Guest guest
I did some quick research for you..... and now I am very curious ... why are you asking about platybasia? Firstly I am not a doctor etc, but this is my take on the subject. Platybasia refers to a flat or flatter base of the skull. Platybasia is an asymptomatic flattening of the skull base; ie, the angle formed by the intersection of the plane of the clivus and the plane of the anterior fossa is > 135° on lateral skull x-ray. Plagiocephaly strictly means 'crooked head' and refers to flattening of the back/back and side of the skull generally with corresponding bossing at the front, often giving a trapezoid shape to the skull (as looked down upon). Plagiocephaly refers to the shape of the skull and can be caused by deformation (in utero or by position), unilateral fusion of the lambdoid suture or unilateral fusion of the coronal suture. Plagiocephaly (as in positional plagiocephaly or deformational plagiocephaly) can be used to describe abnormal headshapes caused by deformation in utero or by positioning. Platybasia and plagiocephaly are really talking about two different issues, two different parts of the skull and from my quick research ---- different causes. Does this help? Guest guest
Instead of a nice, rounded base of the skull (behind the ears, right above the nape of the neck) it's flattened and broad. Sometimes its due to the spinal column actually pushing up into the skull, which could cause problems. Platybasia and plagiocephaly are 2 different terms used to describe 2 different skull deformities. Like brachycephaly and scaphocephaly. " PLATYBASIA (SYNONYMS-BASILAR IMPRESSION, BASILAR INVAGINATION) IS A DEFORMITY OF THE OCCIPITAL BONE AND THE UPPER CERVICAL VERTEBRAE. THE NATURE AND DEGREE OF THE DEFORMITY VARIES GREATLY BUT, ESSENTIALLY, THE FORAMEN MAGNUM IS DISPLACED UPWARD INTO THE CRANIAL CAVITY AND THE UPPER CERVICAL VERTEBRAE ARE DISLOCATED UPWARD AND FORWARD INTO THE CRANIAL DEPRESSION. IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES THE DEFORMITY IS DUE TO A CONGENITAL DEFECT IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE OCCIPITAL BONE, ATLAS AND AXIS, BUT IN A SMALLER NUMBER THE DEFORMITY IS ACQUIRED AS A RESULT OF SOME PATHOLOGIC PROCESS THAT OCCURS IN THE BONES OF THE REGION. " " a developmental deformity of the base of the skull in which the lower occiput is pushed by the upper cervical spine into the cranial fossa . " This is probably as clear as mud. Where did you get the term?
