Guest guest
Hi, I think it is a great idea to nominate Terri for Extreme Home Makeover. I went to ABC's website to see how to go about this. It is an Adobe applications and suggests a video tape. I wonder if Terri could put together a video tape story and we could all email her letters of our support that her family be nominated, and she could submit it all together?? Here is the website. http://abc.go.com/primetime/xtremehome/casting.html son,Aidan 2yrs (XLA) > > Ok, I ran to Rite Aid to pick up a grocery cart of meds LOL and my > fave tech was there, and she couldnt remember the address, but has it > at home and asked if it was ok for her to call me from home tonight to > give it to me. Guest guest
And when they demolish the old house- I keep thinking how many toxins are in that pile of wood, metal, pipes, etc.... A green house would be wonderful. Also a kitchen stocked with organic, gf/cf foods wouldn’t hurt either. Guest guest
Oh my GOSH...nice to know someone else thinks like I do! I started twitching myself when I realized that the house would be all NEW and all new paint, new furniture. To me that was very scary. Our family lived through a "BLACK MOLD CRISIS". I was pregnant. We moved 10 times in 7 months...(long story) Our house was a newer house..not old if you're wondering. The mold was in the attic...and it had a relationship to an improperly installed radon system and the fact that the builder didn't follow the blueprints properly...and the roof didn't vent properly. Also insurance was culpable. We were on TV and in many newspapers... Long story short...we finally moved back into our house with all new paint and mold retardants etc. We became so SICK! ARRRGGHH! We jumped from the kettle into the fire. We are just now starting to reclaim our health. It has been a very long journey and it still goes on. Suffice to say we lost over $120 thousand...and after 5 years had to drop our case. Not because we were wrong but because we ran out of steam and money. We had to focus on our son and his autism.... So I completely agree with you. I pray they don't suffer now from chemical sensitivities like we do... We know that the "mold" definitely played a part in our son's autism and our health problems today. ( I mean how could we deny it...they found "mold" in his blood..., ears, mouth, etc... and cultured it and many of the strains were present in our home in high levels...) Even writing this e-mail is hard... I have to stop. That part of our lives is done...thank goodness. So yes...the off gassing is going to be a problem. There are things they could do to prevent the intensity. I wonder if I found out how to send Extreme Makeover the suggestions. I also agree..I really wish they had just gone GREEN. The could have used things like Marmoleum or cork for flooring (with some nice side benefits) They could have used some paints that have low or no offgassing (even Sherwin carries some now)....oh I could go on and on... Sorry for it being so long...it just really struck a cord with me. -Ohio

Guest guest
I thought the house turned out like all the extreme makeover houses. The first floor is one big room and then each bedroom is decorated based on something the person is interested in. They did have a doctor on there to teach them about autism who said that an alarm system would be good, well duh! This doctor also said the kids should have their own bedrooms. If they said why the parents had three of the kids in their bedroom at night I didn't hear but i can guess some reasons why they did so I'm not sure how the new bedrooms will be any better. The open kitchen just bugs me. I want I kitchen with doors that I can lock so my refrigerator door isn't opened in the middle of the night and left open. That along with half the cabinet doors. I feel that way and I don't have the problem of everything getting thrown on the floor like they did. I wonder how long the potted plants and vases lasted. I didn't figure out they had two sons till near the end. I didn't get till the end that the youngest(?)is non-verbal; I hope that vanguard (?) system helps him. Maybe I 'm just too sensitive but Ty's comment that autism is about social deficts and one of the decorators saying they all had such high IQs and did so well in school just bothered me. I don't think that went along with all the stuff that was going on in that house. Or mine. Autism is a lot harder than that. > > > > All I kept thinking about was how sick those poor kids were going to > > be from the off-gassing from all the chemicals, paints, new carpeting > > and building materials. Guest guest
All I could think of was the Volitile Organic Compounds from the fresh paint, formaldehyde from the glues used in the plywood, antinomy and pesticides from the carpets and matresses-and the family moving right in. Wished the house would have been loaded with water filters, organic materials, air cleaners, etc. Was glad to see no pool in the backyard but was wondering if the playset was cedar or redwood. My heart did go out to this family. I was happy when they relieved their mortgage. Interesting that they said mom needed to around forever. We know that feeling. > > > > > > All I kept thinking about was how sick those poor kids were going > to > > > be from the off-gassing from all the chemicals, paints, new > carpeting > > > and building materials. Guest guest
I think they might have done a lot more- but didn’t show it. I kept thinking I would have wanted cameras in all the bedrooms and a command center or two- so I can see what is going on in all the rooms. We always look at these shows with years of experience of autism. I’m sure I’ll have someone come up to me and say “I saw on Home Makeover that children with autism like music- did you know that?”..... Zzzzzz BUT- for THEM- it’s interesting- it’s new- it’s autism. Years ago all people knew about autism was Rainmain. Now they think about Lily on All My Children or the houses on Home Makeover. It’s a huge improvement. Of course not where WE want to be exactly- but a hell of a lot of better than someone telling me it’s ok to have a child with autism because he’ll be smart and memorize the phone book. What bugged me about the 60m piece is how the mom is just waiting to get the dx before doing anything. She should be doing the diet, ST, OT, detoxing, etc... RIGHT NOW. What would it hurt? If anything- she’ll get a jump on his autism. How many of us wish we started earlier? (probably most). If it’s not autism- then the kid had a lot of fun playing with grownups. I also felt weird about the “low-functioning” and IQ/smart comments. Like it’s OK for a child to have autism, because they are ALL very smart. Which is not true. Guest guest
I personally HATE open floor plans. When I heard them say they were gonna do an open kitchen I thought that was nuts, but they said that's what that mom wanted. I personally like to go into the kitchen & get away from everyone & I don't like the residues from kitchens, like grease, getting on living room furniture & the like. It seemed to me that it would have been easier for her to have it enclosed with one door she had the power to lock them from, but I'm sure she knows her situation better than me. I was wondering where sensory stuff was. I've seen episodes before where they put swings & stuff in, but I had to leave to take my grandmother to the hospital, I left right when they were about to show the couple their master suit. I really feel for that family, esp the typical sister. She seems to have the weight of the world on her little shoulders. Made me think of my oldest NT daughter, they're the same age. They could really use an ABA respite worker just to come help them manage the day. Maybe with the publicity & having their mortgage paid off they can get some help. I thought it was SO FUNNY when Ty was talking to the one girl who drew on everything. Allie does that ALL THE TIME, just like those different colored scribbles, only now Allie's learned how to draw. But I loved it when she gave him the thumbs up with her back to Ty, she seems like a neat kid.
