, it's really a mystery isn't it--the doc can't explain why you

lose your hearing overnight. The specialist suspected inflammation of

the hearing nerves, some kind of viral infection.

Thanks for your valuable input on the CI devices. I read Med-el

brochure, and i noticed several stars on ads to indicate rread tp

read the ssmall print--toy I was not impressed because the features

they advertised are not in use yet--it was all research based and

that they will try to implement in the future. So I will draw up a

chart, write down what features each CI company offers now. You guys

also gave me ideas to look into if it's upgradable and programmable

in the future. Also I hope the CI i choose will stay forever in the

market, or else i'd be stuck with the implant.

, when you say The Freedom has 4 different mapping strategies,

I got lost. Can you explain more about mapping strategies. What each

strategy does (SPEAK, Hi-ACE, regular ACE & CIS) How do you control

volume and sensitivity with BTE? It is like a hearing aid, where you

can just press the button or turn the dial? I dont' remember seeing

buttons on the BTE. The audiologist showed me 3 BTES (each from

different company) and I guess I didn't really look at them closely

When I was 4 years old, I used to wear the horrible ugly big FM

system harnessed to my body. I looked at my school pic, and I was

pretty upset that this is what I wore as a kid. I remember it was

heavy too. I shunned using the FM system when I was a teenager. I was

reallly self conscious about it. Now with the pager size body worn

processor, I thought maybe it would be cool if I dont have anything

on my ear. I've always feel so self conscious of my hearing aid when

I tie my hair up. The hearing aid looks so unattractive when

exposed. I've seen singers, anchorman or reporters clip their FM

behind their pants and slip the cord under the shirt/blouse at the

back. I thought of clipping the body worn processor on the front of

my pants/shirts (like wearing a normal pager) and hide the cord

behind my back under my shirt. But you bought up a good point about

the bathroom. Maybe I can unplug the cord from the magnet, and hold

it or unplug and put the processor in my purse? Have someone try this

before? I hope the audi will loan it to me but i doubt it.

I have probably over half a year to think on this. I prolly most

likely go with BTE, but i would like to explore other options. Wonder

if any of you out there prefer the box over the BTE these days? If

you do, please share.

Hehe that was funny about putting the processor between your boob.

Definitely not going to do that. hehe. It's even funnier if you

decide to hide it under your shirt. hahahah. okay gotta behave.

Wow, i didn't even thought of the intimate moments. That is really

good point. Hehe gotta tell hubby about this. I completely forgot

about that. Don't think I would want to unhook myself from hearing

hubby during those intimate moments. Drats..i guess I better be

creative. Hey does Nucleus give you the option of switching BTE and

the body worn processor? I remember someone mentioned if I want a

second processor, it will cost me $6000 US. Holy moly. I'll see if I

can find out if my insurance company and hubby's will cover most of

it.

Hey i better go catch CSI season premiere tonite. I will be back

replying to y'all. And YES my name is Nora. Hehehe i'm petite too.

That's why my nick is Lil Nora.

Later

Nora

Nora,

Now, I'm a little puzzled by your statement. I live in NC and I was implanted

with a Cochlear Freedom back in March. I was told that by law (here in NC?)

that I would be getting two processors as part of the overall package. I

believe the reason was because the device is a " critical " component to my

interaction within society (I couldn't remember exactly my Audi said). So, if

one " broke down " , I had the other to use until the other one got fixed. I

thought that was great compared to when I had my HA. When using HAs, I had to

keep my " old " one after I got my new one to have a convenient spare when

necessary.

Given my situation, I was going to tell you that you could get both a BTE and a

BWP and have the best of both worlds. Obviously, that doesn't appear to be your

case of getting two.

A question for others - What is the standard number of devices one gets when

getting the implant? Is getting one the standard? I feel really blessed to get

two.

Dale,

I believe CI centers vary in the number of processors they give their

clients. My CI center provides two so that clients can continue using one

processor while the other is being repaired. Another advantage of having

two processors is that it gives a person 8 programs (or in the case of the

3G -- 4) to work with during the early days of activation when more frequent

mappings may be necessary.

Sigh! I can believe it but it can be tough on those that have only one. I have

seen everybody saying they are roughly $6000 or so at a pop. I would hope that

a " spare " can be provided while they are awaiting repairs. I would hate to have

to wait however long and not be able to hear during that time.

My wife was just telling me the other day that I don't lipread like I did when I

had my surgery and I was waiting for my hookup. Ummm, I wonder why {grin}...

Thanks,

Dale

Hi Dale,

I was given two processor and chose the BTE but was told both

processors had to be BTE.

I live in the province of Onatrio (canada) and here OHIP (government)

covers everything, the surgery and the cochlear implant device. The

audi said I have one choice, to choose between BTE or body worn

processor as this it covers by OHIP. Repair and batteries are not. She

said if I want another processor, it would be around $6000 US. I do

have health insurance at work, and I need to find out if the implant

device is covered. If so, it will cover 80%. Then hopefully my

husband's insurance can absorb the rest.

Hmm Dale brought up a good point. What happens if my processor needs

repair and i need a backup? I wonder if the hospital will give me a

loaner. I would ask the audi about that.
