Guest guest
, Does the cochlear implant enable you to feel more confident when walking outside and such since you now hear more environmental sounds? Do you have a guide dog? It must have been difficult during those years that you were fully deaf and fully blind. Did you learn tactile sign language or did you use someother way to communicate with others? I'm glad the CI has helped. I have heard that some people need up to 2 years before getting decent speech comprehension results especially if they have not heard speech in a long time. in SC, hopeful CI candidate
Guest guest
: I'm disabled so can't walk/use a dog. But when someone takes me out, it's nice to be aware of souns .. although moving air can be a real problem. Supermarkets are very hard, for example. I use tactile fingerspelling or print on palm. I speak fairly well.
Guest guest
-- Have you done any auditory rehab or listening to talking books or any of the listening sites that we have on the website. They could help with your speech apprehension. Snoopy--
Guest guest
Howie, Welcome back. You have come a long ways, and tho it may seem yet longer to achieving speech comprehension, just look at the progress already made. Have you tried audio books, as Snoopy suggests? *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* A pessimist thinks everybody is as nasty as himself, and hates them for it. -- Bernard Shaw & Dreamer Doll (Guide Dawggie) Newport, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rclark0276@... http://webpages.charter.net/dog_guide/ NEW Home Page! Guest guest
, Oh, I didn't realize you were disabled. Sounds like you manage pretty well then considering the challenges you face. I would imagine supermarkets and such stores would be very loud. I am a bit worried about how I will cope with all the noises there because they have been pretty quiet places to me for some time now. in SC
Guest guest
Well I'm not registered for talking books for the blind. Actually that's probably too advanced for me. If soomeone on this list has the ability to record and save their speech as MP3 format short phrases, that might help better. The listening websites often require a player I don't use and they serve more as a test, not a practice setting.
Guest guest
: that will probably depend in part how long ago youu lost hearing. From what I've read, the sooner one gets implanted after hearing is gone, the better.
Guest guest
-- I am prelingually deafened meaning that I was born with a severe to profound hearing loss and I got first implanted 37.5 years after the diagnosis . I got speech comprehension soon after I got hooked up. Not perfect but it was there. Snoopy bilateral CIs
Guest guest
, You are right. I am hoping to get approved and then implanted soon. I just lost my residual hearing right after Christmas because I know that makes a difference in the success rate. in SC, hopeful CI candidate

Guest guest
Howie, Get children's books in audio and play them on the computer. Audio books generally have very clear narration and uf you were to play it over and over, in time, it should start kicking in. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Give your child mental blocks for Christmas. & Dreamer Doll (Guide Dawggie) Newport, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rclark0276@... http://webpages.charter.net/dog_guide/ NEW Home Page! Guest guest
and others: Can anyone recommend a specific audio CD of a children's book and where to get it?
Guest guest
Hi , This isn't a CD, but it's a story online that I listened to over and over again when I was first hooked up, by connecting earphones to my laptop. It's a children's story, very simple words, called 'Faithful '. Maybe you'll like it. http://www.faithfuljohn.com/en/main Binns ----Original Message Follows---- From: <hmil@...> Reply- Subject: Re: Hearing with my CI Date: Tue, 07 Feb 2006 15:29:25 -0500 and others: Can anyone recommend a specific audio CD of a children's book and where to get it? Guest guest
Public libaries have many children's stories on tape or CDs. The easier ones would be in the children's section of the library. I used to get those for my hearing daughter when she was younger. I plan to use those when and if I get my CI as I'm very familiar with many of the stories since I used to read them again and again to my students and then to my daughter. in SC
Guest guest
The echo effect with some high and low tones can mean you need to have your MAP tweaked a bit. In my case, it has meant turning off the highest channel of my CI. Nan Rosen _www.rosetwig.com_ (http://www.rosetwig.com/)
Guest guest
The rep from Cochlear at my last map told me, " your hearing abilities look good when tested in the booth. Your ability to hear sounds falls within the range of normal to a mild hearing loss. This is excellent for a Cochlear Implant user. With this information, we can be assured that the Map that you are currently using is appropriate. " When I hear sounds, there seems to be more than just the softness and loudness. There are patterns of bright and dark that vary from fuzzy/blurred to clear. Does that make sense to anyone?

Guest guest
, Yes it does. I experience the same thing. For example, when I hear very high or very low pitched voices, there is an overlapping " echo " voice that accompanies what I hear. Some frequencies are louder and clearer than others which is something that is obvious to me when listening to music. When I stopped using a HA in my right ear, I began to notice differences in certain frequencies that I did not notice before when using my CI and HA together. That being said, I am also noticing a gradual change in the echo voice beginning to be less noticeable when I pass less attention to it. My hearing history is very different from yours, but I can relate to hearing some frequencies stronger/clearer than others. For me, extreme high and low frequencies have a slight echo voice while low, middle and high frequencies do not. Guest guest
Well, I did some practice with a volunteer today. I am still very much " speech challenged " and the noise level here in the group home wasn't helping. But I understood some of the words we tried. I heard what she said was an airplane and a car start up. Sometimes I wonder if I confuse firings of my optic nerve for aspects of sound. And despite being told how good my hearing range is, I feel bewildered by the nature of sound and how it changes. There's a constant change of sound here, the processor sweeps from dark to light, or mixes things. It's even more obvious with music. Guest guest
I am not sure if I have any echo issues. The lower notes/frequences seem to have " darker " shades, and when things go higher, there's a brightening effect. I wonder if that effect happens with normal hearing? Guest guest
Nan, Thanks for your reply. When I see my audi on March 1st, I'll ask her if she can do some tweaking to my current map. The way I understood it though was that the echo voice would gradually disappear with increased listening practice and/or following a year's worth of CI use. Although the echo voice I hear isn't very loud, it is noticeable enough that I can tell it's there. One of the other ways I know I'm due for a new map is when middle and low frequencies become garbled or distorted. I believe I mentioned the echo voice to my audi before. At that time she mentioned that some changes could be made in my map to help improve the sound, but that the echo characteristic would eventually disappear over time and with increased listening practice. Guest guest
Hi , I was amazed at grocery stores, how loud they are. I didn't even realize that my usual grocery store played music. The first time I was in the store, after my activation, there was a man hammering, way on the other side of the store. I heard him all over the store. Before, Iwouldn't have even known he was there.
