Hi ,

The 3G is set on one of 2 different channels to beep as a low battery

signal. Ask your audiologist if she has set the low battery signal for

you. I just ignore mine anyway, and wait for the processor to turn off.

Sometimes it's 5 minutes, sometimes it's 5 hours. But, yes, it should be

programmed into the processor. Perhaps your dynamic range isn't large

enough to accommodate hearing that sound yet.

The replacing of the metallic sound with high pitched sound just

indicates that your brain is now hearing different sounds. And the

change in volume is most likely because the volume IS changing, rather

than a problem with the 3G. For instance if you hear something on your

left side (the side with the implant?) it will be louder than if you hear

it on the right side. So if you are moving around away from the source

of the sound, the volume will go louder and softer. Music from your

bedroom will be softer when you are in the kitchen and so forth. And

even in the same room, the side with the implant will hear it louder than

the side without. This is the same way your ears worked, when they did

work. So figure out if you're moving away from the sound when it's

fading or what. Also if you are listening to a radio or CD, some songs

are louder than others anyway. Mention it to the audiologist when you go

for your next mapping, but I think it's probably not anything to worry

about. Your dynamic range will change with each new map.

The high pitched whining sound could be that you're not used to

hearing high frequencies anymore. You were without hearing for almost 10

years, and the high frequencies are the first to go. I know I have the 2

highest frequencies turned off for my 3G because plastic bags sounded a

sharp as firecrackers to me. Still do. And the really high pitched

sounds were very annoying for me. Keep track of when the sounds change,

and which are annoying to you, so that the audiologist can help map. The

more details she has, the easier it is for her to do this.

And just wait for those batteries to die on you. Don't change them

ahead of time.
