Guest guest
Hello, I'm new to this group. Thought you might have some experiences with an evaluation appointment that could help me out here... A quick info on me: I was born profounded deaf, wear 2 HA all my life (can hear clicks from my keyboard as I type), my speech was ok, lipreading was so-so. Rely on signings most of time due to my socialization with deafies... Mainstreamed with a hearing- impaired program all my life, expect those 5 years at a deaf school. I'm interested in getting a cochlear implant--because my working world is lonely! I don't expect it perfect my speech/lipreading, just hearing sounds a little bit. I'm more determined for this long, hard journey! I went in for my first evaluation to see if I'm a candidate. I was totally unprepared—-no questions in my mind. Only wanted to know if I am the candidate before I'd begin researching, exploring, etc. before I decide to get the CI… Yep, I am. After the researches, I wanted to get a second opinion. Different center won't give me an appointment because the center strongly believes in oral as a primary communication mode is qualified for the candidate. Why would 2 different centers give me 2 different answers? Think I should go back to the first one and ask for re-evaluation? Or find someone else? Does it ever happen to one of you??? Oh, by the way, the first center—-I went in with my mom—-she interpretered for me as much as she could (she couldn't sign that fast..). I voiced my answers and she signed what the audie had said. Now that I asked for an interpreter at the second center so that I can get much answers to my questions. Like I've said before, I didn't prepare for the first ones. Do you think that's a reason why they wouldn't see me because of my requisition for an interpreter???
Guest guest
Kitty sounds like you already qualified to get ci. congrats! why did you wnat to go to another center? were you dissatisifed with first center? i think if you already qualified for ci but unsure if a ci is the right answer for YOU,then you need to find out more on your own about ci. first step you already did, join a ci forum. u can learn alot and ask lot of questions from people on forum like us, ci users or ci candidates. also you could find some people who have ci. do you know anyone in your community who has a ci? do you know any of your freinds that have a ci? do you know anyone with a smilar background as you, someone who wore hearing aids but sign well, etc who got a ci? ask them lot of questions. what is the best thing they like about ci? what was like for them to have surgery etc. most ci users happy to share thier experience with you if you are polite and listen well. also if you are in signing deaf community think about how deaf people will react and can you live with that? deaf community is more accepting of ci thank before but i think you still have to be a strong person too and be very motivated to go thru ci. you can also read some good books by people who have ci. also there are lot of web sites of peole who wrote about their experiences about having a ci. good luck with your research about . ci is not for everyone but most people with ci dont regret it at all. good luck on your journey to see if this is right for you. and remember , do this for YOU if YOU want this. jb
Guest guest
congratulations on making your own decision and doing so so wisely! i think you are doing exactly the rite thing in requesting an interpreter, and i cant imagine that being held against you! best of luck with your evaluation...it's a great time to ask questions and even be asked questions that will make you begin to ask others yourself. have fun with it and use it! that is your time! take care, michelle hearing my new husband Chauncey is profound deaf from birth, waiting CI candidate > Hello, I'm new to this group.
