Guest guest
Larry, Your audi is right about the fact that no studies have been done to examine the benefits of bilateral CIs for those who are totally blind. However, that doesn't mean there haven't been studies about the use of BI-CIs for those who are sighted. Perhaps you could use those studies as a basis for arguing your need for bilateral CIs? Otherwise I wonder if an O & M instructor could make this argument on the basis that two ears are better than one -- and crucial safety wise for the deafblind. Guest guest
Larry and , I think its time to create studies of blind people and the need for bilaterals. Its not reasonable to use the current studies out when they dont even cater to the specific needs of blind people. Which reminds me. I have not heard back from my audie regarding my request for the records. Geez. Gonna go rattle his cage right now. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Hard work never hurt anyone, but why take the chance. & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
, Perhaps you, myself and any other deafblind members of the list could contact our respective CI centers and ask if they could conduct these studies? I don't know how this would be done, but if we make a coordinated effort, perhaps we can get some studies underway. Surgery date: 12/22/04 (14 days and counting!) Guest guest
I have already contacted Cochlear to see what needs to be done to make this happen. These types of studies are usually conducted by the manufacturer. Let's see what kind of response I get. It wouldn't hurt for others to contact the company that manufactures their implant to make them aware of the interest. Alice
Guest guest
Alice, Great idea! If you do hear back from Cochlear (or anyone else on the list hears from AB or Med-El), I'd love to know what their response is. This kind of study is important and may even help increase the awareness of CIs within the deafblind community. Surgery date: 12/22/04 (14 days and counting!) Guest guest
Alice, Anyone in particular who might be persuaded at Cochlear? I agree this would be better than contacting indivdual centers. It then would not be hard for the blind CI'ers to mass mail the one person. Right ? *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Some days you'll feel like a fire hydrant and all your friends are dogs! & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
<<It then would not be hard for the blind CI'ers to mass mail the one person. Right ?>> , I agree. This sounds like the best way for us to get together as a whole and communicate with the CI companies. Surgery date: 12/22/04 (14 days and counting!) Guest guest
Alice, Would you please post the direct addy for contacting Cochlear about DB studies? Thanks. Guest guest
, I'll post it when I get the information. So far, I don't believe there are any but it sounds like a reasonable trial so we'll see whether I get a response. Alice
