Can anyone help me who has had their electrodes migrate?

I've started feeling numbness in my cheekbone.

I've heard implantees mention electrodes migrating and wonder where it does it

migrate and how it feels, and most importantly, what is done when that happens.

Thanks for your help.

What is your name? That would help. Have you seen your surgeon or

talked to him about this? He'd be the first person I would go to with thsi

kind of concern.

I know someone who is bilateral and had his surgeries in MI. I will forward

your message to him to see if he can make a recommendation.

I will also ask my CI doc for a recommendation. He pretty much knows most of

the CI surgeons across the country.

Which CI does your daughter have?

Thank you for your comments. If anyone has any recommendations, I would love to

hear them. The last surgery was emergency so I didn't have a lot of options, but

I have already decided that if we need to do anything further, we will change

surgeons. We are at Children's Hospital Of Michigan so my next logical choice is

U of M.

Thanks again.

U Mich is a GREAT choice. Dr. Telian is highly recommended. Unless the

magnet is too strong on the processor, I can't imagine it moving, much

less twice. I know they give it extra " slack " to allow for a child's

head to grow. They don't do that with adults, but children's heads will

continue to grow, so they leave extra slack so the array won't be pulled

out of the ear (or they should - perhaps that is what is happening) Not

enough slack, and as she grows, it's getting pulled out.

Dr. Weber is the Cochlear Americas chief surgeon. He does the

training for other surgeons, etc. He might be a choice, too, for this

problem.

Only migration problem I've had is steel hair clips migrating toward my

magnet. Now that I'm bilateral, they migrate in either direction!

Good luck,

I am a new member. My daughter is 3 1/2 and got her Freedom CI 09/2009.

We have had 2 subsequent surgeries because the CI keeps " migrating " to

the surface. No infection, so the surgeon keeps putting it back and

attaching it more securly.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this or had it happen to them. I

am being told it is very unusual.

Thank you for your comments. If anyone has any recommendations, I would

love to hear them. The last surgery was emergency so I didn't have a lot

of options, but I have already decided that if we need to do anything

further, we will change surgeons. We are at Children's Hospital Of

Michigan so my next logical choice is U of M.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your great comments. Dr Tellian will be my next stop if it

moves this time

We are trying the less powerful magnet this time too. Strength of. 5. Is

that the littlest?

I tried to reach out to Dr Weber but they said for legal reasons he couldn't

talk to me.

I am also a patient of Dr. Telian at the University of Michigan, and I recommend

him very highly. He is the Medical Director for the Cochlear Implant Program at

U of M, and he told me in the 20+ years he's been doing this, he's implanted

over 200 people. He's also a very nice man.

Yes Amy, 0.5 is the weakest strength magnet.

The fact that Dr. Weber wouldn’t talk to you about what happened.......that

alone would make me very suspicious. If I were you, I would speak with an

attorney right away.

Dr. Arts @ UM Hospital did my first CI in March and I have scheduled my second

CI for September 9.  I really like him and my Nucleus 5 CI.

Dr. Telian is closer, so he'd be the one to seek out first. Half

strength .5 is the weakest magnet. And you can unscrew it away from

the head, too. Just use a dime to move it back in the holder. Your audi

can show you how it's done. But every time your little girl has to be

re-implanted, she's losing time from hearing. So if it happens again,

see Dr. Telian. Or maybe make an appt and see him ahead of time so if it

becomes an emergency situation again, he'll have the tests and x rays and

know what's going on.

I think Dr. Weber only talks to other Drs. Might be part of his

agreement with Cochlear. I know he is very good. He did my Nucleus 5

implant here in Cleveland before going on to Cochlear. But I'm betting

Dr. Telian can handle this.

Good luck,

I agree with here. I would make the appt with Dr. Telian BEFORE anything

else occurs. Perhaps he might be able to suggest something to make sure it

doesn’t happen again.

That is what I would do.

Hello guys

This post got me interested, I have Nucleus 5 was implanted 27th april 2011

activated 26th may 2011. I don't have a clue what strengh magnet iv got inside

my head but the coil I have for the CI ro work states " 1 " if that helps? L☺L

I'm quite new! I know that I will require further MRI scans in the future and

1.5 telsa MRI stregh is permitted, anything above that then the magnet will need

to be temproary removed surgically.

The internal magnet is the same, the extrernal magnet comes in several

strentghs.

If you require MRIs you could opt to remove the internal magnet

permanently and use wig tape to hold the coil in place. This is not uncommon

for those who require MRIs on a regular basis.

Do you know what they must to do in order to run an MRI at 1.5? Your

head is wrapped as if it was in a vise to keep the internel device from

moving.

Hi rob

Yes I am fully aware of that and so is my neurology doctor. Anything above 1.5

telsa then the magnet needs to be removed vice versa anything up to 1,5 telsa

then the head just needs too be bandaged. Hopefully I won't need that many MRIs

in future but it is likely because od my history of gaving 5 stroes.

Dr. Telian can handle this.

Good luck,

Thanks for your great comments. Dr Tellian will be my next stop if

it moves this time We are trying the less powerful magnet this time too.

Strength of. 5. Is that the littlest?

I tried to reach out to Dr Weber but they said for legal reasons he

couldn't talk to me.

Thank you for your help.

Thanks all!

I will see if Dr Telian will have a consultation with me in preparation for

anything else going wrong - God forbid.  We are praying this will be it.

The internal magnet is the same, the extrernal magnet comes in several

strentghs.

If you require MRIs you could opt to remove the internal magnet

permanently and use wig tape to hold the coil in place. This is not uncommon

for those who require MRIs on a regular basis.

Re: CI Migration

Good move Amy. Better to try to avert a problem then try to handle it once it

comes on.

Good luck and keep us apprised of how she is doing.

Happy Hearing!
