Oh! Your audie is a horror and you can tell her I said so! How dare she

speak to you in that way??

On the flip side, there are things that we can do to help ourselves get the

best mapping possible. For example, we can keep a diary of what we hear and

how it sounds to us. We can listen to someone read and note which sounds are

muffled, too high pitched, absent, etc. I'm not saying that you haven't done

your best but in the end it is really up to us to advocate for ourselves. In my

opinion, based on what you said you've experienced, i would get another audie

ASAP. Don't give it a second thought.

I too have the Freedom and was implanted in October 2005 and activated

November 1, 2005 and I am doing very well. My audie is very experienced in CI

and I feel that she is large part of my success. Does you audie have alot of

experience programming CIs?

Bottom line I believe is that the audie is the most important person in this

CI process (other than the implantee) and if you have any doubts about your

audie find a new one. If I were in your shoes I would be running to Texas or

wherever as fast as my legs could carry me. Any audie who say you continue to

come in complaining and says they have tried all the maps (I thought there were

an infinite number of maps so you must have been there forever -- being

sarcastic) in my book should be fired. Get a new audie and complain louder than

ever to the doctor in charge of the clinic she works for.

and she would be giving a seminar for Advanced Bionics, I'm not

interested in brands, just how I can benefit the best from my

implant. Thus, the questions. Should I ask for another audi in

the same clinic or should I try Texas, Houston is the same

distant for me? I am late and very suddenly deafened and the fact

I could understand speech discrimination immediately seems to

make my audi think I shouldn't COMPLAIN as she puts it. But I

work in a noisy environment and luckily I have been at the same

job as Office Manager for 17 years or I would have lost it when I

lost my hearing as I still can't manage the phone well. Please I

need everyones input. Am I being petty? Should I just settle and

struggle? Am I asking too much or the impossible? Please help.

Hello Debbie

What I picked up from your message, is that your audi was going to

give a talk at an AB seminar. This led me to believe that she may not

be very experienced in mapping the new Freedom. Personally, I would

change my audiologist. Being late deafened, its my opinion that you

should be getting very good results by now, with your implant. I

would also demand that the implant be sent back to Cochlear for

testing, to find out what that motor running sound is. They should be

able to loan you a processor as your Freedom will still be under

warranty. Good luck. Keep us posted on what happens, please.

Debbie,

Professional audies should not be making you feel guilty. They are there to

serve you and meet your needs.

