Wow, that is cool that he's wearing a microphone. At least you are sure it's really him, you're talking to.

hi michelle -

i was doing gilads new tv show (well it has been on fit-tv for almost a

year now) called 'total body sculpt'. there are 30 min and 60 min

episodes of TBS on fit-tv now. 'bodies in motion' is a fun show, but now

with TBS, i find that BiM is quite out of date and is easier to do.

gilad says that he is going to make TBS-like dvds in the near future. so

he has a few projects on the go right now, including an

expansion/progression pack to his 'quick fit system'.

do you attend gilad's monthly chats? they are the best on the

no clumsy typing. the responses and comments are fast and he can answer

every single question. it is so nice to hear his voice. and you know for

Hi Carolyn,

I ordered his Quick Fix system, do you know if the workouts are all older ones repackaged? I doesn't matter since I don't have any of his anymore, I'm just curious.

Dear ,

First of all, I would like to thank you and the other members very much for

the warm welcoming. It means so much for me in these times before the

performance of the surgery.

I am currently only at the beginning of the process as I became a candidate

only last week. I have another appointment this week and a CT scan in the near

future. From the information I have already acquired at the appointment I had

last week, the hospital where I plan to undergo the surgery does implant all the

3 brands of the CIs. I have yet a lot to review before I start sking the

questions and I will definitely review the website you have sent me.

However, being a medical student also imposes another hardship in my way as I

need to find out if the different CIs have a possibility to work with a

stethoscope and how they do that. I hope everything will be cleared in the near

future.

I have a profound hearing loss of approximately 90-100 db. It has remained at

the same level since I was born (the reason for my hearing loss is Rubella

during the pregnancy of my biological mother). However, I rely almost completely

on lipreading and cannot understand speech using hearing aids. Hearing provides

additional cues for understanding, but I can't use it solely. I hope the CI will

change this.

Again, I thank you all very much for the warm welcoming into the group and

hope to get to know you better as the process continues. I wish you a wonderful

Christmas holiday and all the best for the New Year 2006. For the members who

plan to implant this week or in the course of the year 2006, I wish all the good

luck possible for the surgery to succeed. All the best!

Sincerely yours, Gilad

Subject: New CI Candidate

Hello everyone,

my name is Gilad and I have just joined the -group.

I am a 22-year-old student of medicine (3rd year out of 7) at the

Tel Aviv University. I suffer from a profound congenital bilateral

sensorineural hearing loss, though it is not genetic.

I became a CI Candidate last Wednesday after having heard about

the tremendous advancements in the field in the AMPHL (Association

for Medical Professionals with Hearing Loss) conference I attended

in Washington DC last September. Up till now I was quite concerned

whether or not I am taking the right step in choosing the cochlear

implant.

However, since I became a candidate this concern has almost

completely been wiped away as I begin to deal with new decisions,

such as which implant I should choose. It's all very new for me and

I find these small (comparing to the decision to undergo the

surgery), but important, decisions quite difficult to make. I hope

to be able to find some answers in this group as well as in other

websites and one day be in the position to assist others in this

hard, yet very important, path.

Before I finish, I would like to take advantage of this

opportunity to wish all the members Merry Christmas and a happy New

Year 2006! May this be a wonderful year for all of us, filled with

love, happiness, health and success by all means.

Sincerely yours, Gilad

Gilad,

Welcome to the forum. I am 44 now. I got implanted with the Esprit

N24CR implant from Cochleas Americas last October, and got activated

in December. My parents were there for the activation. (Not a dry

eye in the audiologist's room!)

I was born profoundly deaf, and have been working as a dentist for 15

years. I had zero speech comprehension with hearing aids at 90-100 dB

loss with only low frequencies -- and I was battling skin infections

and feedback with analog and frequency transposition hearing aids (AVR

Sonovation ImpaCt aids made in Israel!) -- and I had been sitting on

the fence on cochlear implants for 10 years until I got sufficiently

frustrated with just wearing one hearing aid in one year every

alternate month... no telephone use at all. Depended solely on using

the TDD and relay services.

