sensitivity vs Whisper?

Think of sensitivity as a bunch of concentric circles. When you increase

the sensitivity then you hear more sounds in a wider range of circles.

Decreasing the sens will allow you to hear only the closer sounds - whatever

those

sounds may be. The Whisper setting brings up the softer sounds of speech in

whatever sens setting you are in. It allows the user to hear speech better but

works best in quiet. On the BWP, ADRO brings up the softer speech sounds as

well as dampen the lower pitched background noise so ADRO is best for hearing

speech in noise. I do wish ADRO could be put on the 3G!!

Don't worry if you get no benefit from the software additions yet. For

me it took some time to get used to all the CI input before I could figure out

what the extras sounded like.

I have a question. What are the different results from changing the

sensitivity dial as opposed to switching to Whisper? Have been on this list

and reading for quite awhile and learning a lot! I was implanted Oct 29 and

activated Dec 5 (Nucleus 3G). Have had two mappings and the 3rd will be

next week. I feel things are going well in most situations, but am still

lost in noise. I have the BTE and the dial is set for sensitivity now.

Changing that in noise does not seem to help much. Somewhere on the tape

they gave us is a scene of people sitting around a table and there is a line

about using the Whisper setting for that. Do you all use Whisper in noisy

restaurants? Is there some combination of Whisper and sensitivity that

helps?
