Guest guest
Dora, My CI evaluation was also pretty thorough. Although I was declared a CI candidate after my first audiogram, my audi noticed a significant drop in my right ear (usually represents 10-15 dB loss in one or more frequencies) and wanted to determine the cause. Because of my neonatal history, they ruled out auditory neuropathy by giving me an ABR. The ABR results didn't even show a mild case. A month later I was scheduled for a second audiogram and put on allergy meds for 30 days to find out whether or not my hearing would stabilize. It did. When I was on allergy meds, my hearing loss was severe-profound in my right ear and profound in my left. When I was off medication, it was profound bilaterally. Interestingly enough after taking the allergy medication, I found that I could hear vowel sounds with my left ear -- something I've been unable to do for the past 10 years. It didn't help my speech discrimination or take me out of candidacy, but it did help my audi realize that other causes (like allergies) can also be suspect for progressive and/or fluctuating hearing loss. Guest guest
Hi My audiologist figures in the parts of the words that I get correctly. Both the total word and parts of words scores would improve with a CI.The 50 -60% average score with a CI seems to be low to me. Guest guest
Dora I am just curious. Did you have to have a second balance test when you went bilateral. I did not have a balance test for my first CI, however, the doctor has ordered one before I go bilateral. I know it has something to do with finding out if the first surgery affected my balance and my unimplanted ear is taking over for it. Thanks!!!
