Guest guest
How many of us have noticed that they can hear better on their cell phone than their land line phone? Well, I'll be darned! I thought it was just me. I hear much better on my cell phone than on the land line, even with the land line cranked up to full amplification. Also, one of our sons is a pilot. I fly with him sometimes. I use a high quality noise-cancelling headphone, with a microphone up close to my lips. He does the same thing. We can converse in a normal tone of voice (volume), in the noisy cockpit of a small airplane. I don't have to be facing him to understand him and I think I probably hear 90% of what he says, the first time. It's SOOOO nice. It's the only situation in my elderly life that I can have a conversation with someone. WIsh the whole world could be put in my headphones. <sigh> Don C
Guest guest
Beth, You said " I know that both Advanced Bionics and Cochlear Americas warn against static and other difficulties when using a digital cell phone... I am confused. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Living your life is a task so difficult, it has never been attempted before. --Anonymous & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
Don, Tell us about that headset please. Do you patch it into your CI? Guest guest
Don, Tell us about that headset please. Do you patch it into your CI? Wups, I'm not YET a CI user. I have just begun the process of determining whether or not I qualify. The headset is a " Lightspeed " (brand) aviation headset. It works through the intercomm system on the airplane. Sometimes I use it leaving my hearing aids " in, " other times I remove them. It doesn't make any difference in how well I hear. Of course part of the reason communication is so clear and easy when using it, is that the person talking has the microphone right next to their lips and the mike is a highly directional mike. It does not pick up any sound that is not directly squarely into it. It just seems that using that kind of technology, audio engineers COULD perfect a hearing enhancement system that would be a compromise between conventional hearing aids and CI's, for people who are severely to profoundly aurally challenged. Perhaps wearing a headset all the time would be cosmetically unappealing to most people. At this point I think I'd wear a bucket over my head if it would enable me to hear and understand as well as I do when I'm out flying with my son. Happy & Prosperous New Year Wish to All Don C. Guest guest
Don, Hmmmm, ok. LOL Well I can think of applications where such a setup would be ideal as opposed to FM systems for the very reason you describe. The mic is right in front of the mouth enabling both people to hear the best. Question to All. Has anyone used such a setup? If so, tell us about it. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
Beth, In this case, I dont see static as an issue. Let me say that. LOL Static to me is not the same as interference. Its worse in winter and can be quite shocking. But interference comes from other sources such as tv radio etc. Which has not been a problem for me. I would love to get a cell phone and have one picked out. Its even blind friendly because the maker added speech to it so a blind person can actually set up the phone without outside help. It is also a flip model and I would find those so much better than the dinky things that are barely big enough to feel let alone use. If only my budget would let me..... *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Road sign seen on the island of Cyprus (translation from Greek): Caution: Road Slippery from Grape juice & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
Beth, You have the Nucleus 3G? If the room is looped you dont need captioning or FM system, just switch to t coil. It will work. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* (MORE OF AN AD THAN A SIGN, but...) A billboard seen next to the highway, travelling from Johannesburg International Airport into town. Guest guest
Beth, Thanks for the clarification! I agree -- in that kind of situation, it definitely would be alot harder to have people speak into an FM system. I wonder if you could plug an environmental microphone into your FM system receiver and then point it in the direction of the person you're speaking to? I've never tried using an FM system in a restaurant (I've used communication cards), so don't know how easy or difficult this may be. Just trying to offer a suggestion that may or may not help. Guest guest
Beth, Ok. Do you have the add on t coil? That would make it wireless when using a loop, neck loop or room loop. Sometimes we get loopy which is fine when it works. Guest guest
If you have a sensitivity map, turn down the sens and try the speakerphone. When I turn down my sens, the road noise fades away. It also makes it easier for me to listen to the radio when i keep the windows open. <<I've never tried the head set for cell phones. I did try the speaker phone function on my cell phone yesterday, and it works well when I'm in a quiet environment. There's too much background noise for the person on the other end if I try to use the speaker phone option while driving, and it's also harder for me to hear the speaker phone while driving. Dang road noise, anyway. LOL
