Can you explain the storyline to me? What happened? I got bored and turned

off the show after 15 minutes. Guess I'm not much of a CSI fan! LOL!

Left ear - Nucleus 24 Contour Advance with Freedom BTE

Even so, the whole thing was pretty interesting. I've never watch CSI

before but thought the hearing loss situation was presented realistically.

To me the best part was Marlee Matlin (I LOVE her) grabbing the perpetrator's

CI from his head causing his whole hearing world to disappear.

For sure the story emphasized the eternal conflict for the DEAF, to have

a CI or to not have a CI. That is a question that rages today.

I will be interested in what others have to say.

I found this episode kind of confusing.

Mom, Dad and daughter deaf.

Mom claim to be the Mom of baby, but in the end baby belong to Mom's daughter.

Now according to the killer is wearing a CI. Amazing, he could not hear

what the detective was trying to tell him while the Mom now Grandma in the front

seat total deaf was able to read the detective's lips from the front seat to

relay the message to I presumed the real father of the baby.

I find it hard to believed anyone can read lips at that distance, at night time

yet, under dim light street lamp.

Or is that possible?

Dolly Dolphin will have to see this episode again when it come back as a

repeat

Well Marlee Matlin can read lips from a mile away LOL

I've been known to understand some lip reading from a

fair distance--but I know what you mean.

My concern was the way making the choice to get a CI

was portrayed. Although I do appreciate the validity

of some of the arguments made within the Deaf

community against it.

This was interesting as i noticed it was different because to me its very hard

to read lips in dark unless i have plenty of light. Marilee Matlin (Mom) should

not have (in my opinion) been able to read lips but yet the light shone enough

for her. The Baby's father was Cole (the CI recipient). Cole even hurt his

ex-girlfriend 's father. He ended up being arrested on several charges

but yet he was able to hear it when he got his CI Processor back.

That makes a lot of difference to me as a recipient as well. Its interesting

that Cochlear Implants go far beyond Hearing Aids to help several, if not, all

deaf/hard of hearing hear much better and be able to socialize in the real world

much more than they would with just HAs and sign language. The opportunity is a

vast change of life and makes people feel soo much happier being in the real

world.

What did all of you think of the way the CI was

protrayed? I think they could have done it much

better and then they called the processor a

transmitter and I don't think that is accurate. I am

going to send an email to the show.

I think it would have been nice if they had done a

little public service info explaining that it wasn't

just for the totally deaf.

I will add to my earlier comment I agree that I think

they messed up on the lip reading. She couldn't

understand the detectives earlier in the show and then

all of a sudden she knew what the killer was saying in

the back seat while she was driving and could read the

lips of the detective from far away.

I think they need all of us as helpers on the show.

I agree, calling the speech processor a...transmitter I think...was kind of

silly. I suppose they figured most people think they understand what a

transmitter is, so they said that. Whatever.

The issue I had was with presenting the choice of the adult (the killer) to

get a CI to be a result not of wanting to hear more but of wanting to be seen as

" normal " in his parents eyes.

I know this can happen, and I know there are deaf and hoh who are made to feel

like oddballs by their families. Still, for those who were learning about it for

the first time, all they saw was a family of (presumably) born deaf people

addressing the issues within the Deaf community about Deaf culture, what is

" normal " , etc. Of course added to this was this guy who supposedly only got a CI

to be considered normal by his family is now so angry regarding the situation

with his deaf child that he ends up almost kidnapping her and inadvertently

killing the mother of his child. Lovely PR, eh?
