Guest guest
Just want to add my experience to this very helpful discussion of mobile phones and technology: I've been told by Cingular that I need to upgrade my cell phone due to Cingular's phasing out of their analog technology and going over to digital phones/GSM. I've had an extra $4.99 plus fees added to my monthly bill because my phone is analog. The phone didn't work when we were in in Tennessee and North Carolina this summer due to the changeover to GSM; it DID work in several other states. We were not notified of the changes in technology until about three weeks ago. Went to the Cingular store in my neighborhood shopping center last weekend. The two young men there " found one " ...a TTY-compatible phone!!!!!!! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I did demonstrate for them what TTY compatible meant!!! They knew nothing about the telecoil compatible phones but tried to be helpful. I directed them to the HLAA Web site, where they clicked on a link to ha compatible phones. They found they did not stock the type of phone I need. They were going to continue to see what they could find out and see if they could locate a phone for me. What bothers me most is that I have a great plan with Cingular...$29.95 a month, but by time all the fees are added it comes to almost $43. When I buy a new phone I have to sign up for a new plan with a two year contract, minimum cost $39.95 per month. I don't even have a contract right now, just pay by the month. Last month my one minute of cell phone use cost nearly $43. I just don't use the phone much, but consider it as insurance in case of breakdown on the highway, or if I'm stuck in traffic and am going to be late...as well as using it when we travel. ....muriel in fort worth
