I'm new and would like to know if there's anyone out there who has had

the sleeve, DS, or the bypass surgery done by Dr. Acheves.

I'm 5', BMI 41, and 50 years young.

I don't think the banding is for me but the doctor's office suggested I

try this group to discuss the experiences of others.

I've been watching this site for a year now and have researched all the

surgeries for 3 years and don't know which one to choose.

I'm sooooo ready for this.

Hi Vicki

Glad you found this site, it is the greatest! I can only speak for the

lapband because thats what I had. People lose as much as 150lbs with it

and it is minimally invasive. But as far as the other surgeries go I

can say this...everyone of us trusted Dr. A with our lives. He is very

experienced in all forms of bariatric surgery so you have made a good

choice/ Also try going to obesityhelp.com, there are various boards for

each type of surgery. Keep researching and the right answer will come

to you. Best of luck & welcome!

Hi Vicki,

Welcome to our group. May I ask why you don't think the banding is for you? I am curious. Thanks.

Hi Vicki,That is great to do your research and check out all the options, it sounds like you have made your decision and just need to set a date :) :) I had the band and I'm not familiar with the sleeve or any other WLS for that matter :) I'm curious why not the band? The band was the only way I wanted to go for many reasons...no re-routing of my insides, less side effects (dumping, problem absorbing vitamins), less deaths from the surgery, the adjustability. Anyway, I'm sure you have reasons for choosing your type of WLS, just curious what they are. I wish you much success!Take care, Cyrena DOB: 1/19/07240/154/150www.cyrenaweeks.blogspot.com Hello ladies

Hi Cyrena,

I love your name.

The gastric sleeve has never had any deaths, there's no dumping, (YUK) and none of the other side effects you mentioned unlike the regular GB surgeries.

I am a self pay and although the band is the cheapest and is less invasive the weight loss is much slower and thoes fills get expensive.

I am having surgery which one don't know in Mexico and I live in Tehachapi CA which is about 6 hours from there.

Talk soon,

vicki

Hi Vicki...I was banded in December and I met my own goal of 103lbs in 10 months... again, with a band. (I am currently at 110lbs lost in 11 months)I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and I *think* if I had it all to do over again I might go with a sleeve. Let me explain.

One of the big reasons for banding is that it can be reversed if need be. Well, what is that need? Why would it need to be " reversed " at all? We ALL want to keep our bands for life. When someone does happen to lose their band for any reason it is like losing a limb. We all thought it would be " forever " and no reason to ever lose a band and regain fat. So do we want it forever or not? Sleeves ARE forever, bands are hopefully forever.

Complications with sleeves LONG TERM are less. Short term complications from the actual surgery are less with banding. But long term they are less with a sleeve. Sleeves are more invasive and it IS forever, but isn't that what we want? Isn't that what we are looking for?

I'll be really honest, I'm half considering switching from a band to a sleeve. I don't want to mess with fills and restriction. I want a simple cure. Period, the end.I'm at my own personal goal now, I'm in a healthy BMI and I love my band, don't misunderstand. I do. But I've been thinking lately about something that is really bizarre and it's only fair I mention this.

What if Dr. A retires? He's the ONLY person I would want changing my surgery type. If I go with a sleeve Dr. A is the only doc I'd want doing my surgery. In my own case it's kind of a fear of ... now or never? What if he retires? What if he moves away? What if what if what if? If I am going to switch surgery types it has to be soon so Dr. A can do it. No more worries about slips or erosion. Get a sleeve and be done with it. No fills, no restriction issues, no nothing. Just an itty bitty stomach. Another unreasonable fear I have is what if I erode? There may be scar tissue that prevents me from converting to a sleeve. If I do it not, it's a non issue.

You have a great deal to think about. Consider if you want this a potential short term fix or a long term forever fix. It's a huge issue that is individual to each person.I would never dream of getting bypass or DS, farrr too many problems and complications. Those are issues of labs for life to see if you are absorbing BASIC nutrition. Sleeve and bands.... you absorb what you eat. Period.

