Hi ,

Recovery from surgery depends on many factors. Have you had surgery

with general anesthesia before? That should give you an idea of how long

it takes to recover. I was very sleepy for about a week after my

surgery. As a matter of fact, Princess died a few days after my

surgery, and I wasn't even aware of it for like 5 days because I was

sleeping, and not watching TV. Probably the last person on earth to hear

of the news.

Only the ear that has the implant will be deafened. If you are having

your worse ear implanted, you can still use the better ear on the phone

at work. I'm assuming you are getting only one implant, correct? So

however you hear now with the other ear is how you will hear after the

surgery.

You will have no hearing in the ear that has been implanted until your

first mapping. And you might not have great hearing after the initial

mapping either. The first mapping tends to be conservative, with a very

narrow dynamic range, so sounds might be real strange, or just sounds.

This goes away with subsequent mappings. But since it is only the

implanted ear that is affected, you can still function with the other

ear.

There are NO stupid questions. If you don't know the answer to

something, ask away. That is why we are here. The only stupid question

is the one you didn't ask because you thought it was stupid. Really, and

if I or someone else here doesn't know the answer, we will find out for

you. So ask anything you want.

Have you checked out the website www..com There is a section of

frequently asked questions that might help as well.

You don't want to wait another year for the implant, your friends are

right about that. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Subject: Working

Please bear with these what may sound like stupid questions, but

honestly can help me when/if to have the ci.. How long have you had

to stay out of work when this is done? I am guessing that between the

time of the surgery and the time of activation you have no hearing. My

job

is working on the telephone and if I am not able to do that for a

while then I need to let my company know asap so they can make other

arrangements. I do not work July and August, but many have told me

not to wait that long to have it done. Of which I agree.. But I also

cannot afford to risk my job by not being able to work. Right now the

ampliphied telephone helps mostly. Though the stress is quite high.

Many thanks for all your help.
