Guest guest
That brings a question to mind. Does anyone know how long those shots are good. I had one in September 2005 but will be having my bilateral surgery in March. Is my shot still good or do I need another one. Thanks!! Connie A ADAMS <justagram14@...> wrote: Wow - I just read that with tears in my eyes. So many times, I read messages on this list questioning whether or not a CI patient should take the precautions against meningitis. Why anyone would question taking the preventive measures recommended by the FDA, I'll never know. Can you imagine what these parents must feel and where was the surgeon who should have insisted that this was done before the child's surgery? Please - if you have not taken this preventative measure - go to your implant website and read the recommendations. You can find the links to each manufacturers website at http://www..com/implanthtml<http://www..com/implant.html>. Take them to an Urgent Care or wherever you need to go and protect yourself or your child. It's an easy thing to do. The recommendations are different for adults and children so be sure you know which one you or your child needs to have. Dixie - Thank you for sending this very important message to the group. Guest guest
Connie, I would check with the doctor but I believe we are supposed to have a booster every 5 years. Don't quote me on that. I could be very wrong. Good luck with your upcoming biateral surgery! That's exciting. Alice http://www..com > > That brings a question to mind. Does anyone know how long those shots are good. Guest guest
Because I was at the Dr for something else today, I asked how often you had to get a Pneumovax shot. First he told me you don't get the first until you are 60. I mentioned being in a " high risk group " so I already had one. Oh, then you don't get the second until 65. I plan to check this out with my regular primary care guy. I was in for a same day appt, so you get whoever is on call. But I checked it out, too. What the Dr. today did say is you MUST get a pneumonia shot every year. Which I do anyway. No sense in risking your health. 4a. Guest guest
This message might appear twice the first time I tried to send it it just disappear. but anyway' because of this discussion I emailed my Otolaryngolist as I could not remember having gotten this shot. His reply to me was that It is not a requirement for implantation. (I'm in Philadelphia) It has been suggested to do so because of a concern that there is an increased risk of meningitis in cochlear implantation patients. He then tells me Nonetheless, it is reasonable for you to have such a vaccination and I can get it from my primary physician. I will be calling him first thing Monday. If I hadnt read about this here I would never have know about it. Thanks All... > > Because I was at the Dr for something else today, I asked how often you > had to get a Pneumovax shot. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing that, . Doesn't a response like that from a physician make you want to scream...duh!! increased risk of meningitis why would you NOT discuss this with your patient. My surgeon explained to me that it a protocol now, which is not precisely a requirement (although I think he would've balked at doing the surgery without me getting the vaccine) but something that is considered an essential step in the process. Makes me so mad when I hear about medical providers being so casual about patients health and well being. Guest guest
, You get a pneumonia vaccine every year? I know the flu shot can be given annually, but anyone can get a pneumonia vaccine yearly? What is it called, do you know? I know it's not the pneumovax, as you mentioned it's generally not given until around age 60 (or later) unless one is high risk, like ourselves. I'm curious. Thanks. But I did had already took FLU shot this year so I had FLU shot for few years because I am not easy and have weak immuune and serious bad allergies all around year and around work with the children in daycare/preschool but now I am not sure about FLU shot for me in the future. I have to wait and see to find out soon. I showed my mother about this part other day. But even I never had fever for few years but do not know why. Also, I'm not 60 - do I need to get a " booster' pneumax, or whatever it's called, on the fifth year from my first? I got one in 2002 but didnt have one for either my reimplant or my bilateral surgery in 2005. Thanks - Jackie

Guest guest
You know Colleen, you can walk across the street when the light red. Most of the time you do this, you won't get hit by a car. But if you do get hit by a car, when walking across the street and the light is red, you have only yourself to blame. Like wise you may go through your entire life without the meningitis vaccine, and not get meningitis. However if you are the unlucky one that does get it and you don't have the vaccine to protect you, you will have only yourself to blame. You have been warned of the risks, and been given the recommendation to get the shots by professionals that know that the shot can safe guard against it happening. I too found an article from the CDC that I would like to share: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/VIS/vis-mening.pdf Also a link from the article that you sent talks about there being an increased risk if you have an implant with a " positioner " not sure what that is but here is the article--apparently they have not been used since 2002: http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/safety/020606-cochlear.html Connie Deborah C <gypsyheart1963@...> wrote: I thought it would be helpful to share this link courtesy of the Center for Disease Control regarding use of vaccines for prevention of Meningitis in people with CI: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/issues/cochlear/cochlear-gen.htm Deb --- cop <silverman_love_2000@...> wrote: > I never taken or had a vaccaine or pnemonina shot > before and I was > fine for 17 yrs now. Guest guest
