Hi,

Dr. Aceves did fix my hiatal hernia during my sleeve surgery. Nexium didn't work at all for me. So for me I now take the Generic Prilosec. And that works great for me--I take it every morning. I get the generic from my doctor and it cost less with a prescription than what you can buy OC. My generic Prilosec cost me $7.00 for a 30 day supply. I had other people tell me that Nexium didn't work that well for them either and suggested I try Prilosec. So while I was in Mexicali and could buy it at their Pharmacy for such a cheap price and you don't need a prescription I think I bought 90 supply while I was there. It is 2 years later and it is something I know I will just take the rest of my life. I have NO problem with that at all considering I lost 105 pounds. This is a small price to pay.

I had GERD prior to VSG conversion (from band) and used Prilosec. They asked me

to use Nexium- I did for a week and had bad side effects (gas, bloating,

abdominal pain) which I had experienced before when I had tried Nexium. I went

back to generic Prilosec (get it at Costco) and have had no problems. I have

some GERD late in the night and just take some Maalox or Tums and it goes away.

I am 3 weeks post op and doing great!

Good Luck. You will love Dr. Aceves and the hospital- best medical care I have

ever had (and I am a retired RN!).

I had horrible gerd before surgery. However, I didn't know what it was. After

surgery, dr. Aceves told me he fixed a terrible hernia for me. We discussed my

symptoms and he said I would likely need meds for a while after surgery. My

symptoms were bad for 4 weeks after surgery and have slowly alleviated. At 6

months out I am 10 pounds from goal and have NO symptoms of gerd at all and take

no meds for it all!!!!!! Maybe I'm lucky? I do avoid spicy foods and crystal

light which both aggrevate my symptoms. Good luck!

I have GERD and had VGS on 10-18-10. Dr.A fixed a hernia for me and I have only had problems once when i tried to have some Berry smoothie. I take prevacid and have for many years. I am down 50 pounds and very happy with my decision to have VGS.

Hi Priscilla,

Congratulations to you. You will be joining all the other people who are working on weight loss and some who have already lost the weight. Just remember the 1st month is the hardest month you will do--it is only 30 days and you can do anything for 30 days. We are here for suggestions, help, support and anything else you might want to talk about. This is a great site to just vent and say how you are feeling or if you need something.

Take care,

Hi all,

This is my question too. I have GERD and want it to stop. I was told bypass

was the way to do it... that the sleeve can have GERD as a side effect. Has

anyone with experience found that bypass helped with GERD and/or sleeve led to

GERD?

Thank you,

It depends on what is causing your GERD.  If it is from obesity the weight loss will fix it.  If it is from a hiatal hernia, Dr. Aceves will fix it when he does your surgery.  If it is from another cause then bypass is your best bet.

Hello Spmcc,

This is Priscilla (former user name pas03064). I'm the one who started this topic. Thought I would give you an update on my GERD since I had my sleeve done and hiatal hernia repaired on 1/06/11. My BMI was 33.6 on the day of surgery. Today I am 17 days out. I have been taking the prescribed 20mg of Nexium everyday as directed. Everything was going great for me until I started on Phase 2 of the post op diet. I immediately tried a lot of new things that I wasn't able to have on Phase1 and the heartburn started. Now I have heartburn almost all the time no matter what I drink or "eat," even after eliminating all the acidic type drinks and foods. I switched to Lactose free milk too. I feel that the prescribed Nexium just isn't strong enough for me. Dr Aceves and Dr Campos told me in the hospital to take the Nexium for a month, then I can go back to the 40 mg Protonix because I'll then be able to swallow the pill. He warned me that if my GERD could not be controlled with medication, then I may have to go back for a revision to a gastric bypass. I really don't want a bypass. I'm still very early out with the sleeve and have a lot more healing to do so I'm not drawing any conclusions yet. My sister had a bypass in Aug and her GERD has resolved. She no longer takes any medication for it. I spent 5 days with her after I was released from the hospital and she couldn't believe how much better I was doing than her so soon after surgery. I was on the Phase 1 post op diet the whole time I was there.

I sent an E-mail to Gaby (Dr Aceves' nurse who is in charge of follow up care) today to please advise me on what I can do to get relief. Personally I feel that if I could get back on my Protonix right away I would fine but I'll wait for Gaby to get back to me with Dr Aceves' advice. I'll post again after I get an answer.

GERD Stands for Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disorder, in layman's terms it's called reflux or acid reflux or just plain heartburn.

Might want to ask if you can increase to 40mg of Nexium daily. I sometimes use this higher dose in my patients initially or during problem times for short courses (30 days of so). Sharon

Hello again,

Gaby got back to me and said the Dr wants me to take the Nexium in a.m. on an empty stomach, then again 3 hrs before bedtime. If I still have heartburn, then to take Gaviscon in afternoon. Said do not take calcium carbonate products such as Tums, Rolaids, etc. They will help immediately but in a few hrs they will create more acid than I had to start with. After 1 month from surgery, I can still go back on my Protonix. Just started this yesterday and so far so good on Nexium 2x/day.

My understanding as to why the sleeve can increase GERD: Our bile system

doesn't realize that the stomach is now smaller so it continues to produce the

same amount of acid as it did before when we had our complete stomach. It takes

a while (months????) for the bile system to realize that the stomach is smaller

and doesn't need to produce as much acid. Personally, I know when I have

heartburn because it feels like a burning in my chest/esophagus. However, for a

friend of mine, she thought she was having a heart attack and spent 3 days in

the hospital ruling out her heart. Once she went on a PPI for GERD, she was

fine. Priscilla

Thanks Suzanne. So far, so good with the Nexium 2x/day. But if that changes,

I'll keep the OTC Prilosac in mind. Priscilla
