Guest guest
We are working on it and have been waiting 2 1/2 months now, they say an answer is to be within 90 days here in NY. Irish
Guest guest
Goldy, We haven't tried .. yet. Pat is still able to work, even though the quantity and quality are both suffering. Guest guest
Goldie: We haven't tried. Although my husband hasn't worked for two years, there's something about applying for SS that he just doesn't want any part of (?). I have heard that it is very difficult, but if approved, it becomes retroactive from the date of initial application. I don't know how true this is (I have a friend whose brother works for Social Sec in Baltimore, MD), but I've heard you have to be persistent and that they will automatically deny it an arbitrary number of times until it's obvious you're not going to give up. I guess they weed out a lot that way. Tree
Guest guest
Well, how ironic is this . I just said we are waiting for an answer and low and behold we got one. NO,he was denied. Not disabled they say...if you arent a druggie or an alcoholic or blind or on a kidney machine(cant spell the right word) you arent eligible... So back to the races cause I am not giving up Irish
Guest guest
Irish, Hep C qualifies a person to receive SS disability. It is a hassle but I got it. I too was denied the first time around. So what the heck, I hired an atty. sat back and he did all the rest. After I was diagnosed with hep-c, I worked for 2 more years. It wasn't like I just wanted a hand-out. But honestly the way I feel is this, I worked for the money for over 20yrs and I need it now. Honestly If I didn't get it now, I may never get it. I had to include it in my taxes that I paid for last year. I believe the way the tax thing works is this: if your total income is under $25,000.00 you do not have to pay income tax. But since my husband works this was not the case. So I paid the taxes on it. Don't give up, it's a hassle and a long wait, but it is worth it. I already have insurance (Thank God) but now I have a medicare card too. I only opted for the hospital part, because my insurance is better for the regular visits, meds and such. I was approved for the other part if I had needed it. For those who don't have insurance it's a good deal. Last but not least, this is not welfare. There is no shame in receiving this benefit. If you have any questions that I might help with please let me know. Janet
Guest guest
My Husband has worked for over 35 years and we don't want a hand out just what he is entitled too. I am not giving up and was told to find a lawyer also, but how does this work if you don't mind my asking??? He doesn't have any insurance. That's why we applied to Medicaid and was told to go through the disability. All we wanted was to have them give him the coverage to pay for the tests and meds. No more than that, so many people cheat and connive and get it and he has worked his whole life and gets nothing. I have written many letters to the higher ups (LOL) and haven't received many answers yet.Sotomorrow Iwill re-do them since I got this answerand see where we stand. I would really appreciate any info you can give me in regard to a lawyer, and how it works. Thanks Irish
Guest guest
Irish, I don't know what part of the country you are in, but I'm in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area of Tx. and there are alot of lawyers here. I'm sure that whereever you are there are qualified disability lawyers. My lawyer worked for SS before he went into practice here, so that was a plus. He knew all of the ins and outs. Some of the cheesy ads that you see on TV have disability lawyers. Look in the 'phone book too. Just make sure to ask if they have handled these kinds of cases before. The consultation on the phone is free. You give them a few details and they mail you a packet of papers to fill out. In these papers you will find " Releases " so that the Dr's records will be released to them. You will also get a paper to fill out so that they can get their money when the case is settled. I never even met my lawyer or went to court. I signed a paper and sent it through the mail for them to act on my behalf. The only thing I ever had to " Physically " do was go to SS's shrink. Yep they made me because I was on antidepressants. I have since learned that when you fill out the forms to list EVERY ailment due to the Hep-C. Weakness, vomiting, muscle soreness, fever, fatigue, depression etc. The more you say the quicker they will get their butts moving. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So SQUEAK! lol All you need to do to get this ball rolling is to call an atty. They will tell you everything from there. I agree with you about all these people getting medicare/medicaid, foodstamp and other services. How the he** do they do it? Then the folks who deserve it are turned down. The system sucks.(sorry) My very best to you and your husband. Janet DON " T GIVE UP
Guest guest
Irish, Oh I forgot to tell you that at the time that I filed AND received the ss disability I had NOT had a biopsy or treatment and still got it. I noticed on an earlier e-mail that this was a good thing to have, Be Prepared, and it is but it is not always the case. My biopsy and treatment came much later AFTER I was receiving checks. Guest guest
