Guest guest
Hi , Nice to meet you. I have had my implant since September/October of 2000 and it was the best thing I ever did! It takes time to relearn how to hear with an implant but with time, practice and patience, I'm sure you'll feel similarly. Just remember not to compare yourself to others on your journey. We all move at our own pace and we never know just where on the continuum we will end up. I have a journal to share that tells about what I went through from surgery to hook-up. Just let me know if you want to read it and I will send it to you....and any lurkers out there!! Read everything and ask anything!
Guest guest
Hello to all of you here on this forum! I am at this time waiting for an assessmaent for a CI. Here in Canada (I am in BC)there are considerable waits; several months for an assessment and 1-2 years after that until surgery. Govt. funding limits the number of implants that can be done in a year and there is a big push going on to get adequate funding. Unfortunately, my province has the lowest rate of implants per million per year. I am post-linguistically severely impaired bilaterally and have been for 30+ years. I am hoping for a good result but it may be poorer due to the length of time I have been deaf. But I am NOT giving up; I will wait and in the meantime learn all I can about the CI. This forum will be very helpful and I thank those who tell their experiences to the rest of us waiting. Looking forward to " talking " with all of you. I did not wear hearing aids or have any auditory stimulation at all. I have had my CI for just over 18 months now and will tell you that at first it was a real whacky wild hookup ( I had ducks quacking for voices!) ....but over time things have improved beyond my wildest dreams. I am one of the lucky ones and score 100% in the booth in quiet and a bit less with the hearing in noise tests ( HINT). I also assumed since I had been deaf so long I might not do well with a CI. It DID take a whole lot of work and practice. Lots of rehab that you can actually do on the computer to help things along. Glad you are going for it...nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain! Deb H Clarion CII, HiRes, Auria trials
