Guest guest
First on the topic of tinnitis...can we have a poll to ask those affected by tinnitis if they are also bothered by migraines. Last week one of my doctors said my tinnitis, he feels, is a migraine affecting my auditory nerve just as my " regular " migraines affect my optic nerve. Second, , you should really ask your sister to poll her knowledgeable colleagues about this severely handicapped child. Granted he may be profoundly retarded (we certainly can't say he isn't) but can they reach him at all? I doubt it! It is more of an...he is retarded so why bother giving him sound issue...they DO NOT know what this child might respond to, IF he could receive sound input. Okay off soapbox but none of us knew totally what sounds to expect and even if lullabies could soothe him I think it would be worth it...barring physical conditions that made surgery too risky. Guest guest
Lee, While you can't test the student, there is the SIT (student inervention)team process that is, thanks to No Child Left Behind, mandatory in all states now I believe. You do not need parental approval to begin the SIT team process of observation and informal evaluation. The parents need to be made aware of the problem being looked at by the team, and that the team is meeting to discuss the student. The team decides upon intervention strategies, implements them, documents how the student was doing before and after intervention, and then can refer the student to special education if the interventions do not result in improvement. Once this is done, if the parents refuse permission to evaluate for special education, the district, thanks to the SIT team process, has documentation that they can take to due process to request that the court intervene to allow identification, and, if appropriate, placement into special education. It's a long, drawn out process. No student can be placed into special education now without going through the SIT team process for referral unless they're identified at a birth-three screening. The SIT team process shows that there is an academic need for special education services, which is the ONLY reason they can be offered. At least this is my understanding.
