Guest guest
Sharon, What a truly wonderful post I am so happy for you and grateful you shared that with us all. I live beside the ocean and have a cottage right on the shore so I kind of took the sound of the ocean for granted until it was gone. I did not really notice it much last summer with activation in July I did not really start to concentrate on that kind of thing at the time. This year the first morning at the cottage I woke up and went outside the very first thing I noticed was the sound of the waves on the shore - it was so wonderful to hear that again. I am off to the cottage again in 2 weeks and looking forward to another Ear Full of ocean sounds ;-)) Regards, Mike " Ears Hopin " P Nucleus Freedom > > Hi everyone, > > Just wanted to let everyone know I finally heard the ocean with my cochlear implants (CI)! What an experience! We arrived early Saturday morning (June 10th) in Myrtle Beach at daylight just before the sun was up. The waves seemed very loud, louder than I remembered but it was also a clearer sound. I was really surprised just how loud they were. I know my eyes got big as saucers and my mouth dropped open. Alberto (coming storm) was causing the waves to be higher than normal. I heard my kids shouting and laughing as they ran in the waves, clothes and all. > > Early each morning (and every chance I got) I was on the beach walking, relaxing, and listening to the sounds of nature and people when it wasn't raining. Sometimes Mom would meet me on the way back from those early morning walks and we would talk and pick up shells. Strangers would speak to me and it makes me wonder how many times in the past I walked on by because I didn't hear them speak. I enjoyed being with my hearing sister and her family and feeling at peace and not left out of what they were saying. > > Each time I went swimming I had to pull my processors off. When I could see the waves coming I thought I could hear them, just like before CI. While playing with the kids and my back turned to the waves, they would catch me unguarded unless one of the kids warned me a wave was coming by pointing behind me. We had a time of our lives. I felt like a kid again. Those seven days just flew by too fast. I'm ready to go again. > > One thing I wanted to share is the feeling I had when my processors were off. The thought was never far from my mind that when my hair was dry I would be able to hear again. I didn't feel the depression I used to feel before I had surgery although I am 100% deaf without my CI's. We played for hours in the ocean and not one single sad thought about returning home to a hearing world without sound. It's a new experience for me. These CI's are like a security blanket to me. It's hard to explain but they sure made a world of difference. > > Thanks Sis, for making this vacation possible and a memorial one. > > Sharon Myers > Bilateral CI Surgery 12-09-02 > Bilateral CI Hookup 1-09-03 > > __________________________________________________ >

Guest guest
Hello Sharon I'm not sure which kind of C.I. you have. Which programme were you using when you walked on the beach and were able to hear and talk with the noise of the ocean as a background? Guest guest
Ted, I have bilateral N24C 3G. The first thing I did was turn the sensitivity down low but I'm not sure if I used mic or whisper. I have this habit of turning switches until I get the best sound in any situation where it is loud. I know I've had one CI on whisper and the other on Mic before. Sharon Posted by: " Ted F. Guest guest
Thanks, Sharon. I was impressed that you were able to hear and talk on the beach. I havent been there yet since my C.I. activation, but my experiences with hearing aids were hopeless. The ocean is very noisy. Guest guest
Sharon, how I envy you being able to listen to and see the ocean. Your wonderful description helped me feel as I were there.
Guest guest
Ted, My experience with the HAs was hopeless, too. I remember the last time (about 5 or 6 years ago) I went to the ocean I told my twin she had to sign for me because I was lost. I felt so left out and couldn't follow what was being said. She said she couldn't but she did try by signing the subject and enough so I would know what they were talking about. That was the beginning of us using sign language more with each other so something good came out of it. Just a few years later she started depending on sign language. After I was hooked up a few months I started interpreting for her the best I could. We've come full circle. She now has a CI but she's having problems at work. I went to her work place and the things that's extra loud to her is not that loud to me. She knows one day she will be able to wear her CI at work and be more comfortable. She's so impatient but it's time she needs, just I did. Sorry about going down memory lane. Hope your experience at the ocean is good and be sure to post if you go. Good luck.
