Guest guest
You're not crazy! My experiences are similar. Sometimes I get this when I have a slight head cold. Guest guest
, You are not alone... I started experiencing very infrequent sporatic episodes of such events some 5 months after surgery. There seems to be no rythme or reasons for it. It first started when it awoke me from a very sound sleep and I then realized it was happening. It scared me to death (at first having no idea what was going and everything has been quiet up to this point when not wearing my CI device) but it subsided slowly over two hours or so and it stopped. Since then, I have had maybe less than a dozen episodes of various intensities but nothing quite like the first. Like you, I notice along with the " tinnitus " that I hear much louder as well. Typically, it is not so loud that I have to change my volume setting. I did have an episode (an early one) where I did do just that. I have a hunch there may be a correlation (for me anyway) when I have drainage issues in my eustachian tube. I'm thinking possibly when I have lots of drainage that there is some pressure internally that could trigger this from time to time. Since, it is very infrequent, I'm not inclined to worry about it too much right now. I have mentioned it to my Audi and she wanted me to see the Doctor about it. I told her I wanted to wait to see what transpires and since it is rather seldom. We will see but as I said earlier I'm not too concerned at the moment. Since I was activated, they are becoming less. One thing that I notice (unless I am absolutely out of my tree, which is quite possible, LOL) is that during the tinnitus, it seems I get a huge boost in sound level. Even after the tinnitus has subsided, it seems I hear more loudly than I did prior to the onset of the tinnitus...has anyone else experienced this or is it just crazy me? Guest guest
Dale and , I also have problems with blocked Eustachian tubes and allergies. From what my ENT told me, tinnitus is one of the symptoms of an ear infection and can be an indicator of drainage and/or blocked Eustachian tubes. Oddly enough, tinnitus has never been a problem for me. I've experienced mild episodes in my left ear that only lasted for a minute or two, but nothing that required medical treatment. However, following my CI surgery I did experience severe tinnitus that was quite bothersome to me. Mine alternated between a high pitched beep, ocean/whooshing sound and freight train. Just when I became used to one sound, it changed to another. It was so bothersome to me that I asked my surgeon to prescribe something to help it subside or go away completely. He prescribed Prednisone, but after learning about the possible side effects, I decided to wait it out since I only had a week before activation. I continued to experience tinnitus after my activation (whenever I removed my speech processor). It improved over time and although it's something I still experience, it now equates to a fan turned on low speed and is something I can easily ignore. Guest guest
, I never had tinnitus until my hearing worsen in July of this summer. When I first got tinnitus it took me 3 days to get used to it. It varies in pitches, from soft to loud. Sometimes the noise gets quite loud, like a train whistling or buzzing humming noise, it drowns out the sounds around me. It drove me nuts in the beginning. I couldnt sleep well either. I still have tinnitus constantly (never went away) and I was going nuts as there is no escape from it. I read online that there is no cure for it although there are herbal or medicinal remedies to relief temproarily. I had to learn acceptance and to ignore tinnitus. I have learnt very well by now how to ignore it. At one point I got extreme headache and nausea because of it. I took gravol and slept through it. Now I am so used to tinnitus that sometimes I forget it's even there. Shoot, when I hear about your experience with tinnitus , I thought having CI will make tinnitus go away once I can hear sounds better. How many of you who are profoundly deaf in both ears have tinnitus? Do they go away after a while, or do you get it for the rest of your life? Guest guest
Nora, You said, " I thought having CI will make tinnitus go away once I can hear sounds better. " It may or may not go away but the CI can mask the tinnitus. No way to know the outcome but the masking can help. I am more aware of tinnitus when its quiet or the CI is off. Sometimes its made worse, in my case, by caffeine. So I quit drinking coffee on a regular basis but have to have a mocha now and then. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Never miss a good chance to shut up. & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Newport, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rclark0276@... http://webpages.charter.net/dog_guide/ NEW Home Page! Guest guest
I have always had tinnitus and still do with the CI. The Ci does mask tinnitus, but in my case it is the sound I hear with the Ci. The tinnitus is still there, but faintly when I hear sound. At night when my processor is off, it is as loud as ever. Guest guest
lil'nora77, Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that having a CI will eliminate tinnitus. When I had tinnitus following my surgery, my surgeon and audi told me it would get better once my CI was activated, but may never disappear completely. They were right. My tinnitus has improved significantly, but is still there whenever I remove my speech processor. I hope that when you have CI surgery, it will help improve your tinnitus (or help to mask it). My tinnitus went from being very loud and intense (freight train, ocean/whooshing sound, high pitched beeping) to an ocean/whooshing sound that equates to a fan turned on low. Some people have taken medication to ease tinnitus, but I don't know how well that works. I hope your tinnitus improves to some extent after having a CI. I know how irritating it can be and am looking forward to the day when they find a cure! Guest guest
> How many of you who are profoundly deaf in both ears have tinnitus? > Do they go away after a while, or do you get it for the rest of your > life? Hi Lil_Nora I am profoundly deaf in both ears, didn't have tinnitus until I started to lose my hearing. My tinnitus worsened after I got a CI, I hear humming constantly but when I wear my CI it's not that noticeable.
Guest guest
Nora, Tinnitus used to keep me awake at night for years. I would focus on a peaceful scenery, such as a waterfall to blend in with the tinnitus so I could go to sleep. After bilateral CI surgery, it sounded like freight trains running through both ears lasting a few seconds but seemed like forever at the time. At hookup, the right ear was mild but it took longer for the tinnitus to calm down in the left ear. Now I hardly notice it anymore unless we are talking about it or I have sinus/allergies. Even at night after I pull my CI's off it is only mild. Guess I am one of the lucky ones.
