A Universal Connector Standard for ALDs

Hi all! Endlessly over the years, I have been writing and fielding

questions on connectivity issues in ALDs - in particular tonight the enigma

of the 3.5mm mono vs the 3.5mm stereo plugs and jacks, Nightmare a better

word!

This applies to HA and CI folk equally.

Today, one must determine the jack on the source device (boombox, etc) and

make sure it matches that of the load device ( neckloop, DAI cord,

headphones,,)

A daunting challenge in many cases! Beacuse you JUST DON " T KNOW!

Because, there is NO industry standard! For example, the popular

PockeTalker has a mono jack. Incompatible with any stereo plug, such as the

family headphones. But other ALDs come with stereo!

Oy veh!

And the ubiquitous mono silhouettes and neckloops incompatible with the

boombox, etc as well.

The solution is simple, and should be adopted by all ALD makers:

*ALL source devices be equipped with a stereo jack. Mono devices wired with

tip and ring tied.

*ALL load devices be equipped with a stereo plug. Mono devices wired to tip

and ring.

That's it folks, short, sweet and simple!

A universal interface, user friendly and assuring happy results on the

first plug-in!

The trick is to make it happen!

Bob can you explain what you mean by these for a audio challenged person.

ALL source devices be equipped with a stereo jack. Mono devices wired with

tip and ring tied.

*ALL load devices be equipped with a stereo plug. Mono devices wired to tip

and ring.

Not a problem, Connie! Tip, ring and sleeve are the terms used to describe

the 3 parts of a stereo or 2 circuit phone plug.

If you look at one, the tip is the part on the end, then the ring and then

the sleeve or shaft.

The tip carries the L channel, the ring the R channel in stereo

applications.

In mono applicatiions, the tip and ring wired together!

Here's a pretty good A to Z on phone plugs and compatability issues:
