Folks sometimes have questions about CapTel here on the forum. I thought I'd

share a link to their website with their quarterly newsletter. Might find some

answers to questions there.

GRRRRRRRRRRR and WA is still deaf on this issue! We must be one of 6 states

that don't have it. I need it so badly for my job yet, state don't listen.

Last I heard about Washington, they are looking into taxing of cell phones.

It works the same way as relay tax on land phone, but more and more people

are dumping land phone for cell phone, hence, the need to have relay tax on

cell phones. They said the biggest concern is lobbyists, namely cell phone

companies!

If all goes well, Washington might start CapTel sometimes next summer. I

hope it does.

Snoopy....................I'm also on the waiting list for Cap-Tel, I feel

like a little kid waiting for Christmas. LOL. I have both TDY and VCO, but

will be very happy to get the cap-Tel as that doesn't have to have relay. Pat

Yes, there is a person in your conversation on Captel. You don't see or

hear them - but they are there. They are much like the ones on a relay

system. I had it but never liked it. I had enough hearing with aids or my CI

where I could understand most of the conversation, and the captel was so slow

that I often was finished talking to a person LONG before the translater

caught up! If you have NO hearing it IS a godsend, because you don't know it's

lagging and won't get confused. Just don't say anything you wouldn't say in

front of a police officer - or your mother! (wink) Jackie :o)

I have a Captel, it's a God sent to me. I can hear enough now with the CI

that I can hear the people talking to me but I can't make out everything.

The Captel is slow and a lot of times they make a lot of mistakes but I am

still graceful for it.

Oh, I'm glad to have it, Patsy. I just hate using it <g>.

We just got the new CapTel 800i yesterday. It's our first CapTel phone;

previously we used a TTY. (We got the TTY for free after I went deaf last

year.) Now that I have the CIs and can hear a little bit on the phone (at

least enough to hear my own voice!), we decided to get the new

CapTel. (It's not available for free through the state yet and we didn't

want to wait for it to become available; it was only $99 though which is

very affordable.)

We tried this phone at the HLAA convention in Nashville and were really

impressed. My husband also has a hearing loss and has been making ALL the

phone calls, so he is thrilled to have captioning available now. There's a

slight lag but not much, and we are extremely happy with this phone. It

uses an internet connection and I think that makes it faster than the old

CapTel phone.

I can hear a few words on the phone but not well enough to be comfortable

with it (just yet). I'm hoping having the CapTel will give me the

confidence to practice with the phone more! :)

Thanks for the info, Jackie.

It doesnt sound like a service I would use, but I will keep all my options open.
