Guest guest Posted October 28, 2003 Report Share Posted October 28, 2003 Hi Adge-- My daughter had scoliosis surgery and to my amazement her kyphosis was fixed, as well. Many doctors had said it was not possible to do so (more than a decade ago), but her surgeon did it. I think it involves rotating the rib cage back into place once the spine is straightened? He wasn't very happy with it at all in the beginning and up until a few months ago, he was beginning to get used to the mapping he was on. The audiologist changed the mapping and now my dad is completely disappointed again and is relying more on his hearing aid. He doesn't really know how to use the computer, so I would like to find the correct information for him! Is this normal...have any of you had similar experiences? He is to the point where he wants to change audiologists. Did anyone do that? Can anyone help me??? I would love to hear all suggestions! Guest guest Posted July 6, 2006 Report Share Posted July 6, 2006 Your father can request to have his better, previous MAP put back on his processor as one program, along witht other MAPs put in the other program slots. If you print this out for your father, perhaps he can use this to better describe what the sounds are like to his audiologist. The audiologist can then adjust his map to make the sounds better. Guest guest Posted July 6, 2006 Report Share Posted July 6, 2006 Hi Cbarto! Welcome to the group! I see you got some advice already. I was wondering how many mapping appointments your dad has had since his hook up date. It sounds like he needs to go back for another mapping. And at that time the audie can put that last program back on his processor that he liked before and then change the other programs for him. It can take a lot of appointments to get that " ahhh this is a nice map! " I started out going for a mapping once a week then every two weeks then once a month until the third month of my hook up. Then for a year I went every 3 months before being switched to twice a year. It took me 3 months to get my favorite program and that was based on my youngest sister's voice. I couldn't stand her high pitched voice! So my audie rounded off the edges of the highs and lows from my ACE 900 program and I LOVED it! That's when speech discrimination started kicking in for me for the first time in my whole life. Just 3 days after that, I responded to my name being called just a few feet behind me. Imagine that, at the age of 40 I was jumping up and down because I responded to my name being called. What a day that was! Anyway, Between appointments I tried to take notes of what I knew I was not hearing or what didn't sound right and what I liked about the different programs. I always took 3-7 observations on each program to help my audie better map me next time. I feel those observations helped a lot especially when I noticed I couldn't stand my youngest sister's voice. Now hers is the easiest for me to understand from another room. Once speech disrimination started kicking in that's when I seriously started listening exercises with my family. My dad and nieces and nephews enjoyed playing categories with me or giving me spelling tests so I could practice listening. When we played Categories, my dad always made it the kitchen table because there are countless things on it for him to name and for me to repeat back. Through Categories, we discovered I was not hearing the letter " c " and so after my next mapping, I could then hear it. We also learned another time that I was not hearing the letter r and that too was fixed. I don't know if your dad needs to change audies. Only he can make that decision. I do know that he needs another mapping. Tell him not to give up. He is still a newbie with his processor. It has not even been a year yet for him. He surely has not tried all the different mappings out there. Good luck to him! I hope he someday soon has that " Ah, this is a nice map! " And congratulations to you. Many of us hate new mappings for the first few days, or so. I know it takes about a week for me to adjust to a new mapping. But if he is really not getting what he needs from his audiologist, go to someone else. By all means. Meanwhile, is dad wearing the processor all the time he's awake? Because you really need to have it on all the waking hours to make sure your brain is adapting to it. And have dad make a list of what he is hearing, what it sounds like and so forth. All those things help with mapping.
