Guest guest
Hi everyone, My son has been in his helmet now for two weeks and I just wondered if it is normal that it moves around on his head. We try to keep in centered but when he sleeps, it does push toward the side of his head he is sleeping on. I can't imagine fastening the chin strap any tighter around because it would be very uncomfortable. I am hoping that it this loose fit is due to the fact that he is growing into the helmet. Any input would be helpful! Thank you so much. I enjoy checking all the posts and knowing all you other mothers are out there.
Guest guest
, I would give it one more week and if it is still sliding around alot I would get back in to the orthotist for an adjustment. If you have an appointment coming up soon you should definately mention your concern. In the meanwhile I wouldn't worry about tightening the chin strap and the sliding should be ok as long as it isn't sliding into his eyes. You're right though, the way the helmet fits will change everytime your baby has a growth spurt. Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
Guest guest
Hey - a little looseness is to be expected- if it is falling off or spinning sideways then it is definitely too loose and I would call your ortho right away. They do need a little head room to grow into it but you still want it in the right place. I'd call the ortho just to be sure- never feel bad about calling them it always made me feel better. Welcome to the group and good luck with your little pumpkin. Beck mom to brian doc grad
Guest guest
Hi Dana- Grace has a locally made helmet from Primary Childrens Hospital here and the total cost for the helmet and visits etc is $637. We have had incredible success with her helmet she has almost been in it for 2 months and we started noticing a difference right away. I can't speak for everybody who has had a locally made helmet I am sure it all depends on the orthotist and their level of expertise but our experience thus far has been wonderful and her head is looking so beautiful!! and Grace
Guest guest
Dana, We have a lot of members who have used a locally made helmet. Just as with a DOC or STARband, most have had wonderful results, it all depends on the expertise of the ortho/clinician. Prices vary because the ortho is able to determine the cost on their own, depending I assume on materials, expertise and labor..the same is true for the STARbands. Guest guest
Dana, My daughter Makenna has been in her localy made helmet for 2 weeks, and i swear i'm already noticing some progress! she actually has a bump at the base of her skull now, instead of just a flat head! and she is begining to round out some too. SO far i am very pleased with this helmet. Its cost was $650, but insurance paid all but $250 for us. When we decided to go ahead with the helmet, i too was worried that it wouldnt work as well as a band but so far so good.Let us know how things go!! Illinois. Guest guest
Dana: We have several members of our group who have had success in a locally made helmet. It is true that most members in our group have or had use a DOCband or STARband which do cost more than locally made helmets. I see you've gotten good responses from others already. It all depends on the orthotist who will be treating your child. Make sure he has had experience in treating plagio with their helmets before. Guest guest
Dana, My daughter wore a locally made helmet that cost us $700. It worked very well. We asked the ortho about the low price and he explained that because he works for a University Hospital (a research hospital) they sold the helmet to us at cost (no profit) because the helmet was part of research project he was involved with. That was the rationale there. We were very pleased with the helmet - it was a passive device rather then a dynamic band, but we got some very good correction despite a somewhat late start. Good luck and I hope this helps! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
