Deborah,

A volume map (offered on both the Freedom and 3G) increases and decreases

the loudness of environmental sounds around you. When used with a standard

dial setting of 5, sounds can be made louder or softer similarly to a

hearing aid.

Thanks ! I'll ask my audie more about that, next

time I see him. I've never done anything creative with

the volume. In fact, I tend to just leave my volume at

my default setting of 9 on all four programs (Freedom)

and adjust the sensitivity if needed.

Deb,

No problem! You may find that a little more volume helps increase your

overall speech understanding. I can't say for sure though since I'm also a

new (and very happy!) user of the Freedom. <smile> Do let us know what your

audi has to say when you see him!

Hi !

Here's an update: I emailed my audie with the email

you sent me, with your description of the " volume

mapping " . He nor his supervisor were familiar with

that phrasing. He got a lot of his training from April

Hahn, now of Cochlear. He forwarded it to her to ask

her what's what.

Meanwhile, I have had volume adjustments, but not for

a while. I am currently at volume 9 as my default

setting for all four programs on the freedom. Then I

very occasionally re-work my Ts and Cs. That helps a

lot!

What does the volume map look like for you? I'm going

to get to the bottom of this LOL

Thanks.

Hi !

My audie spoke with April Hahn at Cochlear and this is part of his email to me

(regarding the volume mapping issue):

Regarding your question about " volume maps " , April said this is a feature

which is available on the 3G, but not the newer Freedom processor. Since the 3G

can only store two programs, the user has a choice of either a " volume map " or a

" sensitivity map " . If the user chooses the volume map then, yes, the volume

wheel works similar to the volume wheel on a conventional hearing aid. When the

writer stated that this feature was available on the 3G and the Freedom, it left

us all a bit puzzled. The Freedom has different (and technically superior)

pre-processing strategies (i.e., ADRO) to replace the earlier features available

on the 3G. Perhaps the best way to think of it is this way: the Freedom now

adjusts " volume " autom! atically, whereas the 3G required the user to adjust

" volume " manually. Does that help?

So there you have it! Let me know if you feel you were told differently.

Thanks.

,

I don't know about , but I couldn't afford the expense of going to

AADB this year like I thought I could. I was told AADB was supposed to have

more informational seminars about CIs this year.

Deb,

I guess I confused everyone by thinking the Freedom was capable of both

volume and sensitivity settings just like the 3G. Sorry about that! By the

way, I e-mailed my audi to ask her what the numbers 1-20 represent and she

told me they adjust microphone sensitivity. The higher the number, the

greater the distance of sounds the microphone picks up. I have mine set to

the default setting of 9 for the first three open program slots and it works

like a charm when used with autosensitivity. At my next mapping I plan to

try ADRO as well and will report back on my experiences. From what I've

read, it works wonderfully well for music, so I'm especially interested in

trying that for myself!

Thanks for posting the information from April. Again I apologize for the

confusion!

now you have me confused. The Freedom IS capable of both volume and

sensitivity settings. If you hold down the sensitivity toggle (either right or

left) a V will appear in the window. You can then set the volume rather than

the sensitivity. FYI.... Volume settings only go up to 9.

I'm not sure what the actual conversation was about but the Freedom is capable

of both volume and sensitivity settings. Thos settings can be locked and

unlocked by your audie, however, if they are not locked you can change them. It

takes a little practice to adjust them but they can be changed if they are not

locked.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

The sensitivity and volume control is the bottom button on the processor.

If you hold down the left side of the dual button quickly the s appears for

sensitivity. If the then hold down the right side of the dual button, after

the

s appears, and keep it down the v appears for volume. The left side

decreases and the right side increases both the sensitivity and the volume

individually...one at a time. It takes some getting use to, but once you get

it, it

becomes easy. Also the same button when both sides are held down changes into

the t-coil for telephone use.

Hope this clarifies.

M,

You said, " If you hold down the left side of the dual button quickly the s

sensitivity. If the then hold down the right side of the dual button,

after the

s appears, and keep it down the v appears for volume. " My audie told me if I

press either side briefly, the S appears. If I press either side for a

longer time, the V appears. In my experience the left side is not just for S

and the right just for V.

You are correct . You can press either side to be able to change the

volume setting. Left will make it lower and right will make it louder for

either the volume or sensitivity.

you are correct, if you touch either side of the rocker switch

(the lowe oval button) the S for Sensitivity will appear, then you

depress the right side to increase the setting and the left fo

decrease it. To control volume you simply depress and HOLD either

side of the rocker switch until the V for Volume appears then it is

the same Left to decrease right to increase. Funny about this when my

Audi was showing me these settings she did exactaly as described by

M. she touched the left then held the right, I found myself doing the

same ever since, but it works either way, as long as you touch one

side or depress & hold either side you will switch between S & V.

Carol,

After sending that post, I realized the error I made in the first sentence.

Sorry about that -- I should have sent a follow-up post correcting my

mistake.

Connie,

Thanks for this information! Before my audi locked my volume setting at 9

(to avoid increasing or decreasing the settings accidentally), I had the

opportunity to adjust volume and sensitivity, but didn't understand what I

was hearing or what I was doing. Now I do. This information will be helpful

should I have my current settings unlocked and need someone to adjust them

to a particular number where I hear best.