Personal opinion for safety reasons I'd go with a band or sleeve. On Nov 16, 2007 12:01 AM, VICKI <woffys1girl@...> wrote:

Oh good Vicki, I'm so glad you won't have to deal with all those yuky side effects!!! That is great you are close to Mexico. Good luck in your pursute of knowledge, let us know what you decide :) How much quicker is the weight loss? I know I wouldn't have wanted to lose any quicker than I did with the band - 86lbs in 9 months :)Oh, and thank you for the compliment on my name :) Cyrena 240/154/150DOB: 1/19/07

From: V Frazier <sweeetdaisy@...>100-plus Sent: Sun, June 27, 2010 9:29:54 PMSubject: Hello ladies

Today has been pretty good, other than me wanting to exercise!!! LOLI have to control myself!!LOLI am just so psyched about starting this new chapter that I am ready to just jump right on in there and doing it.I sure wasn't feeling like jumping in anywhere last week when I was so sore LOL.But now that the soreness has gone away,I can barely contain myself. I have been watching all kinds of exercise videos on the puter and it just gets me all excited about trying them all.I almost gave in yesterday but I managed to reel myself back in. I know I have to give my body a chance to relax and recover before I challenge it again or else I could hurt myself and that is the last thing I want to do.I have been trying to look at exercise in a whole new way, other than, as a weight loss tool. I think it's working. Now I just want to exercise

for exercise' sake, and, I'm not looking at it as a temporary measure but as a lifetime goal.* These thoughts are subject to change week to week!* LOLI thought it best to add the disclaimer in case I fall off the wagon in the future,LOL.My exercise plan seems doable.I worked out a schedule and since I'm not sore from Fridays workout(upper body) I'm pretty confident everything will go according to plan. Of course I Know it won't always go according to schedule but I believe it is something I can stick to.Mondays are Aerobics day-whether that's Tae Bo or some other form of cardioTuesdays are Upper Body workoutsWednesdays are Lower body workoutsThursdays are Learn to Dance dayFridays are kettlebell day-so far I only do the kettlebell swing cause that's the only one I sorta know how to do but there's a whole lot of different moves to learn for it. I have a workout video for it.I have to admit, when I finish

some of these workouts,I feel as if I didn't do enough, cause some of them don't make me feel as if I worked hard,so I have to watch myself to keep from over-training.The dance portion of my plan especially makes me feel that way.I sweat while dancing but once I've cooled down,I don't feel like I worked out at all and need to do something more.I try to stay at it for a whole 60 minutes, since I'm just learning I end up doing a lot of the basic foot work, but I try and stay active for the whole 60 minutes.Man,if you had told me a few months ago I would end up with this problem, I never would have believed you! I avoided sweating and huffing and puffing at all cost! I did almost everything I could to avoid it.But now, I don't mind so much the sweating or the heavy breathing.Sure I attempted to exercise before but it was just a half-hearted effort most of the time and years apart.Every now and again I gave it a real effort but as

soon as I stepped on the scale and saw no results I gave up and didn't try again for years.I have no idea what the different is this time.I can't even claim something just clicked or it just fell into place.I have to make the conscious effort every single time, every day and I can't claim determination or will, cause really, it's not any of those either.I just do,whether I feel like it or not or want to or not. I can psych myself up, but honestly, the motivation isn't there, there' s no passion,no drive, nothing! So,it's solely a conscious choice, with no feeling involved.I don't know if that's good or bad,but for right now,it just is.maybe things will get better, change, improve, whatever , but in the meantime, this is it.I just have to work with it.All I can say is, at least I am able to choose to exercise and not be turned off to it because of my emotions, which is why I gave up when I didn't lose any weight before. My focus is to

make it an integral part of my life and I think that may be why I am able to exercise without all my emotions interfering. I don't know,at least I'm doing it! :)Daisy
