Guest guest
Lesson 1: The Power of Protein Protein is essential for our good health. Our bodies digest protein more slowly than it does other foods and stays in our system longer, providing us with more consistent blood sugar levels. The small stomach pouch of a gastric bypass patient has such a limited capacity, that in order to consume adequate amounts of protein each day, patients must maintain a diet consisting primarily of protein. Throughout the initial weight loss phase, it is recommended that 70% of one's diet should consist of protein. We must take responsibility to ensure that our body's protein stores are replenished each day. There are two types of protein - those that contain all of the essential amino acids and those that do not. Nutritionists use the terms " complete protein " and " incomplete protein " to describe the differences found in various foods. COMPLETE PROTEINS are derived from animal proteins, such as meat, chicken, eggs, fish, cheese and other milk products. Grains and legumes, tofu and soy are also good sources of protein but do not individually have all of the essential amino acids and therefore are considered INCOMPLETE PROTEINS. Used together, such proteins can compliment one another to form a complete protein. Some foods that are great sources of protein are not good selections because they are too high in fat for those who struggle with their weight. During the first 6 months or so following gastric bypass the fat content is not of much concern because the stomach is so small. However, as the stomach expands to accommodate 3/4th cup - 1 cup selecting low fat proteins becomes more critical. Good selections include fish, poultry, low-fat cheeses & milk. Proteins to use sparingly include beef, eggs (with yolk), whole milk, beans, legumes, and nuts.