I had gotten the original pneumovax vaccine in 1994 because I was in the " high risk group. When it was recommended that CI users get the meningitis vaccine-- My PCP and I checked out the guidelines on the FDA website about how long the booster shot should be given after the original shot. Since by then it had been 8 years ; it was decided to go ahead to get the shot to be on the safe side. I got the booster between surgeries. Snoopy Re:Meningitis Article Sent By Dixie said - " But I checked it out, too. What the Dr. today did say is you MUST get a pneumonia shot every year. Which I do anyway. No sense in risking your health. " Do people need a pneumonia shot every year in addition to a flu shot? Also, I'm not 60 - do I need to get a " booster' pneumax, or whatever it's called, on the fifth year from my first? I got one in 2002 but didnt have one for either my reimplant or my bilateral surgery in 2005. Thanks - Jackie
Guest guest
That's right, Connie, the positioner was suspected to play a large role in the increased numbers of meninigitis in CI wearers. Nevertheless, the recommendation for vaccination stands, positioner notwithstanding. Thanks! Guest guest
, I was told by 2 different sources that the pneumonia shot is good for 5 years. Even the nurse where I got my flu shot told me that. Happy Hearing! First he told me you don't get the first until you are 60. I mentioned being in a " high risk group " so I already had one. Oh, then you don't get the second until 65. I plan to check this out with my regular primary care guy. I was in for a same day appt, so you get whoever is on call. But I checked it out, too. Guest guest
I'm a little confused about all this discussion of pneumonia shots and meningitis shots since in medical terms they are called something else. Are all of you suggesting that we get a pneumonia shot and a meningitis shot if we have a CI. Thanks!!! Guest guest
I was confused by this when I got my CI. The pneumonia shot is the one to take and will take of Bactria meningitis which is a different from the Menignitis shot as I was told. > , > I was told by 2 different sources that the pneumonia shot is good for 5 years. > Even the nurse where I got my flu shot told me that. > Happy Hearing! > Carol > Boca Raton, FL > N24C 3G left ear -12/11/01 > N Freedom- right ear- implanted 3/01/06 activated 4/6/06 > > Re:Meningitis Article Sent By Dixie > > Because I was at the Dr for something else today, I asked how often you > had to get a Pneumovax shot. Guest guest
Ruth, We do not have a walk across the street with lights in our community but we have to watch out for the car before go cross. But sometimes I do get scared when I go into parking lot. Yesterday when my head went down when dr told me to do something and then felt like something with straight like static or shock or like computer hook up but it might was about sinus or allergy but it appeared again other day few days before seen allergy dr and after seen dentist few times. But also I been had two allergy testings yesterday and will have more other allergy test next again in two weeks. But now I started keep track and record like about straight line like funny thing, dentist and allergy dr and trouble with allergy or sinus or cold lately and problem with hearing this time, and everything but it just started after cold or dentist when it became problem so now I already started keep track and write down everything. So i have go back to see specialist allergy doctor few more times now. Then I have go back for Cochlear implant check up in March. Guest guest
Ruth, Here again, I asked mother again if I had it before and she said no i had not had it before then I asked her if anyone know about me yet and she told my audologist about it so she know but plus ENT dr has not know yet. So this time we are letting them decide about it and also we knew it was recommendation to do this. I do not know when I will see ENT dr again but it will be sometimes not sure yet. But I am sure they will find out about what is going on with allergy dr and everthing since I did not know something so they may decide but we will not be surprised at this time. Like yesterday it was new to me and my mother and we did not know about types of bugs and bees allergy and other new thing that can find about these reactions from me on itself. Even not know about notice in food either but I only know about the drink issues. If it does happen discover then it would be new to us about food too. I am new at this allergy testings but it was not same as before about tests and other thing with different allergy doctors. So now it is new to me and my mother about things. So it is new to us about something. Even I never know what I am into something. But I am sure my audologist will find out when I see her again and they may decide about something sometimes soon. Plus in few months dentist said I may have to have nightguard but it will be made from dentist. So it is new to me too. Guest guest
Which is precisely why WE are our OWN best person to know about our health care. I've told Drs more than once what they should do, because they were not aware of it. Do they get mad? Yes. Do I care? No. Because in the final analysis, they have many patients, I have only one body. I've seen Drs prescribe antibiotics for people who are allergic to them. My father, for instance. When he brought home an expensive Rx that was a penicillin derivative, I called the pharmacy and asked if someone allergic to penicillin could take it. Absolutely not. I called the Dr and asked if he was aware that my father was allergic to penicillin. Well of course. Then WHY did he prescribe...etc. And I deducted the cost of the Rx from what we paid the Dr. So, be the actual person who knows the most about your own health and welfare. Ask questions, and don't leave until you understand the answers. If they get mad, switch doctors. I'm not joking about this. It is your LIFE in their hands, and some are very cavalier in their attitudes. Fri Feb 2, 2007 6:54 pm (PST) Thanks for sharing that, . Deb
Guest guest
Hi Jackie, Since I got the information from the resident who saw me on a same day visit rather than my regular PCP who is an instructor at the Center for Family Medicine, I tend to take it with a grain of salt. I believe it was a FLU shot that he said, but I was thinking Pneumovax and wrote pneumonia. The resident did say that if I received my first pneumovax prior to age 60, then I don't get the 2nd until age 65 - NOT 5 years after I got the first. The CDC info that I looked up yesterday just said one pneumovax was sufficient. But might be best to check with your primary care person, and see what she or he has to say. I am in a high risk group being diabetic, so flu shots are a must every year. Sorry I got the wrong and said pneumonia shots. Blonde is my excuse, what's yours? Thanks, Posted by: " Flashwun@...