All of the atty's that I have talked to won't even take your case until you have been turned down at least once. That has been the case here. As far as working, I believe that you have to be disabled enough to receive the disability so that could be a bit tricky to continue to work. I'm not real clear on that though. Janet

Guest guest
Isn't it a shame that you would have to pay an atty to get the benefits that you're rightfully entitled to? My husband's objection to applying for SS himself wasn't because he felt like he was asking for a handout. In his mind, he felt like it was another step closer to never working again. That's what bothered him. Luckily I can keep us afloat. I have not seen " the list, " but I thought I heard that Hep C was not on it. Your doctor may have some insight since I believe they furnish a lot of the paperwork. If all fails, you could always take up the bottle to qualify! Keep trying, Irish. Guest guest
Tree, it was the Doctor who suggested we go this route.....he signed all the papers and even wrote a personal letter to state that My Husband was in an emergency medical need. So that didn't help us at all. The list is Blindness, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, Kidney Dialysis (spelt wrong),some heart problems and some cancer... Now the Welfare work release program, where they want you to go to work instead of sitting on your A** for no reason....Well, the recipients who are to lazy to work are now trying to collect SSI, and some are actually getting it...Go figure. On Monday I will start doing what I can to find out all I can. But for now I need a break from this, especially since the DR. S still don't know what is wrong with me and why I still have these chest pains...I really think it is all stress related, Irish
Guest guest
Irish: Sometimes " the system " just doesn't make sense. My husband is an alcoholic. He went into an in-patient treatment center a couple of years ago. Luckily our health insurance paid most of it. We saw a very sad case there where a young father of 3 also wanted desperately to quit. His insurance would only pay for a week, and it was too expensive for them to pay on their own. He and his wife both cried the day he left because they knew in-patient treatment was their only hope and one week wasn't enough. Yet the place was filled with people who had no insurance (or jobs) and had been ordered there by the court as part of their sentencing for some offense. Why couldn't the State also see that it made sense to pay to " heal " this young man who works and pays into the system. I'll get off my soapbox now. Irish, you're right. You need a break from this. Do something fun for yourself or you'll burn out. Go shopping--even if it's a dollar store. I'll be thinking about you. Tree
Guest guest
Tree, I guess I will never understand how our great government works. Criminals and dead beats seem to be more important than, useful working and honest people ...go figure. I took a long nap today and tomorrow if the weather is nice I am going to the Dollar store love that place lol. Take care, Irish
Guest guest
Welfare & food stamps are State agencies but SSI is Federal Gov. I went to Welfare and was told that a family of 5 had to make less than 450. per month to be eligible. I nearly flipped out?? How can you even pay rent and eat for that much. What I was told that many single women who had boyfriends could get it because the boyfriends income didn't count cause they weren't married. So, if I divorced my wife and just lived with her I would be eligible. What has our country come to when it sends out the signal to live with each other is OK and we will even give you money, foodstamps, etc. It goes against any moral upbringing I was taught. But look at who is running our country-Mr. Womenizer himself. I'll probably get some flack for expressing my opinions-but thats the way I feel and think, and this is still supposed to be a free country. When the Supreme court says that you have to allow homosexuals in the Boy Scouts as leaders I sometimes wonder where our " freedom " went wrong. I sure wouldn't want my boys molested in the scouting program. I may have " brain fog " , but I still know right from wrong. I guess I'm politically incorrect. Guest guest
I do agree with you about what you said on many levels but like everything else, there isn't much to be done about it unless you are a foreigner. Seems to me they have more VOICE than the AMERICANS. Whether it be Government or State. If you need help and have worked all your life and paid the taxes you should be allowed to receive the help you need when you ask for it and not have to >>>BEG, BORROW AND STEAL FOR IT... I have a problem going to these offices and getting looked at like I don't belong, meanwhile they have BEEPERS, CELL PHONES and are using them there and being called while waiting for their appt..... Hell if you can afford these things then you don't need all that help you are asking for... Meanwhile the kids of these parents are walking around in all the expensive clothes and sneakers!!! Something doesn't seem right to me ... as for Homosexuality well to each his Own but keep it away from me and mine...... Irish
