Guest guest
It may be that your son's audie mapped him very conservatively so that there was very little for him to react negatively to. This is a god question to ask your audie. Get all the information you can every time you go. n a message dated 10/23/2006 10:30:23 PM Eastern Standard Time, wvepperson@... writes: Need some advice from experienced CI users. Guest guest
Hi Everett and congratulations on your son's activation! When my daughter was activated almost a year ago, she didn't have a " profound " reaction either. She was only 2-1/2 at the time, but since she had been hearing all along with her hearing aids, and since our teams starts out very conservatively, she didn't seem to notice a difference at first. She did throw a livid fit when she " went live " and that was very frustrating, but by day three after activation, she was back to her normal self and wore her CI during all waking hours. We started seeing results I would say within a couple of weeks. Again, nothing profound, but small signs every day. The best advice I can give you is to ask a lot of questions of your audie and give it time. When do return for another mapping? I predict that after the next mapping, you too will start to see some subtle differences that seem huge to you too! Good luck and keep us posted! Guest guest
Everett I am a post lingual deafened adult and my activation was such that I hear and understood voices immediately. Having said that I believe from what other people have told me that audiologist are very conservative when mapping children and that children often don't have the immediate results some adults have because of this conservative mapping. When you go to see you son's audie laster this month ask her if she is mapping him very conservatively. Guest guest
The same thing happened when my son (was 2, now 3.5) was switched-on, although he became more used to the CI over time and was a little unsettled initially - I like you was expecting him to jump out of his skin but I was assured that responses vary. Anyway he's fine today and loving all the benefits (as are we)! JM (London)
Guest guest
Hi Everett, Wondering if I could ask you a few Questions? I also have a son that is 8 years old and has worn hearing aids since age1. He did great with them, so has very good speach. but his hearing has dropped in the left ear and we took him for testing and he is a candidate for a CI. Did your son hear with aids? And how was his speech? We have been told that a CI would really benifit him. And he wants so much to be able to hear the other kids. Guest guest
Hi April and Everett, Did you know there is another group that is specifically for parents of children with cochlear implants? It is called cicircle andyou join the same way you joined this group. My son has two cochlear implants. He got his first at age 4 and second at age 8 (he will be 10 in January.) It's an absolutely miraculous technology that has opened up his world in ways I never imagined. (His speech is now very clear to the point some people don't believe he is deaf. Before the implant he had no consonants in his speech and could not understand spoken language. Now he doesn't even need to read lips.) Take care, Lydia > > Hi Everett, > Wondering if I could ask you a few Questions? I also have a son that is 8 years old > and has worn hearing aids since age1. Guest guest
Yes, my son wore aids. He had them since he was 2. During the months of June through August of this year, he suddenly lost most of his hearing going from moderate to profound. He has had his cochear on for 1 day and is now starting to recognize his name again; and one of the most important words, " stop. " I will keep you updated... Guest guest
Ou 4 yr old son was activated Sept 11th and it was hard to tell when he was hearing till we realized that he would act silly/hyper whenever he heard the sounds. He didn't respond to sounds till the next mapping which was a week later and that's when he noticed some. It got better with each mapping we went to. He is now doing real god at attending to sounds and is even able to repeat some sounds without even looking at us and us even trying. We went to get his pic taken and he heard and repeated the raspberry & 'booboo' sounds the photogragher was making. Another time during therapy, he actualy said the 'oh' sound whereas he always had difficulty doing with his hearing aid. the teacher had tried with him facing her but he couldn't do it and then she did it behind him by the microphone and he did it. It was awesome. Give it time and more mappings. Sheree > > It may be that your son's audie mapped him very conservatively so that there > was very little for him to react negatively to.
