Guest guest
Deb, Interesting about the audi " locking " the volume. For me when activated, there were no restrictions in volume or sensitivity. I simply was told things were going to be loud and I would have to get used to it. I did set the volume in the office to what I perceived was a decent level and left it at that. Now, I submit when going outside that everything was loud! I didn't change the volume but found the setting for autosensitivity and used that until I got into the car (mind you I was in the Freedom study trials and I had no idea what the different settings were...they wanted me to experiment with them). A suggestion for Ted about driving, if he has a setting like autosensitivitiy, he could use that and it really makes noises while driving managable or other very loud environments. Be aware that you may or may not have control of the volume at activation. My audie gave me control of the sensitivity not the volume, because she knew from experience (and in my case she was right) that if the newly activated has total control over the volume the first day they WILL turn it down and it's important to do the best you can to leave the audie's office with a volume you feel you can tolerate (bearing in mind that the world outside that room is noisier) and try to take it in and give yourself a chance to get used to it. Guest guest
You're welcome! And don't panic too much when you hear weird or startling sounds. Most are from " normal " activities, although I thought the sky was falling a few times until I got used to some sounds LOL Deb Dale...it must've been so interesting being a part of the freedom trials! --- " Ted F. Guest guest
Deb, Yes, it was. I kind of enjoyed trying to " guess " the different setting and seeing what worked for me. Basically, it went for six months with many visits during that time (technically it wasn't over after I reached one year). Not knowing exactly which setting was which is the only thing that drove me crazy. I did guess the autosensitivity one fairly quickly but the others weren't so obvious. I did find ADRO my favorite rather quickly as well but I didn't know what was its name until later (believe it or not it wasn't until my one year appt that I got all the program names from them). I believe they did make me go with different speeds and I do remember some awful maps that I just didn't like. Fortunately, I had fairly frequent mappings so I didn't suffer too long! They had me do lots of word and sentence tests which weren't easy for me at first. This was mainly for the fact my hearing had gotten to the point (prior to the CI) where I had no longer trusted what I heard if I wasn't paying attention. Talk about a transition with the CI where you could trust and depend on your hearing (probably for the first time in my life). That has probably been the greatest benefit for me...to be able to respond in kind and quickly without confusion or doubts over what was said. Before with my HA, you got tired of asking people " Excuse me but I didn't catch that... " bit. Nowadays, I seldom have to ask for a repeat and that is soooo nice! On a side not, the biggest surprise for me was music. I was listening to all of my favorites and more that first week and no problems. In fact, I purposely listened to music from day two on to " train " my brain to get used to the CI input. I must of been one of the fortunate ones where speech, music and the environmental sounds all sounded good pretty much by the end of the first week.
