Guest guest
Hi, Day 3 of activation, I can understand some conversations, people sound like darth vader from star wars. My question is about how long does it take for the sounds to become more normal sounding? The audie told me tomorrow I need to switch to p2. I see her again Monday for follow up visit. Guest guest
Hi , I thought the three P's were: Practice Patience Perseverance Is Persistence the third one? Did someone also add a fourth " P " - Pray? Dolly Dolphin doing the patience part waiting for the word to come in for the evaluation
Guest guest
Hey guys, I thought the new P word was P wonderful interpretation of Perspective. It sure seems to fit with Practice, Patience and Perseverance. But Persistence isn't bad either. D
Guest guest
, I know what you mean about refrigerator noises and the like. What's driving me crazy is hearing my breath! Every exhale sounds so loud! Do people really hear their breaths with the CI? From: nucleus24@... Date: Sat, 10 Oct 2009 20:32:13 -0400 Subject: Re: First mapping Hi Maggie, Yes, maybe someone decided I'd suffered enough. LOL. The guy who drove me to my mapping appt thinks there are antennas on the moon that are sending us signals that affect our lives. What we put up with for a ride these days! Hearing more all the time, some of which I don't need to hear, like the washing machine filling with water. So removed the magnet, and apparently if the magnet is off for any length of time the implant turns itself off. Neat battery saving option. Also flashes lights to let you know it's working, its battery is low and so forth. Have to read the books and find out what all the crazy signals are. __________________________________________________________ Best Weight Loss Program - Click Here! http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2141/fc/BLSrjpTFoYe4E6Mk6H019j3RNAUbGqoR6ayF\ ZWvhsvYrX1C81mbx9HlKM9q/
Guest guest
Hi , Dont worry, its just the " Darth Vader " effect! We mostly all got it when newly switched on. Take my word, your brain will sort it out, and it just fades away. The more you get annoyed with it, the louder it sounds, try not to get obsessed with it. Guest guest
I heard myself breathing with my first implant. It was very distracting for the first couple months. I could hear my dangly earring swinging, too. It faded away, though.
Guest guest
Thanks, . Hearing that sound I felt like someone sinister was next to me, but it was really only myself! Guest guest
Anne, Oh, no, my earrings, too! As wrote, I wish there was a way to cut some sounds out. Just give me human speech and I'll be happy. :} Distant sounds of toilet flushing they can keep. LOL From: anne350831@... Guest guest
, Some people pay a LOT of money to hear others breathe loudly on the phone. Obscene phone calls and all that! LOL. Had a friend I'd call, and just breathe heavily, and they'd always say, " Oh, Hi, " You can hear your breath if you pay attention to it. Most people don't. Any sound you are not used to is going to sound loud. Flushing the toilet sounds like Niagara Falls. Your car will sound like it needs a tune up, and of course the fridge, washing machine, dishwasher and all that sound very loud. Much of this will fade with time and mappings. Much of it can be eliminated with the auto sensitivity program. But hearing people hear this all the time and learn to ignore it. So it's a brain function - what you need to pay attention to, and what you can ignore. Once you've identified the sound and realize it's something ignorable, then you can just ignore it. Easier said than done, but that is what babies learn when they learn to hear. Those of us who didn't have typical hearing as children have to learn it now. But even old brains can learn new tricks. I have never wasted batteries listening to lawn mowers, snow blowers and my sewing machine. Some sounds can not only be ignored, but totally eliminated by turning OFF the processor. It will get better. Best program for me has both auto sensitivity and ADRO on it. , I know what you mean about refrigerator noises and the like. What's driving me crazy is hearing my breath! Guest guest
Hi Folks, I just went for a long walk on the harbor and near the beach. It was beautiful, windy but the sun is out and this time I realized I wasn't hearing the waves on the ocean. I was close enough but they weren't really active today. I wish I could have seen it but I couldn't, it is a huge ship that holds over 4,000 people with an additional 1,000 staff, it was right here in the harbor and huge. I am in hopes that someday when I do that walk I will hear the water moving ieven if it isn't active. I like the sounds of the horn on many of the boats, the choo of the tourist train on the promenadand all the other sounds I have never heard. I think that if some of the household noises bother me I should just button up and go for a walk on the harbor and rememver how much I never heard and how beautiful the noises are now. I'm hoping I will be hearing this by spring. Am I rushing it? I don't know but I can hardly wait. So far, I haven't heard any negative thoughts on this new way of life. Is there any? I'm not looking for trouble or wanting horror stories but isn't there a sad story somewhere? Just being realistic. . . Patty
Guest guest
Sounds like you had a beautiful day, Patti. You've made us all wish we'd been there with you. Yes, there is a downside to this new way of life with a CI. You have to take the processor off at night to give your skin time to breath. So you're deaf again! That's the least of it. Guest guest
Downside to a CI? Hmmm, well, I can only think of one thing that is specific to me because of the type of hearing loss I had in my implant ear. I never was able to wear a HA in that ear since childhood, so it wasn't stimulated except for the low frequency sounds it could barely hear. So with the CI, while I do understand speech, the sounds are still a little distorted, sort of like a reverberation to each word..not like an echo, but like you are hearing someone talking in a barrel. I suspect that this sound is due to the auditory nerve damage I sustained from not wearing a HA all my life in that ear (but couldn't due to recruitment and distortion). I still have hopes that we can find a way to map this out, or my ear finally sorts this out and eliminates it somehow. But do I regret the surgery? Absolutely NOT!! I love bilateral hearing with my HA and CI. It isn't perfect hearing, but it is better by leaps and bounds from what I had BCI. If you have recent auditory memory of all your favorite sounds, you will be hearing them in no time. So much to look forward to Patty!! Best of luck! ________________________________ From: P Sarchi <psarchi@...> Sent: Mon, October 12, 2009 3:10:42 PM Subject: RE: Re: noises Hi Folks, I just went for a long walk on the harbor and near the beach. Guest guest
Thanks, I wish I had you all with me too. . .That's OK I still want to sleep. . Funny, but when I get up in the night and the house is pitch dark I don't hear BUT, I see things in place that I don't see in the daytime. It is strange but I don't make anything of it. I have had to take my hearing aids off at night all these years so I don't think it will be much different to take the processor off too.
