Candy,

Cranialsacral massage has been mentioned here before, but to my knowledge we

do not have any members here currently using that form of treatment. In my

opinion if cranialsacral massage can truly correct the headshape issues that

would be awesome! As far as not recommending the band/helmet, I know that

some specialists do not like the idea of the dynamic bands as they do not

believe in applying direct pressure to a baby's skull. Of course there are so

many schools of thought on these issues and there doesn't seem to be any kind

of concensus. I am a believer in whatever works for your baby - do it!! The

ultimate goal is to correct the problem - how we get there will vary from

family to family and from situation to situation.

I really hope you will keep us posted on the cranialsacral massage. If that

can really correct headshape then it would be a great treatment option!!!

Hi Candy,

My son was diagnosed with tort at 2 months, which aggravated the plagio that I think started inutero, as he was a little squished. has been in pt since he was 3 months and my pt practices craniosacral therapy. It is more of a relaxation technique used to relax the body. When she does it, she holds certain pressure points and he will naturally release the tense muscles. At first I was skeptical, because it really looks like she isn't doing much, but after she taught me a few exercises, I can say that it does seem to relax him, and you can see him drop his shoulders (works best when he is sleeping!).

As for changing head shape, I have my doubts about that. had the same problems: one eye a little smaller, ears misaligned. Although I credit massage therapy around the facial features and trying to massage the muscle to "release" the ear from its tight grip- as well as the cheek, the eye lid, etc. (the muscle is so tight it is essentially pulling these features DOWN to meet it- so we massage upwards...keep also in mind that the lower torso, i.e., rib cage, is being pulled UP to meet the muscle also, so we massage light strokes down on the rib cage). We opted to get the DOC band, and he was in it a week shy of 5 months. The ears are almost aligned now!

The head shape was growing wrong and the tort aggravated the flatness. I have no regrets about putting him in the helmet as I think it did the "trick" with helping his ears get back into alignment. The ear used to look like it was sliding off his head, now after 2 months and 3 weeks, he is finished and the results are quite remarkable (the ear is still a little off, but I am told as the tort resolves the ear will release as well- the eyes look symmetrical now- no droopy eye lid). I am going to attach a link that explains the craniosacral therapy. I don't see how that could fix head shape without also aggressive repositioning, or the band (I would think my therapist would have said not to get the band, if she thought her craniosacral techniques would change his head shape, but she thought it was a great idea). Good luck and I hope this explains the therapy a bit. Let me know if I can answer any specific questions you may have!

Candy:

Check the BOOKMARKS section, as there are some links to cranialsacral therapy articles there.

I have spoken with a couple of Moms who used CST on their children. They were extremely happy with how the therapy helped with the tort, but were still concerned about head shape. Give it a try - every case is different, and if you're not happy, you can always change your mind!

Plagiocephaly

Subject: Cranialsacral Therapy

I have an eight month old who was born with torticollis and plagiocephaly. He has been working with a PT since he was five months and is being followed by Ben Carson at s Hopkins. His head is still flatter on one side and he still has a tilt although he does have full range of motion to left and right now.His eyes look a lot better (one was bigger for quite some time). My main concern is his head shape and the fact that his ears are still out of alignment. My PT just referred me to a cranialsacral therapist and we have had one session. I noticed definite improvement that first night in overall attitide, sleeping, etc. Has anyone had experience with this therapy. She said she could change his head shape back to normal. Have been told by both Dr. Carson and by the cranialsacral therapist that they do not recommend helmets. Any input would be appreciated. Candy Watkins, mom to For more plagio info
