Guest guest
There have been a lot of posts about the recent volulntary recall by AB on other forums. I am afraid I don't understand why some are so negative about this recall. Again, I think this shows the integrity of the company, not otherwise. When I first saw the scare emails on this forum, I became very concerned. I called my surgeon immediately. I respect this doctor completely, not only as a professional, but also as a wonderful, kind and honest individual. He was in surgery, but investigated this " recall " and called me back immediately afterwards. He shared the facts, which are also included in the letter that Sandy Mintz posted. He stated with me that ALL devices CAN have failure, due to moisture problems. This is a possibility that each implant user may face. The facts are that the part from one supplier has a 2% greater chance for problems with moisture. When you are looking at 99.5% and 97.5% and companies are willing to recall units voluntarily over this margin to ensure quality for our patients - I think we should be jumping for joy that we are using a company with such good ethics. This company came out in the open, rather than trying a cover up. This doctor also took time out of his busy schedule and made sure that he called me back, as it was late Friday afternoon, and he did not want me to worry the whole weekend. I also shared with him that it is my biggest fear that one of my implants will fail, as I do so well with my bilateral units. I really do not think that I could handle being deaf again..... The CI's have allowed me to function normally professionally, socially, and at home, and I have real fears about implant failure. He assured me that in all the times that he has had to reimplant a CI, the patient has always did as well or even better with the second implant, as the new implant usually had better technology and better surgical procedures of implantation. His words gave me so much comfort. I now realize that it is very counterproductive to worry about something that may or may not happen, and if something does happen to my implants - for whatever reason - there will be quality products at AB to help me again. I was in the 120 trial and met the engineers and audiologists. I also had a tour of the production area. It was so obvious that each employee at AB is totally commimtted to developing quality..... to the point of perfection .... devices for us to enjoy. I was totally impressed with each person that I met, and they are the cream of the crop from the whole world - from China to Australia - every tip of the world working hard to give us a better life. I was also impressed with how each employee would not " bad mouth " or make any negatives comments about other companies - stating that ALL the companies were good. Too bad that the other companies do not share the same philosophy of professional respect and prefer to stoop to inciteful articles and smear tactics. Rather than being scared by recalls after getting all the information about the recalls, I am more reassured by the VOLUNTARY recalls made by AB. Personally, the longer that I interact with different individuals with CI's and the AB company, the more I am convinced that I made the correct choice for me by using AB.