Don't be scare to try different audie to see what happens if you have

problems experience with your present audie. If you ahead find and

search different location for different audie but one thing there

might be no transfering history files. But if you go try different

then you might try to tell what is your present problems or

something. But one thing is not good thing not change or keep get

many different audie to try too much. I had experienced with

different four audies but two were quitted at a child hospital then I

tried adult hospital and not like audie two times but gave me really

loudest level not comfortable but even it was requried to had

interpter but did not work out as good instruction plus one time my

brother was there and he did not like it becuse of being yelled but

audie did not let me and him to be in room same time. We never go

back to adult hospital anymore and left anything. Then I had not go

for check up for few years then when I got first new job I started

searched for different location and different city in that state to

closer to me then I finally found one that was right ones to be match

to me what i needed to be even it is a combination for adult and

children at the clinic closer to the hospital areas. Then my brother

had not check up for 5 yrs and my audie really needed my brother and

he was scared to go to try new one but we had one friend who went

same day as him and I was with them in same room but my audie let us

be together in room with audie at same time. But my experiences is

really worst than his. Even I been through with my jobs issues

problems too so it was messed by own myself before. But now i am

working with audie about other issues. Even soon I have to see

psychology for my hearing issues that I been go through for many

years. But now I am normal. My and his audie been worked hard to

find and figured out what been go on with me and his. Even she got

rep to helped us even it been take long time to figure out and try

other things with any steps. But my ear ent dr and audie is still

research on something on me. I knew my brother and I did not like to

change or had different audies at all. But only my and his audie

knows that we don't want to change anymore and want to keep my audie

that what we have now. But even it was no history of records or files

from long many yrs before so we have to learn many things and figured

out everything on our and audie own. Even she got me to learn work

through problems to tell her everything. But even it is really

difficult to change or get differnet audies if have no history of

records or files before also. But I am still doing my dairy

experiences that is my job to do this time that what my audie told me

to do so we are keep tracking on everything that I am doing in my

journal. But remember it might or can take you and someone find out

or figure out about anything or problems but you might want to tell

someone about your current present problems or something. Colleen

I too have complained about lack of clearity from the beginning of my

implant...Oct. 05. I think the constant running of the motor can be reduced by

turning the sensitivity down, at least that worked for me. My constant

complaint

has b een that it sounds like someone is at the end of the tunnel and far

away, and I too want some answers. I can't hear clearly on the amplified

telephone, nor tv, nor movies, nor music....I too am late deafened and know that

this wonderful devise can work better if the right map is found.

Hi

I've been reading your post Debbie. It is a serious situation when

a professional person says that you are " COMPLAINING " . You have

every right to be there and to say how it is going with your

mapping, what you feel happy with and what you are not happy with

etc.

Especially with the brands and that which your audie talks about

which is weird....he/she shouldn't be mentioning that when you are

having your mapping sorted out. Maybe next time when you see this

audie to clarify what she meant by talking about the brands....you

may have got the wrong end of the stick or misinterpreted it or the

audie didn't say it clearly what he/she meant to say.

I advise you to speak to a manager there who is in charge of

audiologists or go to the reception and demand that you would like

to put in a complaint about an audiologist's behaviour. It is

unprofessional that they treat you like this.

It is important to get to the bottom of this issue as this

audiologist could be treating someone else the same as you and this

other CI users would feel just as helpless as you and wouldn't know

where to turn.

It is important to address this problem for your sake and for other

cochlear implant users.

Hi Ted, thanks for responding. It wasn't an AB Seminar it was an AG

Bell and I read

her name in the brochure. Their was all different topics on CI in which

you could attend.

I was in the audi's office the Mon before the seminar and she never

mentioned it. I was

so disappointed. I have had the motor running sound since day 1 and she

keeps adjusting

with no change. I have had a faulty processors replaced, but both

processors and every

map I have had has had this sound. It is not as bad in a quite room

but is still their the

minute I put it on.

This led me to believe that your audi was going to speak at an

Advanced Bionics sponsored seminar. This is why my thoughts were,

that your audi might not be very experienced in mapping the Freedom

which is still comparitively new.

The main consensus here, seems to be to change your audiologist. Its

very important IMO that the recipient and the audiologist have a good

working relationship, to be best able to obtain the results you

should be getting. Having had the Freedom for 10 months and having

been late deafened, its also my opinion that you should be doing

extremely well by now.

Its funny that when you had the Cochlear rep there while the mapping

was done, you had your best result. I know that the upheaval in New

Orleans would have disrupted everything and you probably missed out

on many mapping sessions in those early months. You deserve to get

the best out of your implant and its your audi's job to work with you

to achieve that. If she isnt prepared to do that, or persists with

her bad attitude, report her and then sack her.

Hi Debbie!

I see you got a lot of great feedback to your post. I hope you

do look for a new audie. You don't deserve to be told that you

are complaining. I believe that CI users can best help in the

mapping process by taking observations of what they like or don't

like about their programs. I always took 3 to 6 observations

about what I liked or didn't like about how I was hearing with each

program. This is in no way complaining. They are observations

to help my audie better map me. Heck, if it was complaining, I

would no longer have a youngest sister. I hated her voice in the

beginning of my CI journey! Her voice was one of my observations 3

months after hook up and when my dad and I described how high

pitched she was my audie made me a program rounding off the edges of

the highs and lows of my ACE 900 sensitivity map. I didn't even

have to bring her with me. I just had to make the observation

known. That mapping became my favorite program and that's when

speech discrimination started kicking in for me. I still use it 3

yrs later; only getting it tweaked once a year or so now. Now my

youngest sister's voice is the easiest for me to understand from

another room. Please hang in there. Surely, you have not yet been

exposed to the all the ways your processor can be mapped. I wish

you the best with what you decide regarding your audie. You

deserve to be treated better than how she has treating you.
