Beth,

That's exactly what my audiologist is doing. In her experience she has found

most people have the best speech understanding using ACE. I really like what

I'm hearing so far and will continue to use a volume map until I feel

comfortable trying CIS, SPEAK or a sensitivity map.

In my case of losing speech understanding, I'm not really sure what is going

on. I don't know if the map is to blame or the fact that my progress has

reached a plateau. I have no idea...

Dunno what to say on the caseworker except maybe she needs to be sat on

while you tell her exactly what you want from her. Where is that elephant

now......

And no you have not reached a plateau, methinks you just had a minor

setback with the current map which can bad probably will be fixed with the

next one. Have faith my dear .

No – I don’t think you need to worry about that. – it’s the map. If

it’s still a problem a week later – it’s not the right map for you. Just

tell your audiologist next week that the map never worked out for you. I’m

sure she’ll be disappointed that you stuck it out. Don’t forget to make

sure you keep one of your good maps from now on. You have two processors so

you should have 4 different maps. One of them would be the old one.

I want my old map back. LOL. When I see my audi on the 15th I'm going to ask

if she can put my old map back on my processor. At least I'll have one map I

can use to understand speech. I really do hope things get better because I

will be having word discrimination testing next week. I was so excited about

that but now I'm not so sure...

Alice,

I e-mailed my audi today to tell her about my lack of progress and how I

don't think this current map is working for me. Hopefully I will hear back

from her tomorrow.

When I see her next week I will definitely ask about keeping my old map on

one processor. Would it be possible to put my old map (the one I had before

last Tuesday) on my processor? Are older maps saved on the computer?

Yes,

Your maps are saved in her computer by number.

Yes, old MAPs are saved on the computer, or at least, printed out. If

your audiologist is worth his or her salt, all MAPs should be printed

out and placed in your chart for reference in the future.

I share in your frustrations. There was a MAP that I had liked

through my third and fourth MAPpings, but that one is now too weak and

" woody " (ACE at 800 Hz) and I'm undecided if I like CIS and ACE at

1200 Hz better. This is the crux of my problem... for a while, I

thought I was at the tip of achieving speech recognition and later

discrimination, but now I'm just hanging in there. I know when people

are talking, when things are making noise, and I can recognize

environmental sounds wonderfully like hearing my house mate step down

the stairs three floors up, opening and closing his door,

creak-creaking down the stairs; my cat coughing up a hair ball from

the pantry; the water gurgling down the pipes in the basement; the

furnace pilot light clicking on the gas in the furnace to start

heating the house, hearing this even through the carpet and the living

room floor; and the quiet sounds that a piece of Saran Wrap makes when

you wrap up a piece of food for storage (which I never heard before);

the differences in sounds when you rub your hand along skin, sweater,

countertops, wallpaper, etc. But no, not for speech. I have this

feeling that " something " needs to be 'sharpened' but I have my sixth

MAPping next Tuesday and that is the day when I " graduate " to the

Esprit 3G BTE. I think I'll continue to return for MAP refinements

with both the BWP and 3G for a couple of months. My audiologist did

mention that prelingually profoundly deaf persons such as myself have

an astonishingly long time to soak up sounds (for the first six

months)... so this gives me the idea that my auditory nerve is

continuing to learn. Every day when I put on my BWP, sounds sound

clearer and crisper than the day previously. Like Joni says, it takes

time. I'm not pushing myself at all, just allowing every day to

happen and " to go with the flow. "

So excited for you as you progress on your journey.

Hi

I really appreciate reading about your experiences as someone who is

prelingually deaf. Not only do I find this fascinating, it also helps me to

better understand (and appreciate) the changes that I've noticed so far with

my CI. Unfortunately I haven't been making any progress with my current map.

In fact today every time I hear a voice it sounds high pitched, shrill and

almost painful even when the volume on my 3G is turned all the way down. For

those who know what it sounds like, I compare it to nails on a chalkboard.

( be thankful you've never heard this sound before! LOL!)

I'm so happy that you'll be graduating to the 3G at your next mapping. I

think you'll really like the convenience of the 3G and the fact that you're

no longer tied to cords. When I used an FM system with my HA's for many

years I was tethered to a " Y " shaped direct audio input cord. Now that I

have my 3G, I love the fact that I'm free of wires and cords. (Look Ma, no

cords! <smile>)

I wish you continued success with your CI! I'm continually intrigued and

fascinated by your progress (as well as others on this list) who are

prelingually profoundly deaf from birth. So many times I read stories from

postlingually deafened people like me (which are equally interesting), but

stories like yours really help me better understand what the CI experience

is like for someone born Deaf. As someone who plans to work with the blind,

deaf and/or deafblind in the social work field, this information will be of

great help to the future clients I serve.
