Hitec Wires Home for " Extreme Makeover "

Hitec Group International, of Burr Ridge, IL, has been asked to be part of the

“Extreme Makeover:

Home Edition” (EMHE) team for an upcoming show that will air during 2004-2005

season.

The EMHE team will take seven days to transform the Detroit home of Larry and

Judy Vardon. The

Vardons are deaf; their son Lance, 12, is blind and autistic; and their

14-year-old son, Stephan,

communicates and interprets for the family and takes care of his parents and

brother. His parents'

natural language is American Sign Language (ASL); they do not communicate

verbally.

As Stephan prepares to enter high school and then move on to college, he has

concerns about his

parents and brother and their ability to communicate over the phone. EMHE’s

mission is to give the

family high-tech communication and safety solutions that are available to people

who live with

hearing loss.

" This project presents us with a great opportunity to use our knowledge and

expertise and to find

innovative ways in which to deal with this family's special needs in order to

make a difference in

their lives,” said Michele Ahlman, vice president of Hitec and president of

ClearSoundsTM, the

manufacturer of Hitec’s new line of ALD products. “We are proud to offer our

unique product

solutions, designed to make their everyday living much easier, safer and more

enjoyable, and to

allow them to be more connected to and involved with the outside world. "

Hitec’s technology team includes SBC Communications Inc., NXI and MCI, reported

Ahlman. She said the

plan is to create a system that allows the parents to communicate with each

other using sign

language, even if they are in different rooms.

“We will install a communications system with video capability, which will allow

the family to make

high-speed, real-time (TTY) phone calls using their natural ASL language,” she

explained. “In

addition, the universal design will allow their 14-year-old son to use the

computers to do homework

and surf the ‘Net. Our technology team will also install a variety of signaling

devices for the

convenience and safety of the family.”
