Guest guest
Hi Bill, Follow your surgeon's advice. If your eardrum is intact, you might not need to replace it. Its being sunken or whatever will no longer affect your hearing, or lack of hearing. The CI will replace the role of the 3 bones in the middle ear. The Dr is wise to seek advice from his fellow surgeons. Usually a tympanoplasty is done if there is a hole in the eardrum. You don't want the eardrum perforated because water, and everything else can get in there and cause infections. But if the eardrum is whole, there might be no reason to replace it. Listen to what your Dr. says. The Original I am to be implanted very soon but my surgeon would like to hear from his colleagues on whether I should have the tympanoplasty done or not. My ear drum is has no perferations or holes but has collapsed due to all the ear infections I had while growing up... they were frequent and severe between the ages of 5 and 10. Thanks! -Bill
