2007 Lesson

Beloved Students

May the dawning month of November, 2007, find each of you looking

forward to sustaining even deeper levels of cutting through all

illusions. While such is, of course, the noble choice for all who seek

their enlightenment, there is something to be said for keeping the

goal before you at all times. As we have noted so many times

previously, attending the “workshop of the mind” is, indeed, a full

time job. I hope each of you is truly “putting your best foot

forward,” as the saying goes, in your mindfulness work. Surely it is

the most important work you can do – for yourself, yes, but more

importantly, for all sentient beings.

In our focus this month, you will receive a lecture which I dubbed

Living a Healing Life. In truth, I find this title a bit awkward, and

might have better named it something like Living As If You Have Healed

All That You Came To Heal and Extending Healing To All Other Beings,

As Well. However, I think you can see the obvious problem with the

second option. Not only will it be difficult to fit on the CD, it

sounds pretty convoluted, as well. The idea, however, is about living

your life as if you are already whole, or complete.

Now that may sound like a large order for many of you. Since the

Western cultural norms tend to promote aggrandizement of all the parts

of life that appear to be “wrong,” and then apply blame to countless

other parties to justify the steeping of oneself in various forms of

pity and self-centeredness, the notion of living as if one is truly

whole may seem absurd. Of course, what is a spiritual path without a

little absurdity? This is particularly true when what others may view

as absurd can actually benefit them, and all other beings as well.

It is, of course, critically important to hold as a factual matter

that effecting one’s own healing is a great gift to the planet. Truly,

it is a wonderful gift to offer yourself, as well, but beyond warm

fuzzy of gifting oneself, the mature spiritual student understands the

outright necessity of healing the self as a devout act of service to

the planet. Indeed, from the point of Buddha maturity, one has no need

to delineate dualistically between self and the planet – or the

universe, for that matter. Rather, in viewing the physical experience

simply as a single (albeit colossal) healing project, one is struck by

the fact that one not only must heal oneself on behalf of the planet,

but that the self is the only agent over which one has any power to

effect change. Hence, living in a healed state, or a state of

wholeness is the precise means to establish wholeness on the planet.

Can you see that this is more than just another “good idea?” In fact,

this is likely an appropriate time to consider just how dissolving the

flagrant levels of corruption so easily discernible in the planetary

process, and healing the physical, emotional and mental bodies of

Earth actually merge together into a beautiful bouquet of

transformational service. For many of you, much of our Year of Service

merely seemed like another “good idea.” For others of you, it has

seemed like a viable vehicle for your personal growth. Of course, both

are true; but it is time to go deeper into the mystery that is

emerging with regard to the co-creative endeavor of securing Earth’s

future. Many of you still expect the spiritual plane to do this for

you. However, since the physical planet belongs to physical beings, it

is important that you see yourselves as responsible parties to the

matter at hand (i.e., the future of the planet).

It is important to look beyond the comfort zone of your own little

corner on the Earth – whether you see this as the space you occupy, or

the goods and resources you consume, or the personal areas wherein you

strive for clarity and compassion. Whatever you deem your experiential

locus in the planetary situation, it is now time to expand it. It is

no longer appropriate to see yourself as a lone individual flung into

a sea of circumstances over which you have neither control nor

creative input. Rather, it is time to put away the common tendency to

assert some form of mental manipulation of all those “good ideas,” and

actively engage in the co-creation of the solution that will indeed

secure Earth’s future.

One of the elements currently arising, with seemingly more and more

vengeance, is the continued perpetration of cruelty and torture. Now I

realize most of you do not want to be reminded of such things, but

clearly, this is an area that feeds on, and in turn nurtures,

corruption at all levels. But further, it pointedly demonstrates the

unhealed points in both individual and collective expressions of the

planetary psyche. Indeed, Earth will never experience wholeness or

unity so long as torture is tolerated by the many. Of course, it must

be said that those who tolerate torture of any kind do so because they

fear being tortured.

While it may be easy to single out repressive governments such as

China for torturous domination of Tibet, and strongly influencing the

current dynamics in Burma, the sad fact is that today, even the U.S.

falls into the category of repressive governments. (This assertion can

be substantiated by the fact most Americans are afraid to complain to

their leaders about numerous areas of corruption: the torture

perpetrated in their name upon “enemy combatants” in Guantanamo, Cuba,

or the corruption issues in the financial and health care industries

that are compromising the lives of millions in the U.S., or ongoing

invasion through government sanctioned wire tapping, to name only a few.)

While the areas above are indeed signs of repressive government, the

truth is that they are slight when compared to the treatment of human

beings in Tibet, Burma, and the Congo today. While these certainly are

not the only areas of grave concern, they will serve to illustrate a

profound lesson. Since most of you are spiritually mature enough to

move beyond some of the more commonly held premises (e.g., “Why does

God let this happen?”), I will not treat this level of consideration

here. However, it is time to recognize that your government counts on

the fact that its citizenry is just too busy dealing with their own

issues to take it to task for its grave lack of responsibility.

Further, your government knows you fear it, and herein lays a great

irony. Did you (the citizenry) not elect your leaders? (Now don’t

complain about corruption at the polling placers here. Demand higher

standards of your leaders – and of yourselves!)

When you read of monks in Burma or Tibet suffering horrible torture at

the hands of their oppressors, and in spite of it, still demanding

their freedom, does this not speak to your very core? When you read of

women being so horribly brutalized by rapists who literally disembowel

their victims in the Congo, do you not (at least at some level) feel

their pain and hear their voices crying out for justice? These

atrocities tear at the very core of the “We,” and signal alarming

times for the sentient beings of Earth. Who shall speak for these who

have no voice? Who shall dare to heal this profound split in the

magnificence of Being?

While some might argue that it is the karma of those so suffering to

bear their pain and “get their lessons,” may I remind you that such a

belief is grounded in duality, not in unity. In truth, if you know of

these events, then they are part of your own karmic package, as well.

In compassion, arise as the Buddhas you are becoming, and live a

healing life in all the perfect manifestations of Wholeness.

Know that I continually love and bless you, and I hold forth for your

complete healing, as well as that of Earth.

Your loving teacher,

Djwhal Khul
