She was to have been activated the day ofter her 2nd CI surgery but due to her slow recovery, believe that will take place this week. I discovered the night before surgery I was to report to the hospital at 5:45 AM, a 1 ½ hour trip, meaning I had to wake up at 3:45 AM. Yikes! My adrenaline kicked in. Was I able to settle down to a night's rest? Nope. Read a novel in Braille for a while. Finally did fall asleep. Suddnely bolted upright. Did I miss my alarm? I sleepily put on my HA and checked the talking clock. Sounded like it said, " 5 AM. " Yike! I ran to my front door and yelled for my interpreter. No sign of her. More awake now. Put my CI on the other ear, heart beating fast. " 1 AM. " Whew! Back to bed. Woke up about every hour on the hour til the alarm vibrated. At the hospital I was given a gown, shorts, robe, booties, sheets and blanket, and had quite a time of it repeatedly untangling myself from this maze of bed clothing. Went through a number of similar stations, each asking my name, birth date, surgery type, which ear, and even had WW marked next to my left ear in blue ink, matching my bedding, all precaution to the correct surgery. Into the cool operating room I go. Now I am really shaking in my booties. The staff are friendly and relaxed, calming me a bit. I am forewarned the oxygen mask will be put on my face. I panic, back to my 6-year-old day with an ether mask over my face and being held down by about six nurses. Seventy five minutes later, I hear a blur of sounds. Am I alive?! The audie's voice comes in clearer, repeatedly saying my name and identifying himself. I cannot open my eyes and mouth. I can tgesture I am awake. To the outpatient nurse I signed basic needs (i.e., drink, restroom, sick), all translated by my interpreter. The nurse takes steps to move me toward being released. I drink and eat and use the restroom. No problem. Then she wants me to eat toast with butter, jelly or peanut butter. All I could stomach was toast with butter. I popped the toast into my mouth, surprised to find it laden with a thick layer of jelly and my hand icky sticky. She walks me around a bit and says I am doing really well, but my tummy was not so sure. The surgeon arrived to give my interpreter the discharge instructions. He then asked how I was feeling. Up came the toast and everything else, allover me and the bed. He changed my status to inpatient. Thuss followed round the clock, sleep interruptions every few hours by touching my shoulder or feet to check vital signs and dispense meds with food. Ever eat very sweet Orange Jello at midnight? Vanilla Pudding at 4 AM? Late morning an IV is inserted in my hand for anti-nausea drug and fluids, resulting innausea associated with past chemo IVs. After nearly 24 hours in inpatient I was released to my home with my dog guide, Telly. No dizziness and metallic taste this time round. Intermittent head pain, nausea and fatigue lessen with each passing day, minimized by the anticipation, excitement and cautious optimism of activation and better hearing, postponed from the day after surgery to this Thursday. LOL Before I broke mine, I used it to check the time at night when I was away from home. Gave me peace of mind. I cant imagine wearing an ITE AND the CI in same ear. Guest guest Posted July 27, 2005 Report Share Posted July 27, 2005 , The audie did a lot of testing prior to my surgery, unaided each ear, CI alone, HA alone, CI & HA together, and SIN )Speech in Noise. I suspect to make comparisons after I am activated. I don't recall ever having had the SIN before, but it consisted of being at an event similar to a coctail party and people's voices progressively getting louder.