I came in with " high hopes and no expecations " as everyone will

undoubtedly tell you. In one year, I can't believe the difference! I

can hear at an even 35 dB across the board now and I can hear all

different bird calls, environmental noises, etc.

Second last CI moment was the low-battery-alarm of the CO detector in

the attic -- I could hear it from the first floor and I had to track

down the source of the noise when I had no electricity in the house

for several hours (the battery kicked in and when it was running out,

it set off the beep beep beep of the CO detector)...

And just last week, the latest CI moment for me: my dental assistant

asked me through her face mask: " do you need more amalgam filling? " as

I was busy finishing off a tooth cavity preparation and filling, with

my eyes on the patient's tooth. I replied " no thank you, I'm all

set " -- without even anticipating it or thinking about it! So you can

see, that it improves with time and practice.

Today was my first VCO phone call home to my parents! I could talk on

the phone with my mom and dad, using a video phone (and following the

sign language interpreter on the TV) in real time, without having to

wait for the " GA " . I am so blessed, and so pleased with my

progress... my parents won't have to type on their TDD anymore, and we

can talk in " real time. " A confidence booster!

Next week I start my first auditory therapy appointment. I'm excited.

I wanted to wait till I had the perfect MAPping, and sufficiently

aware of all environmental sounds across all frequencies... which

finally arrived about ten months post activation. Remember, everyone

on these forums have their own learning curves, their learning styles,

paces. So, Gilad, just be aware that you only follow the beat of

*your own drummer* and not others'.

Good luck on your journey. I'm excited for you!

Hi Gilad,

As Mike mentioned, it's up to the surgeons, audiologists and patient

as to when they get their implant mapped. Any surgery will cause

swelling, and if the swelling hasn't subsided, you will need a stronger

magnet to keep the implant processor in place. I know when I was

implanted 8 years ago, I wasn't even supposed to wash my hair for 10 days

post surgery. I told the Dr. that would not do, seeing as it was August.

But the reason for that was to prevent pseudomonas infection. He

explained that it was very hard to get rid of, and since water isn't

sterile, you don't want any water getting anywhere near your incision. I

did correspond with someone who got a pseudomonas infection, and was on 3

different kinds of antibiotics for months to try to get rid of it. One

was intravenous, 2 oral. Still, she had to be explanted, wait a few

months and then get reimplanted. So lots of grief with an infection like

that.

The Nucleus implanted part is thinner than others, I think, so

requires less drilling. I know the Med-el device has a ceramic casing

and requires more drilling into the mastoid area to seat the implant.

But they are doing lots smaller incisions than when I was implanted.

The Original

,

I'm sorry for the question, but what is the difference of

post-operative activation for Freedom implantees as compared to HiRes

implantees? Is the healing time longer?

Hi ,

Thank you very much for the information. It is very interesting to read about

it. As for me, I am intending to shave the entire hair on my head the day before

the surgery. I decide that it would be nice to try that upon this occasion, so I

guess I won't need to wash my head for 10 days. Thank you very much for the

information as I know now that I shouldn't wash my head even if I shaved it.

As for the activation, I read many messages in the forums, one of them was

founded by my surgeon. He wrote there that no research had established that one

has to wait 4 weeks for the activation. He claims that one can be activated

after full recovery, which usually takes 10 days to 2 weeks. That's why I would

like to be activated after 2 weeks and not four. I hope I will be able to ask

the implantation center to do so.

Thanks again for the information. Have a nice relaxing weekend.

Yours, Gilad

Hi, Gilad,

Hope all goes well with your surgery. I've had it three times and lived

to tell about it! (Haha) You'll have a headache and some soreness, but it

won't be long before you are ready to be activated. All the very best and keep

Hi, Gilad,

It's good to see you posting again. I'm sorry you are so tired, but

yes, it's a common side affect of any surgery. I found that my first two

surgeries it only lasted about a week. With my last surgery in Sept. the

tiredness

lasted a few months. I'm still having some residual affects, in fact.

Your attitude for your coming activation is perfect. Figure you won't

like it initially, and gradually it will get better and you'll wonder how you

heard without it.

Saying a prayer that all continues to go well! (Shehechianu....)
