Re: HA in implanted ear?

My implant surgery rendered my implanted ear completely deaf so there was no

sense in wearing a hearing aid in that ear. I was able to wear a hearing aid

in my other ear during the interim so that did help. After I was hooked up I

was advised (this was over 6 years ago) not to wear the hearing aid in the

other ear so that I would acclimate more quickly to the implant. Some of my

friends did choose to wear their HA in their other ear because that was what

made

things comfortable for them. You should do whatever you feel best doing.

Have any of you tried wearing your hearing aid in your implanted ear

while waiting for activation? Have any of you asked your Drs if that

was OK to do? I know that the implant usually takes the rest of the

residentual (sp?) hearing but I've heard of some who still had that

little bit of hearing.

I ask because I'm having a hard time hearing with one hearing aid and

still have 2 more weeks to go before being activated. Don't think I

can get an earlier appt even tho I feel ready for it.

Sheree,

If you had any hearing left after surgery, its most certainly reduced

from before. 2 more weeks and you will hear again in that ear. Patience is

a wonderful asset when one has it. LOL

I tried that, as I was implanted in both ears at the same time. It did not work

for me, because I lost all the residual hearing in both, but it didn't hurt

anything to try. I was very careful when I put the earmold in. I think if you

are careful, it should be okay. Good luck.

After my first CI was activated, curiosity got the best of me and I tried

using a HA in my implanted ear. I couldn't hear anything even when the

volume was turned all the way up. Hearing tests at 3 months post activation

showed that I was completely deaf in my implanted ear. The same tests were

conducted in my other ear following implantation and those tests also

confirmed total loss of residual hearing.

I also have two weeks before advation and I do not want to jeopardize

the bonding process with the cochlea and the seal on the cochlea with

the array. I also have to stay off from using CPA for three weeks and I

am not going jeopardize that for the same reason as well.

,

Sorry, CPAP (machine used for peoeple with Sleep Apnea) that machine

provides positive air pressure like a air sprint to prevent the

collapse of the airway during sleeping. Similarly you should not blow

your nose for the first two weeks or so to prevent air pockets under

the healing skin flap.

Sheree I don't think there is any reason why you can't wear your hearing aid in

your implanted ear until activation but just to be sure you should call your

doctor's office tomorrow and ask them if it is OK.

Good luck with the activation.
