Guest guest
That is like Sue on the TV show lip-reading through binoculars via a mirror and not missing a word. Guest guest
Dora and Jane, Dora, I hate to say this, but what a ridiculous storyline! Being able to find a ticking bomb with only one CI? Yeah, right. Only in " soapland. " LOL! Do you know if the soap happened to mention her CI brand? It's been such a long time since I saw the show that I no longer remember. Jane, LOL! While I think the program Sue : FBEYE was good and did alot to help educate viewers about sign language and deafness, (I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this), I had a very difficult time believing that she could lipread as well as she did on that show. While many d/Deaf and hard of hearing people may be excellent lipreaders, I know that some of them report exhaustion at having to constantly look for the source of who is speaking. While there were times here and there where she couldn't understand what was being said, for the most part, she did an excellent job. I also don't remember her using an interpreter during any part of the show -- something that I think would have been critical -- especially during information gathering at a crime scene and interviewing possible suspects. If I remember correctly, one of her co-workers used sign, but she was the only person familiar with sign language. Then again, I could be completely wrong about her lipreading abilities. I did know a girl in my high school who was born Deaf and was an excellent lipreader, so perhaps it's entirely possible that Sue *could* lipread on the show as well as she did. All criticism aside, I think Sue : FBEYE did a wonderful job educating its viewers about sign language and other aspects concerning what it's like to be severely hard of hearing or d/Deaf. Guest guest
To add to. How about the fact that Grissom is supposed to be hearing impaired on CSI Vegas but he doesn't wear hearing aids and certainly hears lots of things when they are in the field. So amazing Connie dora_weber@... wrote: Hi Deb Oh ,but i was trying to be funny! There were people right on top of the bomb that didn't hear the ticking and here she heard it from way in the back of the church and walked right up to it!Things like this happen only in soap operas!!LOL!!I remember how frustrated my surgeon was about how the CI was portrayed!! Guest guest
I agree with you . I adored the show. The real Sue was a very good lip-reader, but she got about 30% of what was said, not almost 100%, and not through binoculars, etc. I doubt also, that she was able to lip-read Russian names through binoculars. LOL The way the show portrayed her may have made communication for deaf people seem a lot easier than it is, but it also showed hearing people that we are just like them, except that we can't hear. I miss that show. Jane Re: Young and Restless Dora and Jane, Dora, I hate to say this, but what a ridiculous storyline! Being able to find a ticking bomb with only one CI? Yeah, right. Guest guest
Jane, I agree with you about Sue -- especially with regard to lipreading Russian names! I think that would be close to impossible to do. I believe the show is currently being shown on the Pax channel. However, I haven't seen it as of late. I thought I read somewhere that the show was going to air again sometime in the future, but the producers are looking for more funding in order to make that happen. Guest guest
They officially ended the series due to lack of funding. Then, I think Pax may have been bought out or something. I can't get it as Pax anymore, it comes up " i " now. The captioning is also lousy now, so for me it is unwatchable. I wish they would start the show again on a channel that has good captions. Oh well. Jane Re: Young and Restless Jane, I agree with you about Sue -- especially with regard to lipreading Russian names! I think that would be close to impossible to do. Guest guest
Who makes bombs with clockwork timers these days anyway? A cheap digital clock is much more up to date Plus the benefit of a big red display counting down looks SO dramatic. Guest guest
Like I said in an earlier post, if the brand name was mentioned and especially with this storyline, it would have been a great advertising tool for the manufacturer, but a gross misrepresentation of the facts. Whatever happened to truth in advertising? These misrepresentations should NOT be allowed to happen, especially on national TV. Your US Medical Board should have bought someone to task over it. But as I said.........money talks. Was the actress deaf in real life and did she get a cochlear implant in real life? Did she ever say what kind she got? Because if she did, people would associate it with the soapy storyline. She should be next in line for the Wonderwoman role :-) Ted F. > > Dora and Jane, > > Dora, I hate to say this, but what a ridiculous storyline! Being > able to find a ticking bomb with only one CI? Guest guest
Ted, Yes, this actress was deaf and real life and really did receive a CI. Since she was interested in getting a CI, the producers thought they would add it to the storyline. I can't remember the actresses' name, but I'll see if I can find more information about her and post it here. Guest guest
I want to know if Devon came out of surgery with a cute bandage, and a nice hairstyle. Unlike those of us who had REAL surgery and " bandage hair " for days. It will be interesting to see if Devon has instant hearing, unlike the real world for so many of us. Let us know. I'm not about to start watching soap operas, but it will be interesting to see how it's handled. 7b. Re: Don't Miss the Young and the Restless on December 6th! Posted by: " Kozlik " lisak70@... neondreamr Tue Dec 5, 2006 3:16 pm (PST) , Thanks for the reminder! I'm waiting on pins and needles! LOL! I just hope Y & R will take the opportunity to show that one doesn't instantly hear *everything* once their CI is activated. Does anyone on the list know whether Devon has one or two CIs? Throughout the program I heard his family mention " cochlear implants, " but since I can't see the TV (i.e. his incisions), I don't know whether or not he has bilateral CIs. Guest guest
, I asked a sighted friend of mine about Devon and she said he came out of surgery with a bandage on, but there were no extra gauze pads near the ear. She said you could barely see his incision and there was no evidence of a black eye, swelling, lethargy, extreme tiredness and some of the other side effects that can follow surgery. Guest guest
Oh yeah, Devon is a real trooper! He had a bandage/wrapped head right after surgery and whoo-hoo....next time I saw him, he had no bandage and no shaved areas on his head. Wow...wish that's the way it was in real life! I guess vanity has a stronger hold in the make-believe world than it can allow to be in the real world. So far as I know, they've not mentioned if the surgery was bilateral. Maybe today's episode will be more clear on that. The important thing is that perhaps people who don't know about this surgery/implant will check into their own possibilities. They usually have a moment where the actor speaks at the end of the segment about the " health " issue the writers have included into the show. Guest guest
Since I can't see the TV, I was also confused as to whether or not Devon received one implant or two. I heard his family and friends refer to " Devon's cochlear implants " several times during the show which led me to believe that he was going to receive bilaterals. However, several people told me that Devon only has an incision above his left ear. So far I haven't seen any posts that discuss what happened on today's show. I'll be watching the evening airing of Y & R on Soapnet, so will save my comments for later. I'm anxiously waiting to see how Devon's activation is handled. Hopefully it will be as realistic as possible.
