Guest guest
Larry, This person has Meniere's Disease and as a result has lost her hearing in both ears (bilateral meniere's) She works but has no insurance. She has applied to VR but they are telling her at least 3 to 6 months before they can give her an answer. She is concerned that VR won't really help financially anyway, and I've never heard of VR paying for a CI....or am I naive about this? > > , > Could you please supply background information on this CI wannahear? Guest guest
Thanks for not being hostile about giving pertinent information about this individual. My only suggestion would be to quit her job, go on Medicaid, get the CI, and try to get a better job that offers work insurance. Vocational Rehabilitation paid for 20% of the cost of my surgeries, and 80% was paid for with Medicare. Believe me, I kept all documentation just in case they try to bill me. Guest guest
I wasn't aware of that one. (smile) This is a good example of self advocacy. Guest guest
Larry, Self advocacy. What is it without information? Guest guest
Larry, Did vocational rehabilitation in the state of Arkansas pay 20% towards your CI surgery? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to compile a list of CI funding options for the deafblind other than Medicaid and Medicare. If I learn of more cases where VR is paying partial and total cost of CI surgery, I would like to add that information to my list of resources. Guest guest
Hi - Several years ago I knew someone in FL (not deaf blind, just deaf) who had Vocational Rehab pay for his CI. >>If I learn of more cases where VR is paying partial and total cost of CI surgery, I would like to add that information to my list of resources.<< Lorie Clarion 1.2 5/96 NYC
Guest guest
, Yes, Vocational Rehabilitation for the state of Arkansas played for 20% of my bilateral surgeries. It is not easy to get Medicaid or Medicare to pay the other 80%, but it is possible with perseverance and self advocacy. Milo, the best rule of thumb is to meet them and communicate with them in person with your CI. I left my hearing aid at home so they knew I had to be communicating with my CI. Since I had trouble facing the lady, I also illustrated succinctly that having bilateral implants would be advantageous to me as a totally blind person. I am nothing special. You can do it too! The decision was also agonizing to me because I didn't want to lose all vestiges of natural hearing. However, I don't need to worry about my hearing getting worse. It will only get better! Guest guest
Larry, I highly doubt my VR counselor will pay anything towards the cost of a second CI. Even when I requested a BrailleNote for use with realtime captioning at school, she was reluctant to pay the cost. She's an excellent counselor, but tends to be very careful about how and where money is spent. For now I'm going to see what kind of response we get from Medicaid and Medicare. My surgeon doesn't anticipate any problems with approval. I hope he's right!! <smile> I should receive an answer one way or the other within the next several weeks. I hope to go bilateral very soon. My digital hearing aids stopped working again (for the 5th time since 2001). One of the aids is exhibiting the same symptoms it did back in June/July which is indicative of a problem with the internal amplifier. The other aid has a damaged microphone that causes sound to fade in and out. The microphone has been repaired several times yet continues to give me problems. I've given up on these aids. It's hard to believe my analog Oticon 380Ps that are over 10 years old have never needed repair and continue to work perfectly to this day. I told my CI audi I've given up on the digitals, but will continue to wear my analog. Fortunately I have two of them, so if one needs repair, I still have the other. Thank goodness for small favors. Guest guest
Lori, Thanks for sharing this information with me! Although I'm compiling this list specially for the deafblind clients I work with (or communicate with by e-mail), I'm sure others would appreciate this information as well. By the way, this afternoon I received an e-mail from a teacher whose student is totally deafblind and considering a CI. I don't want to disclose any specific information for obvious reasons, but this is encouraging! The more information and resources we can compile for the deafblind (or *anyone* considering a CI), the more informed they will be when it comes to making this decision. I'm one of the lucky ones because I had this forum to turn to when I had questions or concerns. I know others here who did not have that opportunity because there was no Internet at the time they received a CI! Thanks again!! Guest guest
, Point us to that. This is from their criteria.... 1.. Applications will be considered only if the candidate is a permanent legal resident of the United States. In the case of applicants who are under 18 years of age at the time of their application, the legal guardians must show proof of permanent, legal US residence. Where does it say Colorada residents only? *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. -- & Dreamer Doll (Guide Dawggie) Newport, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rclark0276@... http://webpages.charter.net/dog_guide/ NEW Home Page! Guest guest
, I'd be surprised if VR really pays the 20% or even a fraction of that given how tight VR budgets are all across the country. I also am skeptical if it matters what status their case is in. As you know all too well, its like pulling teeth to even get basics paid for let alone have VR pay, what, $10.000 towards surgery costs. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* I just broke up with someone and the last thing she said to me was, " You'll never find anyone like me again! Guest guest
, I am very glad your doctor concurs with you on bilateral CI's On a personal note, when my surgeon recommended it for me, I knew I would get the funding. Have you asked your vr counselor about paying for 20% of your CI? There is nothing I can say at this time. As was the case with me, once the surgeon recommended the operation, it is just a matter of time. If your surgeon didn't think the CI's would be paid for, would he have made the recommendation? I also had two Oticon 380's that gave me no trouble and never had to be repaired. My Phonaks, on the other hand, needed repair three months after I received them. I can understand 's frustration and hostility and frustration because he thought I didn't give him information. I did! May I suggest he might have inadvertently hit the delete key without reading the email? He wrote me one email in which he cursed me out. I'm glad you are more well mannered. I am tired of bantering with him. I asked him if he could see and used alternative means of communications. I told him he would deal with Medicaid or Medicare differently than if he were totally blind and communicating. He got bent out of shape and told me his background information was none of my business. I hope you have a pleasant day. Guest guest
This is only speculation. However, VR might very well say an emphatic no. What will it be if you don't become a self advocate and at least ask? No! Guest guest
Larry, LOL Have you ever had your questions answered with questions instead of answers? I told you that you did not need my background. You dont need to know how much sight I have or what methods I use for communication. It is irrelevant. Let me worry about communications with Medicare or whomever I talk to. I asked simple and direct questions. The approach to Medicare is the same regardless of whether I am sighted or total. So, again, will you answer my questions without playing your self advocate game? We are not sitting in on a seminar on how to advocate so lectures are not appropriate. If you dont know, then say so. If you dont want to help the deafblind, say so. And by the way, why the fixation on " totally blind " ? Does it make any difference that I am not totally blind? *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up. -- & Dreamer Doll (Guide Dawggie) Newport, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rclark0276@... http://webpages.charter.net/dog_guide/ NEW Home Page! Guest guest
And by the way Larry, if you really understand my frustration, why dont you just be a nice fella and give me answers? Or would you rather talk to , who is too nice to become hostile? She and I have the same questions, yet you still cannot or wont give the answers we seek?
