss all of the things I use to eat with such pleasure. When I do decide that I want it, I just get a little amount and it appeases me. I took before surgery, one and two month pics to show my progress...not brave enough to share since I am by no means a hottie yet but I wanted to log my success and progress. Guest guest
Hi Sue I know that 2 oz does not seem like much, but on most days, that fills me up too! If I eat more than that, I feel very sick very quickly. My family actually laughs at my plates now. The full feeling comes very quickly and I have learned TO LISTEN to it. One extra bite can make you SO miserable. It's amazing! Guest guest
I'm almost three years post op from band to sleeve revision and about 3.5 years at goal. I still drink protein shakes. I'm not a huge fan of meat and I don't eat much of it so the protein shakes work. I don't get hungry with them either. I can eat about 3oz of dense protein or about 5-6oz of soft foods. Guest guest
I had a bmi of 34 when I was sleeved. It was two months ago as of yesterday. I did not go to Dr Aceves for financial reasons but he was my first choice. I enjoy reading the posts here so I've chosen to stay a member. I'm down 40 lbs as of today. I lost two pounds preop and 38 in these two months. I'm sooo happy with my decision and my progress. Anyone considering this surgery I would say do your research and then join us loosers. Guest guest
I would like to add to that, that if at all possible please select Dr. Aceves to do your surgery. I know not everyone has that option. I looked at it this way. When it came to my health, I wasn't going to bargain shop, I wanted the very best I could have when it was something that I knew I was going to have the rest of my life. I am sure there are other doctors who are good too. But for so many of us we just love Dr. Aceves and the quality care we received from him and his entire staff during our surgery and after our surgery. I am always happy when I see someone who is have great success in their weight loss journey. Congratulations to you. You made a great choice in having sleeve surgery. Guest guest
I was sleeved by Dr Aceves 4 1/2 months ago. I had high B/p on 3 meds, elevated cholesterol and was pre-diabetic. Not anymore. No Meds! Labs all normal. and down 64 pounds total (50 since surgery). I am 42 years old and have spent my life trying to do what has happened in the past 4 months. I praise God for Dr Aceves and his team because I would never have been able to afford to have this done otherwise. My starting BMI was 34.9 I am almost to normal now- 11 pounds from goal weight. Good luck with your decision. Sharon H From: Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2011 02:03:22 +0000Subject: Re: BMI 32 CONSIDERING SLEEVE I had a bmi of 34 when I was sleeved. It was two months ago as of yesterday.
